Effects of coronary artery diseases on haemorheological parameters and trace elements.

The effects of coronary artery diseases on haemorheological parameters (blood viscosity, erythrocyte deformability and haemoglobin level) and serum trace element (Cu,Zn) levels were investigated. Subjects were 16 male patients having coronary artery disease. Three blood samples were drawn pre-operation and at the 10th and 30th day after operation. To determine the effects of by-pass surgery on haemorheological parameters and serum trace elements, we used a centrifugal method for erythrocyte deformability, Harkness relative viscometer for blood viscosity, spectrophotometry for haemoglobin level, and atomic absorption spectrophotometry for trace elements. Parameters of coronary artery patients were compared with normal values.

[Pharmacokinetics of trace elements by noncompartmental analysis in rats (Part 1): Significance of the pharmacokinetic parameters].

Six-week-old male Wistar rats were administrated the radioisotopes of five trace elements (iron, zinc, copper, manganese and iodine) intravenously in order to elucidate the significance of their pharmacokinetics by noncompartmental analysis. The mean residence time (MRT) and variance of residence time (VRT) increased in the order Mn, Cu, I, Fe and Zn. Neither MRT nor VRT indicated any statistical significance between I and Fe. These results suggested that Mn and Cu were voided rapidly from the plasma, whereas Zn persisted in the plasma for the longest time among these elements. Though I and Fe showed quite different plasma disappearance curves, both were considered to diminish at almost the same speed. The volume of distribution at steady state (Vdss) increased in the order Cu (32 ml), Fe (62 ml), I (149 ml), Mn (185 ml) and Zn (1012 ml). The distribution coefficient (Kd) of these elements increased in the same order as Vdss did. For Cu and Fe, Vdss was intermediate between the plasma volume and total body fluid volume of the rat, while, for the others, Vdss was greater than the total body fluid volume. In particular, Vdss of Zn was the greatest among these elements. Hence, the present study suggested that the plasma concentrations of Cu and Fe may reflect their body contents fairy well, though those of I, Fe and Zn can hardly do so. Vdss and Kd are, therefore, considered to be useful as supplementary diagnostic indices to understand the plasma concentrations of trace elements. Systemic clearance (CLs) increased in the order Fe (0.02 ml/min), Zn (0.07 ml/min), I (0.21 ml/min), Cu (0.37 ml/min) and Mn (4.61 ml/min). The CLs of Mn was similar to the hepatic plasma flow rate of the rat in size, indicating that the Cls of Mn may be one of the greatest among trace elements. It appeared, therefore, that when administered intravenously, Mn may be transferred from the plasma to the tissues more easily than the other elements.

[Quantitative nutritional reconstruction by trace element data].

Cemeteries without grave goods permit conclusions on the social structure of the underlying population by morphologic skeleton characteristics alone only very restrictedly; though, this social structure may manifest itself in varied nutritional habits, which mirror for their part in the trace element spectra of the skeletal material. A proportional interrelation between Sr-Ca-ratio in food and Sr-Ca-ratio in bone exists, the proportionality factor (observed ratio = OR) being known; the same goes for Ba. This linearity is not given any longer concerning the interrelation between nutritional habits, i.e. the shares of the single food stuffs, and the trace element concentrations of the food and by that of the bone. This makes the use of statistic procedures (cluster analysis) upon the initial trace element data unreliable, so reconstruction of the actual nutrition is necessary. Suitable equation systems do not only supply the wanted individual nutritional habits, but also indicate the metabolism of other trace elements.

[Study on relation of kidney-deficiency with hearing damage and serum trace elements in patients with chronic nephropathy].

The hearing and serum trace element of 73 cases of chronic nephropathy were measured. Results showed that the incidence of hearing damage in high frequency was 68.5% with a mean hypoacusis of 35.1 +/- 6.1 dB, while in 55 patients of Kidney Deficiency type, the incidence of hearing damage in high frequency was 83.6%, it was significantly higher than that in patients without Kidney Deficiency. The serum levels of trace elements (iron and zinc) in patients with Kidney Deficiency were lower than that of normal level and in patients without Kidney Deficiency, and the decrease of serum iron was directly proportional to the degree of hearing damage. There were close relationship between the Kidney Deficiency with the hearing damage as well as the serum levels of iron and zinc.

Variation in the distribution of trace elements in hepatoma.

There are many reports of reduction of zinc level and rise of copper level in serum of patients with liver disease. However, there are a few reports that compare the trace elements in tumor tissues and nontumor tissues of the liver with hepatoma. We studied trace element distribution in tumor tissues and nontumor tissues of liver with hepatoma and compared them with data from normal liver tissues. Zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), selenium (Se), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), and iron (Fe) were chosen as the trace elements to be observed. We observed falls of Zn, Cd, and Hg levels in tumor tissues and the rise of Cu level as a result of this investigation. Zn, Cd, and Hg levels in tumor tissues were significantly lower than those in nontumor tissues and Zn, Cd, and Hg levels in nontumor tissues were significantly lower than in normal liver tissues. This tendency was clearer for Cd and Hg than for Zn. Although the distribution of Cu was not significant, a distribution contrary to that of Zn was shown. These findings indicate that the distribution of Zn, Cd, and Hg can serve as supportive evidence that could be useful as a tumor marker. Selenium showed almost the same accumulation tendency among tumor tissues, nontumor tissues, and normal livers. Although correlation was observed among most metals in the normal liver, there was almost no correlation in tumor tissues.

Trace element and vitamin concentrations and losses in critically ill patients treated with continuous venovenous hemofiltration.

OBJECTIVES: To measure the blood concentrations of a number of trace elements and vitamins in critically ill patients and examine their elimination by continuous venovenous hemofiltration (CVVH). SETTING: Intensive care unit of a tertiary institution. DESIGN: Prospective, controlled, clinical study. PATIENTS: Eight critically ill patients requiring renal replacement therapy, nine patients requiring intensive care treatment but not requiring renal replacement therapy, and nine healthy controls. INTERVENTIONS: Measurement of trace element and vitamin concentrations in blood and ultrafiltrate. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Compared with normal volunteers, critically ill patients requiring CVVH had significantly lower median blood concentrations of vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, and zinc. During the first 24 hrs of CVVH, there were no changes in the trace element and vitamin concentrations in blood, nor were there differences between pre- and postfilter samples. Micronutrient losses in the ultrafiltrate were small or undetectable except for Vitamin C, chromium, and copper. Compared with normal volunteers, critically ill patients not requiring CVVH also had significantly lower median blood concentrations of vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, and zinc. There were no differences between the two critically ill groups. CONCLUSIONS: The clinical significance of the reductions in blood concentrations of selenium, zinc, vitamin C, and vitamin E in critically ill patients and the ultrafiltrate losses of Vitamin C, copper, and chromium remains unclear.

[Effects of acupuncture on blood pressure, SOD,LPO and five kinds of trace elements to stenosis of renal artery caused hypertension in rats].

Changes of blood pressure, superoxide dismutase (SOD), lipid peroxidation (LPO) and concentration of five kinds of trace elements including Cu, Zn, Fe, Ca, Mg were observed before or after acupuncture treatment in the stenosis of renal artery caused hypertension in rats [correction of mice]. It was demonstrated that acupuncture in the points of Zusanli, Neiguan, Sanyinjiao and Yongquan in mice could reduce the blood pressure significantly and influence the concentrations of SOD, LPO and five kinds of trace elements in the stenosis of renal artery caused hypertension in mice. The possible mechanisms of acupuncture in reducing the blood pressure and influencing the changes of SOD, LPO and five kinds of trace elements were also discussed.

[Determination of trace elements in lychee of different growth periods].

Conditions for determination of multi-trace elements simultaneously in lychee fruit by ICP-AES. Al, Ba, Cr, Mg, Mn, Sr, Mo, Pb, Se, Zn, Fe, Cu and Ca in different parts and different growth periods of lychee fruit in Dongguan area were determined, relative standard deviation of the method is between 1.3%-4.9%, and recovery is between 89%-124%, analytical results were satisfactory. And compared the concentration and distribution of those trace elements with those in other areas. We find that the concentration of Mo in lychee fruit sample we determine is much lower, which implies that we can improve the production and quality of lychee by applying Mo to the tree. Some elements essential to human such as Zn, Fe, Mg and Ca are high in lychee fruit, implied that nutritive value of this fruit breed is higher.

Relationship between trace elements status in mane hair and atrial fibrillation in horse.

To investigate the relationships between trace elements concentrations in hair and atrial fibrillation (AF) in horses, concentrations of nineteen trace elements were detected in hair using the particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE) method. The horses were assigned to either control (n=22, no abnormalities) or AF groups (n=5) based on electrocardiograph findings. The mean concentrations of Ca and Zn in the hair of the AF group were significantly higher than those in the control group. The Zn/Cu ratio of the hair in the AF group (29.8 +/- 5.5) was significantly higher than that in the control group (23.4 +/- 2.2, P<0.05). The results of the present study suggest that there is a relationship between elevated concentrations of Ca and Zn in hair and AF.

[Trace element content in the blood and organs in arteriosclerosis].

The content of 10 trace elements was studied by employing the neutron-activation method and the lead level determined through the spectral analysis in the whole blood, aorta, the heart muscle, liver, intesties (small and large), in the pancreas, adrenal glands, the spleen, lungs of accident victims, among whom 87 were practically healthy and 91 had atherosclerosis. The latter demonstrated in a number of organs (especially in the aorta and liver) a reduction in the content, which increased with age and intensity of atherosclerotic changes, of nickel, manganese, zinc, cobalt, vanadium and iron and rise in the lead, gallium, copper, bismuth and bromine level. The disclosed data bear witness to a definite part played by a number of trace elements in the atherogenesis.

Dephytinization of a rat diet. Consequences for mineral and trace element absorption.

Soaking of a rat diet, high in both plant phytate and phytase, progressively degraded the phytate content with time of soaking. This dephytinization in turn enhanced the digestion of feed organic matter in the animals, and it significantly improved the absorption and retention of minerals and trace elements as observed in balance studies. Incorporation of elements into specific tissues was evaluated as a reflection of bioavailability. Some tissues did reflect the preceding absorption of certain elements; other tissues seemed less suitable as indicators of trace element absorption. Dietary calcium addition in many ways contrasted the soaking procedure: inorganic calcium addition to the feed reduced phosphorus, magnesium, and trace element bioavailability, and interfered with the internal deposition of the elements. The external dephytinization of the feed did not affect the phosphohydrolase activity of the intestinal mucosa as manifested by alkaline phosphatase activity or phytase activity. The mucosal phytase and alkaline phosphatase activities were, however, mutually correlated, supporting the view that "phytase" activity is a less substrate-specific action of alkaline phosphatase activity or a fraction of this activity.

Distribution of trace elements in streambed sediment associated with mining activities in the upper colorado river basin, colorado, USA, 1995-96

Streambed-sediment samples were collected in the Southern Rocky Mountains physiographic province in the Upper Colorado River Basin in Colorado to characterize the occurrence and distribution of trace elements in mined and nonmined areas of the basin. During October 1995 and September 1996, streambed sediment was collected at 37 sites, and the samples were analyzed for trace elements. The ranges in concentrations of As, Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn at mining sites generally were orders of magnitude higher than the ranges of concentrations at nonmining sites. Sampling sites located in two predominant rock types in mining areas were not significantly different (p > 0.05) for concentrations of As, Cd, Pb, and Zn. Cu was significantly different (p < 0.05) between sites in the two predominant rock types. Concentrations of As, Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn were not significantly different (p > 0.05) between main-stem sites and tributary sites. Concentrations of As, Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn exceeded established guidelines for adverse effects on aquatic biota at some sites in the study area. The patterns in concentrations of Cd and Zn, Cd and Pb, and Pb and Zn were highly correlated to one another in this study. Concentrations of trace elements in the <63-&mgr;m fraction were higher than in the total particle-size fraction analysis. Comparison of reference sites to sites affected by a mine source indicated that trace-element concentrations initially increased downstream of the source and then gradually decreased in concentration with distance from the source.http://link. springer-ny.com/link/service/journals/00244/bibs/37n1p7.html

Relationships among multiple trace elements in coastal Casuarina equisetifolia ecosystems on Hainan Island, South China.

Forty-six trace elements in coastal Casuarina equisetifolia plant-soil systems at nine sampling sites on Hainan Island were analyzed using ICP-MS. The relationships among the trace elements of the same group or the same periodicity of the Periodic Table in the plants and soils were complex and no consistent patterns were found. More combinations of elements occurred with high positive correlation coefficients within the same periodicity than within the same group of the Periodic Table, and there were more high positive correlations in soils than in plants. However, there were many element combinations in Block d (transition elements) with high positive correlation coefficients in plants. Markedly high positive correlation coefficients between individual rare earth elements and Y and among Zr, Nb, Cd existed in both plants and soils. The dendrograms obtained by cluster analysis show that rare earth elements had very similar occurrence and distribution in both soils and plants. Thus, they behaved as a coherent group of elements both geochemically and biogeochemically. The transition elements were more coherent in plants than in soils.

[Trace element contents in the transparent lens and the senile cataract lens].

The contents of trace elements Zn, Mn, Cu and Fe in 38 senile cataract lenses and 37 transparent lenses were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. It was found that the contents of the elements in senile cortical cataract lenses were markedly different from those in transparent lenses. Comparing transparent lenses with senile nuclear cataract lenses, there was only difference in the content of Mn. It was therefore inferred that the occurrence of senile cataract was directly related to the deficiency of trace elements.

Uptake of various trace elements during germination of wheat, buckwheat and quinoa.

The practice of sprouting is widely used to improve the nutritional value of grain seeds. Several nutritive factors such as vitamin concentrations and bioavailability of trace elements and minerals increase during germination. The objective of this work was to study the enrichment of various essential trace elements during germination of wheat (Triticum aestivum), buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum), and quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa) seeds in order to improve their nutritional role as a source of bioavailable trace elements. Seeds were sprouted either in distilled- or tap-water and in five different electrolyte solutions to investigate the concentration-dependent uptake. The time-dependence was investigated by analyzing aliquots of the sprouts after certain germination periods. Samples were analyzed after freeze drying for their Li, V, Cr, Fe, Mn, Co, Cu, Zn, Sr, Mo, As and Se concentrations with inductively-coupled plasma mass-spectrometry (ICP-MS). As a control for possible changes in the biochemical metabolism of the sprouts, the biosynthesis of vitamin C was also determined by using reversed-phase ion-pair HPLC. It was shown that quinoa was the most resistant to the applied electrolyte solutions and had the highest uptake rates for almost all elements, followed by buckwheat and wheat. Greatest increases were observed for Co, Sr, and Li. No significant changes in vitamin C biosynthesis were observed between sprouts grown in different electrolyte solutions. The time-dependent uptake for most elements was characterized by a significant absorption during soaking of the seeds, followed by a lag phase during the first day of germination and an increased uptake during the second and third day. Se and As showed distinctly different uptake behaviors.

Trace element deficiencies in cattle.

Deficiency of cobalt, copper, iron, iodine, manganese, selenium, or zinc can cause a reduction in production. Reduced production occurs most commonly when a deficiency corresponds to the phases of growth, reproduction, or lactation. Because of environmental, nutrient, disease, genetic, and drug interactions, deficiencies of single or multiple elements can occur even when the levels recommended by the National Research Council for these nutrients are being fed. Additionally, random supplementation of trace elements above National Research Council recommendations is not justified because of the negative interaction among nutrients and potential toxicosis. Evaluation of trace element status can be difficult because many disease states will alter blood analytes used to evaluate nutrient adequacy. Proper dietary and animal evaluation, as well as response to supplementation, are necessary before diagnosing a trace element deficiency.

Trace element and Sigma DDT concentrations in horticultural soils from the Tasman, Waikato and Auckland regions of New Zealand.

The long-term routine use of agrichemicals can result in elevated levels of trace elements and persistent organic pollutants in soils. Trace element concentrations and SigmaDDT levels were measured in soil (0-7.5 cm) samples collected from horticultural and grazing properties in 3 regions of New Zealand (Auckland, Tasman and Waikato). Elevated levels of arsenic (<2 to 58 mg kg(-1)), cadmium (<0.1 to 1.5 mg kg(-1)), copper (5 to 523 mg kg(-1)), lead (5 to 243 mg kg(-1)) and SigmaDDT (<0.03 to 34.5 mg kg(-1)) were detected in soils from all 3 regions. With the exception of cadmium and zinc, significantly higher levels of contaminants were generally detected in horticultural soils than in grazing soils. Our results have implications for the on-going use of agrichemicals as concentrations of cadmium, copper, tin and zinc in some samples exceeded ecotoxicity based soil criteria. The p,p'-DDE:DDT ratios indicate that the degradation of DDT in NZ horticultural soils may be inhibited by the co-contamination with trace elements.
