[Prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections in nursery schools from Ciego de Avila Province, Cuba. 1989-1993].

The prevalence of intestinal parasitsm in nursery schools from Ciego de Avila province was annually avaluated during 1989-1993. The percentage of infected children ranged from 16.6% to 31.6%. An increase of frequence of infection was observed from 1991. Protozoa were more predominant than helminths. In the whole five-year period studied Giardia intestinalis had a higher prevalence (19.6%) followed by Entamoeba histolytica (3.0%). The nematode most frequently found was Trichuris trichiura (0.5%).

[Meningoencephalitis caused by Herpesviridae family virus in Cuba. 1996-1998].

Herpesvirus isolation from cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) has proven not to be very useful because of its low sensitivity; that is the reason why PCR has considerably improved the diagnosis of several viral infections of the central nervous system. We studied, by means of PCR, 253 CSF received in our laboratory from 1996 to 1998, which had a suspected diagnosis of herpesviral-associated neurologic disease (encephalitits or meningoencephalitis). Of these, 182 were from HIV seropositive patients and the other 71 were from HIV seronegative. The percentage of all positive cases was 22.5% in AIDS patients and CMV was the virus most frequently detected (13.7%). We detected a percentage of 29.5 of positive cases in immunocompetent individuals, being HSV the virus most frequently found. Other herpesviruses (varicella-zoster virus, Epstein-Barr virus, human herpesvirus 6) were also detected in some cases in both groups. Finally, we obtained clinical data from all positive patients and established a relationship with PCR results.

[Hematophagic activity of and environmental effect on the main malaria vector in Cuba: Anopheles albimanus].

An ecological study of Anopheles (N) albimanus in a suburban population of Camagüey province was carried out using a human bait in two trap points (indoor and outdoor). A higher quantity of females in the rainy season was observed together with a marked exophagic trend with peak activity in the early hours of the evening outdoor and in the early hours of the morning indoor. The abiotic influence on the fluctuation of the anophele population in both trap station was proved.

[Ecologic indexes in the surveillance system of Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) in Cuba].

The ecological indexes called diversity (H') and equitability (J') of the mosquito species were determined in six of the most common reservoirs of the urban ecosystem in the Plaza de la Revolución municipality, City of Havana. Data analysis showed that according to the values of these indexes, the most dangerous reservoirs were tyres, larvitraps and artificial reservoirs in general. Reference is also made on the use of larvitraps in the surveillance system of Aedes aegypti and the detection and stabilization of mosquitoes such as Aedes mediovittatus and Culex migripalpus in the urban ecosystem. The variety of species ranged from 2 to 7 in the studied reservoirs which showed differences in the patterns of use of the resources in the urban ecosystem.

[Mycobacteriosis caused by Mycobacterium gordonae. First case reported in Cuba].

Since 1990, repeated samples of a positive HIV patient were studied, who had skin lesions with ulcers and scabs, dirty bottom and prominent edges; hyperergic Mantoux and very low CD levels. As a result, a slowly growing pigmented strain was isolated and classified as Mycobacterium gordonae by using standard as well as alternative bacteriological studies such as the mycobacterial mycolic acid analysis. The patient was treated with 4 antibacilar drugs and 6 weeks after the starting of the treatment, all reported skin lesions had disappeared.

[Infection/immunity by hepatitis B virus in an adult population of Havana City. Cuba 1995].

The results of a study of markers of infection/immunity by hepatitis B virus in a community of the health area in "Cristobal Labra" polyclinics, City of Habana in 1995. The studied healthy adult population was not included in any vaccination strategy with hepatitis B vaccine. Two markers were studied: Hepatitis B surface antigen and its corresponding antibody (anti-HBs). HBsAg-positivity was 1.05% and anti-HBs positivity was 13.39%. Of anti-HBs-positive cases, 13.39% had titers from 10-50 UI/L and the rest (43.68%) had titers over 50 UI/L.

[Patterns of immunoglobulin synthesis in pediatric patients with Coxsackie A9 meningoencephalitis during the neuropathy epidemic in Cuba].

INTRODUCTION: Simultaneously with the origin and development of the Cuban epidemic neuropathy, cases of viral meningoencephalitis with particular characteristics due to Coxsackie were found. This virus and Inoue-Melnick virus were found too in patients suffering from Cuban epidemic neuropathy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 31 pediatric patients suffering from viral meningoencephalitis were studied. Albumin, IgA, IgM and IgG were quantified in serum and cerebrospinal fluid by nephelometry. Cytochemical studies and reibergrams were performed. RESULTS: There was a lymphocyte predominance in cerebrospinal fluid. A dysfunction of blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier was shown in 10 patients. Twenty patients have no immunoglobulins intrathecal synthesis. The synthesis patterns were: five patients with local IgM synthesis, two patients with local IgG synthesis and IgA + IgM. IgA + IgG and IgA + IgM pattern was synthesized in one patient respectively. Two patients with low IgG synthesis percentage or IgG intrathecal fractions were reported. CONCLUSIONS: The absence of immunoglobulins intrathecal synthesis and the immunoglobulins synthesis patterns differ from other pediatric patients with enterovirus meningoencephalitis. These patterns may have relationship with modified antigenic characteristics of the virus, also found in Cuban epidemic neuropathy.

[Entomological surveillance over Aedes (S) aegypti and other culicids in Ciudad de La Habana, Cuba 1991-1996].

The results of the entomologic surveillance carried out from 1991 to 1996 in Boyeros municipality, City of Havana within the Program for Eradication of Aedes aegypti were analyzed. Data on mosquitoes fauna collected in the municipality by various sampling methods, larval survey, human bait, capture at rest and larval traps. Culex quinquefasciatus, Aedes mediovittatus and Aedes aegypti species were the most found by the different methods. It was proved that water tanks, man-made deposits, other kinds of tanks and low tanks were the most exploited resources by mosquitoes for their breeding in this municipality whereas larval surveys were the most sensitive method for detecting species since it contributed a greater variety of species. Reference is made to the search for a mechanism that help estimate adult populations from larval indices provided by surveys and the method of capture at rest is stressed as the most sensitive method for adult mosquitoes, particularly for dengue vector within the surveillance system aimed at this species.

[Impact of an anti-hepatitis B virus (HBV) immunization program in patients undergoing dialysis in Havana, Cuba].

The follow-up of HBV markers in selected high infection risk populations, in patients from the hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis services was used to assess the effectiveness of a special vaccination program. Viral infection markers were studied in prevalence cross sections of the whole population of patients, and also by recording the reports of clinical cases of hepatitis B occurred during that period in those groups of patients. The prevention program consisted of the vaccination of all patients negative to the viral markers and the indication of vaccination for the new cases during the period of the kidney disease, just before the start of the treatment at the hemodialysis unit; besides all the persons susceptible to infection that had already been included in the program, regardless of the stage of the disease. The results show the benefit of the vaccination in these patients, but it is more effective in the period before the treatment with dialysis where there is a lower possibility of being exposed to the virus and the immune system is still competent. Once the program was established, after a follow up o 6 years, there have been no reports of new cases of hepatitis B and the incidence of the disease has been declining.
