In the treatment of chronic low back pain the efficacy and specificity of rehabilitation has been scientifically demonstrated, as testified by the actual International Clinical Guidelines. The usable techniques include Back School and functional rehabilitation: the first one relate patients with low functional impairments, and usually no working disability, while the second one should be used when there is a disability in the activity of daily living and in the profession. Even if originally developed as an inpatient treatment, in these years some randomised controlled trials have shown the efficacy also of outpatient techniques for functional rehabilitation, as the DBC proposal.
In line with the tradition of the Dutch school of functional morphology, an attempt is made to integrate numerical models of sarcomeres, muscle fibres, muscles, bone-connective-tissue systems, joints, muscle spindles and neural networks into one model simulating motor control. There are two purposes for this attempt. Firstly, to indicate whether numerical properties of the organs forming a system of motor control can be explained in terms of its motor functions. Secondly, to indicate properties that emerge from the integration of the organs into a system of motor control: how much more is an integrated motor system than the sum of its functional components. The motor control system of chewing has been taken as an example, particularly that in rats.
The autoimmune diseases, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus, are two of the more common acquired chronic diseases of childhood. In this article we will describe features of the diagnosis and treatment of these disorders. Particular emphasis is placed on the complications and how to anticipate them. The management of these diseases must include an appreciation of how chronic illness can affect family function and school relationships. With early attention to these nonmedicinal details, the majority of children can progress through childhood and adolescence with few physical or emotional handicaps.
Two siblings, a 14.5-year-old boy and his 11.5-year-old sister, with congenital nemaline myopathy presented with severe respiratory failure and, in the case of the older patient, with cor pulmonale and systemic hypertension. The children were treated initially by continuous mechanical ventilation, but after a few weeks they only required ventilation at night. At the start of treatment, both were found to have a decreased ventilatory response to CO2 which apparently improved during 4 to 5 years of follow-up treatment. It has not been possible to wean them from nocturnal mechanical ventilation, but during the daytime they attend school and function almost normally. It is postulated that respiratory failure in nemaline myopathy may not be related to the severity of the muscle weakness but may result from a disturbance of the feedback required for normal control of breathing.

Based on sequences of psychological examinations and the analysis of mental functioning of school children with learning difficulties, the authors propose a discussion around the concept of contradiction, such as envisaged by Piaget as having a fundamental role in the process of access to knowledge. The manner in which the dysfunction is manifested leads them to define different forms of reactions to the contradiction which compromises more or less seriously the development of knowledge. Finally, faced by the quasi existential confrontation which the contradiction represents for these children, they weigh the extent of its consequences on thought mechanisms.
Thirty twins aged 5 to 7 years old were assessed by a child psychiatrist in their home environment, and their parents were also interviewed. Umbilical artery pH, an obstetrical index and social class all failed as predictors of the dysfunctions found in these children. On the other hand, correlations were found between disturbances in family relationships and certain presumably "environment-free" variables. It is recommended that in child psychiatric counselling and treatment of "at risk" children more importance be attached to family development.

A complex of physical training measures for preschool children has been developed and tested. It includes varied exercises and conditioning exposures, exercises of moderate intensity should make for 65-75%, those of low intensity 15-20%, and those of high intensity 10-15% of their regime. Taking into account the specific features of children, as much as 70% of motor activity should be realized during various organized physical exercise lessons, the younger the child is, the higher activity is. The conditioning exposures should be integrated into all regime elements and performed in a warm comfort. Mild long-term and severe short-term conditioning exposures directed to target portions of the body and the whole body and performed at different energy levels (motor activity) will favour the higher efficiency of conditioning.
