Modification of wood with isopropyl glycidyl ether and its effects on decay resistance and light stability.

China fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata var. lanceolata) and maple (Acer sp.) wood were etherified with isopropyl glycidyl ether and the decay resistance and light stability of the modified wood were assessed. CP/MAS (13)C NMR and FT-IR analyses indicated that new ether bonds containing isopropyl groups formed after reacting wood with isopropyl glycidyl ether. Modified wood samples were very resistant to decay when exposed to brown-rot fungus Laetiporus sulphureus or white-rot fungus Lenzites betulina for 60 days in the soil-block test. The isopropyl glycidyl ether treatment of wood was effective in decreasing formation of phenoxyl radicals upon UV irradiation and thus protecting wood from photodiscoloration.

Application of solid-phase extraction to quantitatively determine cyproconazole and tebuconazole in treated wood using liquid chromatography with UV detection.

Solid-phase extraction (SPE) procedures were developed to avoid interference during the quantitative determination of cyproconazole and tebuconazole co-existing in wood extractives. Five species of wood were used, Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica), Japanese larch (Larix leptolepis), Yezo spruce (Picea jezoensis), Sakhalin fir (Abies sachalinensis), and western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla). Methanol extractives from the heartwood of all wood samples, except western hemlock, interfered with the quantitative determination of cyproconazole and tebuconazole using liquid chromatography (LC) with UV detection (LC-UV). SPE with Oasis MCX was effective in avoiding this interference. This method also reduced the time and volume of mobile phase required for LC-UV, since wood extractives with long retention times were also removed.

Quantitative determination of benzalkonium chloride in treated wood by solid-phase extraction followed by liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection.

Ammoniacal copper quat (ACQ) compound wood preservative is comprised of copper and quaternary ammonium compounds with benzalkonium chloride (BAC) as the active ingredient. Solid-phase extraction (SPE) followed by liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection (LC-UV) was developed for quantitative determination of BAC in treated wood. Five species of wood were used, Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica), Japanese larch (Larix leptolepis), Yezo spruce (Picea jezoensis), Sakhalin fir (Abies sachalinensis), and western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla). BAC used in the present study was composed of 66% C12, 33% C14 and less than 1% C16. BAC was added to each wood species (500 mg) then extracted with HCl-ethanol (20 ml) and quantitatively determined with LC-UV (262 nm). Wood extractives from the heartwood of each species, except western hemlock, interfered with quantitative determination of BAC, but SPE with an Oasis MCX cartridge was effective in preventing this. Using the present methods, BAC homologue peaks were clearly confirmed without interference. Recoveries from wood ranged from 92 to 101% and the limit of quantitation was approximately 240 microg/g wood for the C12 and C14 homologues.

Filter design for cancellation of baseline-fluctuation in needle EMG recordings.

Appropriate cancellation of the baseline fluctuation (BLF) is an important issue when recording EMG signals as it may degrade signal quality and distort qualitative and quantitative analysis. We present a novel filter-design approach for automatic cancellation of the BLF based on several signal processing techniques used sequentially. The methodology is to estimate the spectral content of the BLF, and then to use this estimation to design a high-pass FIR filter that cancel the BLF present in the signal. Two merit figures are devised for measuring the degree of BLF present in an EMG record. These figures are used to compare our method with the conventional approach, which naively considers the baseline course to be of constant (without any fluctuation) potential shift. Applications of the technique on real and simulated EMG signals show the superior performance of our approach in terms of both visual inspection and the merit figures.

Baseline wander correction in pulse waveforms using wavelet-based cascaded adaptive filter.

Pulse diagnosis is a convenient, inexpensive, painless, and non-invasive diagnosis method. Quantifying pulse diagnosis is to acquire and record pulse waveforms by a set of sensor firstly, and then analyze these pulse waveforms. However, respiration and artifact motion during pulse waveform acquisition can introduce baseline wander. It is necessary, therefore, to remove the pulse waveform's baseline wander in order to perform accurate pulse waveform analysis. This paper presents a wavelet-based cascaded adaptive filter (CAF) to remove the baseline wander of pulse waveform. To evaluate the level of baseline wander, we introduce a criterion: energy ratio (ER) of pulse waveform to its baseline wander. If the ER is more than a given threshold, the baseline wander can be removed only by cubic spline estimation; otherwise it must be filtered by, in sequence, discrete Meyer wavelet filter and the cubic spline estimation. Compared with traditional methods such as cubic spline estimation, morphology filter and Linear-phase finite impulse response (FIR) least-squares-error digital filter, the experimental results on 50 simulated and 500 real pulse signals demonstrate the power of CAF filter both in removing baseline wander and in preserving the diagnostic information of pulse waveforms. This CAF filter also can be used to remove the baseline wander of other physiological signals, such as ECG and so on.

[Palaeostructures of vegetation at the upper limit of forests in the inner French Alps].

The comparison of six pollen diagrams from French Alps allows us to reconstruct the past changes of vegetation structure at the upper limit of Subalpine range. Dense populations of Pinus cembra developed between 6500 and 2400 cal. BP, both in the southern Alps and the northern ones. Southern Alps seem however to be characterised by higher altitudinal limits, as shown by the past development of fir forests at 2080 m a.s.l. in the Ubaye valley. This study highlights the importance of taking in account local parameters in regional or continental reviews.

Forest health status in the Carpathian Mountains over the period 1997-2001.

The results of forest health status assessments in the Carpathian Mountains from the monitoring networks developed by the European Union Scheme on the Protection of Forest Against Atmospheric Pollution (EU Scheme) and International Co-operative Programme on Assessment and Monitoring of Air Pollution Effects on Forests (ICP-Forests), have led to a better understanding of the impact of air pollution and other stressors on forests at the regional scale. During the period 1997-2001, forests in the Carpathian Mountains were severely affected by air pollution and natural stresses with 29.7-34.9% of the trees included in defoliation classes 2-4. The broadleaves were slightly healthier than the conifers, and European beech (Fagus sylvatica) was the least affected species. Norway spruce (Picea abies) has poor health status, with 42.9-46.6% of the trees damaged (2-4% defoliation classes). Silver fir (Abies alba) damage was also high, with 46.0-50.9% in defoliation classes 2-4. Pines (primarily Pinus sylvestris) were the least affected of the conifers, with 24.9-33.8% in defoliation classes 2-4. The results from the transnational networks (16 x 16 km) show that the Carpathian forests are slightly more damaged than the average for the entire Europe. The correlative studies performed in individual European countries show the relationships between air pollution stressors with trends in defoliation and a possible effect of natural stresses at each site. More specific, effects of tree age, drought, ozone and acid deposition critical level exceedances were demonstrated to affect crown condition.

Comparisons of porous and adsorption properties of carbons activated by steam and KOH.

In this work, fir woods and pistachio shells were used as source materials to prepare porous carbons, which were activated by physical (steam) and chemical (KOH) methods. Pore properties of these activated carbons including the BET surface area, pore volume, pore size distribution, and pore diameter were first characterized by a t-plot method based on N(2) adsorption isotherms. Highly porous activated carbons with BET surface area up to 1009-1096 m(2)/g were obtained. The steam and KOH activation methods produced carbons with mesopore content in the range 9-15 and 33-49%, respectively. The adsorption equilibria and kinetics of tannic acid, methylene blue, 4-chlorophenol, and phenol from water on such carbons at 30 degrees C were then investigated to check their chemical characteristics. The Freundlich equation gave a better fit to all adsorption isotherms than the Langmuir equation. On the other hand, the intraparticle diffusion model could best follow all adsorption processes. In comparison with KOH-activated carbons, it was shown that the rate of external surface adsorption with steam-activated carbons was significantly higher but the rate of intraparticle diffusion was much lower.

Elimination of electrocardiogram contamination from electromyogram signals: An evaluation of currently used removal techniques.

Trunk electromyographic signals (EMG) are often contaminated with heart muscle electrical activity (ECG) due to the proximity of the collection sites to the heart and the volume conduction characteristics of the ECG through the torso. Few studies have quantified ECG removal techniques relative to an uncontaminated EMG signal (gold standard or criterion measure), or made direct comparisons between different methods for a given set of data. Understanding the impacts of both untreated contaminated EMG and ECG elimination techniques on the amplitude and frequency parameters is vital given the widespread use of EMG. The purpose of this study was to evaluate four groups of current and commonly used techniques for the removal of ECG contamination from EMG signals. ECG recordings at two intensity levels (rest and 50% maximum predicted heart rate) were superimposed on 11 uncontaminated biceps brachii EMG signals (rest, 7 isometric and 3 isoinertial levels). The 23 removal methods used were high pass digital filtering (finite impulse response (FIR) using a Hamming window, and fourth-order Butterworth (BW) filter) at five cutoff frequencies (20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 Hz), template techniques (template subtraction and an amplitude gating template), combinations of the subtraction template and high pass digital filtering, and a frequency subtraction/signal reconstruction method. For muscle activation levels between 10% and 25% of maximum voluntary contraction, the template subtraction and BW filter with a 30 Hz cutoff were the two best methods for maximal ECG removal with minimal EMG distortion. The BW filter with a 30 Hz cutoff provided the optimal balance between ease of implementation, time investment, and performance across all contractions and heart rate levels for the EMG levels evaluated in this study.

Combining remote sensing imagery and forest age inventory for biomass mapping.

Aboveground biomass (AGB) of forests is an important component of the global carbon cycle. In this study, Landsat ETM(+) images and field forest inventory data were used to estimate AGB of forests in Liping County, Guizhou Province, China. Three different vegetation indices, including simple ratio (SR), reduced simple ratio (RSR), and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), were calculated from atmospherically corrected ETM(+) reflectance images. A leaf area index (LAI) map was produced from the RSR map using a regression model based on measured LAI and RSR. The LAI map was then used to develop an initial AGB map, from which forest stand age was deduced. Vegetation indices, LAI, and forest stand age were together used to develop AGB estimation models for different forest types through a stepwise regression analysis. Significant predictors of AGB changed with forest types. LAI and NDVI were significant predictors of AGB for Chinese fir (R(2)=0.93). The model using LAI and stand age as predictors explained 94% of the AGB variance for coniferous forests. Stand age captured 79% of the AGB variance for broadleaved forests (R(2)=0.792). AGB of mixed forests was predicted well by LAI and SR (R(2)=0.931). Without differentiating among forest types, the model with SR and LAI as predictors was able to explain 90% of AGB variances of all forests. In Liping County, AGB shows a strong gradient that increases from northeast to southwest. About 64% of the forests have AGB in the range from 90 to 180 t ha(-1).

Synthesis, physicochemical and pharmacokinetic characterization of calcium uronates.

Four calcium compounds containing uronic acids (D(+)-galacturonic and D(+)-glucuronic) in L:M ratio = 2 and 3 were isolated by applying novel (except for one complex) synthetic procedures. The compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, spectroscopic methods (diffuse reflectance and absorption UV-visible, IR, FIR), mass spectrometry, fast atom bombardment (FAB), thermal decomposition, thermogravimetry/derivative thermogravimetry (TG/DTG) data and differential scanning calorimetric studies (DSC). Two modes of water binding in the complexes, i.e., hydration and coordination-like, were established. Computer-aided analysis has shown that further investigations are needed in order to determine the applicability of calcium uronates as calcium carriers.

Methyl-substituted 4-nitropyridine N-oxides as ligands: structural, spectroscopic, magnetic and cytotoxic characteristics of copper(II) complexes.

Seven new mono- and dinuclear Cu(II) complexes containing various methyl substituted 4-nitropyridine N-oxides as ligands were isolated and characterized physicochemically and biologically. The characterization included elemental analysis, magnetic and spectroscopic methods (diffuse reflectance and UV-visible absorption, IR, FIR). A single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis was performed for the complex with 2,5-dimethyl-4-nitropyridine N-oxide. Trans- and cis-square planar configuration around Cu ion was established for mono- and dinuclear species, respectively. In methanolic solutions the dinuclear species decompose into mononuclear ones with increasing 4-->6 coordination number with attachment of two solvent molecules. The IR spectra showed that the strength of the Cu-ligand bond gauged by the degree of N-O elongation changed irregularly with position and number of methyl groups. Cytotoxic studies on the MCF-7 human breast cancer line revealed a structure-activity relationship: double blocking of the NO(2) group with two CH(3) groups rendered the complex completely inactive.

European Leucoma salicis NPV is closely related to North American Orgyia pseudotsugata MNPV.

The satin moth Leucoma salicis L. (Lepidoptera, Lymantriidae) is a frequent defoliator of poplar trees (Populus spp.) in Europe and Asia (China, Japan). Around 1920 the insect was introduced into the USA and Canada. In this paper, a multicapsid nucleopolyhedrovirus isolated from L. salicis larvae in Poland (LesaNPV) was characterized and appeared to be a variant of Orgyia pseudotsugata (Op) MNPV. O. pseudotsugata, the Douglas fir tussock moth (Lepidoptera, Lymantriidae), occurs exclusively in North America. Sequences of three conserved baculovirus genes, polyhedrin, lef-8, and pif-2, were amplified in polymerase chain reactions using degenerate primer sets, and revealed a high degree of homology to OpMNPV. Restriction enzyme analysis confirmed the close relationship between LesaNPV and OpMNPV, although a number of restriction fragment length polymorphisms were observed. The lef-7 gene, encoding late expression factor 7, and the ctl-2 gene, encoding a conotoxin-like protein, were chosen as putative molecular determinants of the respective viruses. The ctl-2 region appeared suitable for unequivocal identification of either virus as LesaNPV lacked a dUTPase gene in this region. Our observations may suggest that LesaNPV, along with L. salicis, was introduced into O. pseudotsugata after introduction of the former insect into North America in the 1920s.

Equi-ripple design of quadratic-phase RF pulses.

An improved strategy for the design of quadratic-phase RF pulses with high selectivity and broad bandwidths using the Shinnar-Le Roux (SLR) transformation is proposed. Unlike previous implementations, the required quadratic-phase finite impulse response (FIR) filters are generated using the complex Remez exchange algorithm, which ensures an equi-ripple deviation from the ideal response function. It is argued analytically that quadratic-phase pulses are near-optimal in terms of minimising the B1-amplitude for a given bandwidth and flip angle. Furthermore, several parameter relations are derived, providing practical design guidelines. The effectiveness of the proposed design method is demonstrated by examples of excitation and saturation pulses applied in vitro and in vivo.

Parametric methods for frequency-selective MR spectroscopy-a review.

Accurate quantitation of the spectral components in a pre-selected frequency band for magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) signals is a frequently addressed problem in the MR community. One obvious application for such a frequency-selective technique is to lower the computational burden in situations when the measured data sequence contains too many samples to be processed using a standard full-spectrum method. Among the frequency-selective methods previously proposed in the literature, only a few possess the two features of primary concern: high robustness against interferences from out-of-band components and low computational complexity. In this survey paper we consider five spectral analysis methods which can be used for MRS signal parameter estimation in a selected frequency band. We re-derive the filter diagonalization method (FDM) in a new way that allows an easy comparison to the other methods presented. Then we introduce a frequency-selective version of the method of direction estimation (MODE) which has not been applied to MR-spectroscopy before. In addition, we present a filtering and decimation technique using a maximum phase bandpass FIR-filter and relate it to a similar ARMA-modeling approach known as SB-HOYWSVD (sub-band high-order Yule-Walker singular value decomposition). Finally, we study the numerical performances of these four methods and compare them to that of the recently introduced SELF-SVD (Singular Value Decomposition-based method usable in a SELected Frequency band) in several examples using simulated MR data, and discuss the benefits and disadvantages of each technique.

Direction of regeneration waves in grid-based models for forest dynamics.

Progressing waves of regeneration are observed in forest ecosystems such as Shimagare fir forests. The patterns generated by lattice models for forest dynamics often show similar waves of disturbance and recovery. This paper introduces a method to detect and quantify the directional movement of these waves. The method is based only on the disturbance times of the sites and allows to distinguish three types of wave patterns: patterns with global direction, patterns with local direction, and patterns without direction. We apply this to several grid-based models for forest dynamics which are evaluated analytically or by simulation. The results reveal a clear distinction of the models which earlier studies were not able to detect.

Gaussian mixture models of ECoG signal features for improved detection of epileptic seizures.

PURPOSE: To investigate the potential for improving the performance of the Osorio-Frei seizure detection algorithm (OFA) by incorporating multiple FIR filters operating in parallel and Gaussian mixture models (GMM) for ECoG features distributions, thus creating "hybrid" system. METHODS: The "hybrid" algorithm decomposes the signal into four subbands, using wavelets, after which relevant features are extracted for each subband. Following these steps, multivariate GMM are developed for seizure and non-seizure states, using training segments. State classification is based on thresholding of the likelihood ratio of seizure vs. non-seizure data. Multiple comparisons are performed between this "hybrid" and a modified version of the OFA suitable for this purpose, using as indices false positives (FP), false negatives (FN) and speed of detection. RESULTS: GMM improved speed of detection over the modified OFA at negligible FP levels. The average detection delay from expert visually placed electrographic onset over all seizures was reduced from 4.8 s for modified OFA to 1.8 s for GMM (p < 0.002) Individualized training by subject proved superior to group-based training. CONCLUSIONS: This work introduces multi-feature extraction from ECoG signals together with use of Gaussian mixtures to model them, as tools to improve automated seizure detection. At the clinical level, this approach appears to increase warning time and with it the window during which safety measures and seizure blockage may be implemented, at an affordable computational cost and with negligible FP rate.

Exposure to hexanal odor influences maternal behavior and induces neonatal death in Fyn tyrosine kinase-deficient mice.

Fyn-deficient pups born of Fyn-deficient parents die because they fail to suckle within 1-2 days after birth. Here we demonstrate that the neonatal death phenotype was influenced by the genetic background and an environmental odor. The odor of hexanal (C6-aldehyde) partially impaired mouse maternal behavior and induced the neonatal death of Fyn-deficient pups born of Fyn-deficient parents. This death phenotype was first observed in the breeding environment using autoclaved chips of Douglas fir. An analysis of the volatile chemicals in the autoclaved chips revealed an approximately 10-fold greater amount of hexanal than in non-autoclaved chips. Hexanal influenced the length of time virgin female mice engage in the maternal crouching behavior. In addition, Fyn-deficient females exhibited defects in the maternal behavior of nest building and pup retrieval, regardless of exposure to hexanal. These observations provide new insights into the regulation of maternal behavior by environmental and genetic factors.
