[The prognostic factors in patients with malignant granulosa-theca cell tumors of the ovaries].

The extent of tumor, as revealed by surgery in 113 primary patients with malignant granulosa-stromal cell tumors of the ovaries (granulosa cell--77, theca cell--17 and mixed theca-granulosa cell tumors--19 patients), was analysed versus duration of disease, laterality of tumor and patient age. Factors which were significantly or as a marked tendency associated with stage III and IV of disease and thus suggested poor prognosis were identified.

[Blood-type and rhesus distribution in Armenian women with endometrial carcinoma].

ABO blood-type and rhesus distribution were studied in 548 Armenian women with endometrial carcinoma according to Rh-Hr system. The control group included 33,413 plus 440 healthy Armenian women with similar blood characteristics. The ratio of individuals with AB (IV) Rh (-) blood was found to be significantly higher (p < 0.05) as compared to controls. It is suggested that these findings should be taken into account when forming high-risk groups of Armenian patients with endometrial carcinoma.

[Immunogenetic blood markers as a risk factor of development of periodic disease in Armenian population].

AIM: To reveal characteristic associations between various markers of immunogenetic (HLA--A, B, C, DR), erythrocytic (ABO, Rh-Hr, MNSs, Pp, Kell-Chellano, Lewis), serum (Gm, Inv) systems and familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) in Armenian population. MATERIAL AND METHODS: From 41 to 125 patients (depending on systems studied) were examined. HLA-antigens of A-, B-, C-classes were detected by the microcytotoxic test in a total population of lymphocytes, HLA-DR antigens--by a prolonged test in B-lymphocytes, erythrocytic antigens--by hemagglutination technique and indirect Coombs' reaction, serum antigens--by the method of hemagglutination suppression. RESULTS: Confidential positive associative relations between antigens HLA-A1 and A9 (RR = 2.2 and 2.4), HLA B5 and B35 (RR = 3.03 and 3.2), HLA-Cw4 (RR = 4.3), HLA-DR3 (RR = 2.6), phenotypes AB (RR = 2.86) and MN (RR = 2.2), serum antigen Gmx+ (RR = 2.87) were demonstrated. Simultaneous expression of phenotype MN and antigen Gmx+ is a marker of high predisposition to the disease (RR = 4.7). Negative associative relations were found between FMF and antigens HLA-B12 and B18 (RR = 0.6 and 0.1), HLA DR4 (RR = 0.1) and phenotype MM (RR = 0.37). CONCLUSION: A simultaneous complex investigation of the markers of various immunogenetic systems allows detection of genetic markers of predisposition to FMF (HLA-B5, B35, Cw4, DR3, AB, Gmx+, MN) and the resistance to this disease (HLA-B12, B18, DR4) in a population of Armenians.

Kawasaki's disease with paralytic ileus. A case report.

The authors report on an 18 month-old boy affected by Kawasaki's disease (KD). The diagnosis of KD was made after exclusion of conditions with similar presentation. Two days after admission the child presented vomiting, abdominal distension, meteorism and increase of scrotal swelling with edema. An abdominal X-ray showed the presence of multiple water and gas levels in the ileum and subsequent diagnosis of paralitic ileus was made. After several evacuative enema the intestinal symptomatology resolved. The patient was treated twice (2 g/kg day and after 3 days again 2 g/kg day) with intravenous immunoglobulin following which he made an uneventful recovery. The authors conclude that the presence of paralytic ileus in a febrile child may represent an unusual clinical sign of KD and justify a timely commencement of intravenous immuno-globulin therapy.

[The cytologic diagnosis of synovial sarcomas].

Specific features of the cytologic picture were studied and the criteria of the cytologic verification of the tumor type and genetic appurtenance defined in cytologic studies of puncture biopsy specimens, removed tumor impressions, scrapings off, and histologic sections in the patients with malignant tumors of the synovial tissue. Analysis of the results of histologic studies has demonstrated the potentialities of the puncture cytologic method in the combined preoperative diagnosis of synovial sarcomas.

[Clinical-laboratory parallels in crush syndrome].

Biochemical evaluation of 60 patients with crush syndrome developing after the Armenian earthquake demonstrated informative value of some parameters: total blood protein, aspartate and alanine aminotransferase, myoglobin and middle-mass molecules. An aggravation of the disease accompanied acute renal failure and concomitant injuries. The above parameters proved valuable criteria in diagnosis of the clinical alterations.

[The role of cytological study during endoscopy in forming groups at high cancer risk].

Cytologic screening was carried out in 4509 outpatients examined using basic endoscopic procedures such as esophagoscopy, gastroscopy, rectocolonoscopy, laryngoscopy, bronchoscopy, hysteroscopy and cystoscopy. Patients showing moderate or severe dysplasia of the epithelium were included into the high cancer risk group which made up 16.9% of the screenees.

[Clinical validation of a method for biological demonstration of low radiation levels by the densitometric-geometric parameters of peripheral blood lymphocytes].

Karyometric analysis of blood lymphocytes of persons, exposed to low levels of radiation (up to 25 rem) during elimination of the consequences of the Chernobyl accident, has shown changes of lymphocyte densitometric-geometric parameters, characteristic for radiation exposure, observed in 188 of 294 examinees. The meaning of these statistically significant changes is the following: percentage of the level of large lymphocytes is on the decrease whereas that of average and small ones is on the decrease. There is also a parallel rise of values of the area and perimeter of a lymphocyte nuclear section. The above shifts were observed against a background of normal indices of the absolute number and a relative content of blood lymphocytes. Karyometric analysis of lymphocytes indicated signs of radiation exposure 1-33 mos. after irradiation at small doses. Cytogenetic verification of diagnosis has shown sensitivity of the karyometric method of biological demonstration [correction of bioindication], which can be recommended as an additional diagnostic test in chronic exposure to low levels of radiation for retrospective assessment.

[The hepatocyte ultrastructure of the Sevan trout (Salmo ischchan gegarkuni Kessel) in ontogeny].

Hepatocytes of Lake Sevan Salmo were examined at several stages in their life cycles which are different from the point of view of the manner of feeding. Salmo were reared at the fish farm, they were fed with the yolk of the chick eggs. It was revealed that hepatocytes of larva, which was sampled immediately after hatching (endogenous feeding) intensively synthesized the proteins; accumulated and secreted the bile product stored glycogen and lipids. The ultrastructure of larva hepatocytes changed on the 5th and 10th day after larva began to accept food (mixed feeding--endogenous and exogenous). Golgi complex became bigger, glycogen disappeared, lipid droplets became smaller (on the 5th day) and disappeared completely (on the 10th day). Morphological differentiation finishes during the fingerling period (exogenous feeding). Cisternae of granular endoplasmic reticulum (GER) and mitochondria are arranged around nucleus, near bile canaliculus and sinusoids. Big areas of glycogen lie between the organelles. Relative volumes of GER, mitochondria, glycogen increased, but the relative volume of Golgi complex diminished.

[The enzymatic chemical mechanisms of adaptation].

In sheep from biogeochemical provinces enriched by molybdenum and copper and in a model form of molybdenum toxicosis in animals, the important role of enzymic and neurohumoral systems in the development of adaptation to excessive uptake of molybdenum and copper has been demonstrated. Adaptive reorganization of the activity of enzymic systems (xanthine oxidase, ceruloplasmin, succinate dehydrogenase, aspartate and alanine aminotransferases) and gradual involvement of neurohumoral mechanisms of the sympathoadrenal and cholinoreactive systems provide for adaptation of some animals in molybdenum and copper-molybdenum biogeochemical provinces. In other sheep, under the same conditions, dystonic disturbances in the vegetative nervous systems are observed together with the development of molybdenum toxicosis.

[The status of immunity in the victims of industrial catastrophes and natural disasters].

The influence of industrial catastrophes or calamities upon human organism is accompanied by the affection of the immunity system. The structure and manifestations of immunity disorders depend on nature of the disturbing factors in every concrete catastrophe. The affections of the immunity system may lead to the formation of secondary immunodeficiency which will require additional medical assistance.
