[A different view on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: a didactic resource on mental functioning].

In this study we emphasize the personality characteristics, trying to amplify the mental functioning matter facing the richness of a work based on a tale. We aim to worth the mental functioning of each dwarf as a personality involved on na emotional drama, exploded by the jealousy of the stepmother about the youth and beauty teen-age stepdaughter. On the other hand, we expect this theme can be used as didatic resource about the mental functioning, serving as a practical, simple and dynamic guide for the professor in classroom, as for Psychiatric Nursing as for Medicine ones, specializing on Psychiatry, in their initial learning phase.

Genetic and morphological variation in three snow pool Aedes mosquito species of the subgenus Ochlerotatus (Diptera: Culicidae).

Thirteen Aedes hexodontus Dyar populations from throughout the western United States were examined for genetic and morphological variation. Analysis of allozyme frequencies at 16 loci revealed a pattern of genetic variation that formed a north-south cline across Washington, Oregon, and California in the number of alleles per locus, the percent of polymorphic loci, and the frequency of one allele of aconitase-1. Comparison of the genetic profile of Ae. hexodontus populations to two other widely distributed members of the punctor subgroup, Aedes punctor (Kirby) and Aedes abserratus (Felt & Young), revealed only one diagnostic locus for all three species. Seven loci exhibited frequency differences among species but were not diagnostic. Morphological characters also exhibited little variation within and among the three species. The adult females differed only in the scaling of the probasisternum. This area was extensively scaled in 91% of Ae. hexodontus specimens but bare or only lightly scaled in Ae. puntor and Ae. abserratus. No other differences were observed in the adult females or the male genitalia in any of the three species. The larvae of Ae. abserratus could be separated by the single-branched seta 2-X. Six larval characters differed between Ae. hexodontus and Ae. punctor but the ranges of each character overlapped and none were diagnostic. These comparisons indicated that Ae. hexodontus is a single species, at least in the southern part of its range. Also, genetic and morphological comparison of the three species within the punctor subgroup attested to the close relationship hypothesized for these mosquitoes.

Snowed under.

The escalating use of cocaine is having a major impact on many A&E departments, especially in urban areas. Nurses can feel out of their depth when managing patients who present with a mix of social, physical and mental health problems. Debate centres on whether this patient group should be managed by general A&E nurses, specialists or a combination of the two.

Snow skiing.

There are many inherent difficulties in the collection of epidemiologic ski data, but important trends have been identified. Further investigation into controllable risk factors is currently in progress in an attempt to reduce injury incidence, along with prophylactic strength training and conditioning programs. A comprehensive ski-specific training program entailing training of the energy systems, isolated and kinetic chain strength training, skill-specific training, and psychological training is essential to ensure the optimal performance and safety of the skier. Rehabilitation issues also can be addressed in the context of the above elements.

[Cracks in the dental enamel caused by sensitivity testing with CO2 snow and dichloro-difluoromethane--a comparative in vivo study].

With the aid of permeating dye and standardized fluorescence UV-photography, the reaction of subjects and enamel to the application of two pulp vitality testing methods (frozen carbon dioxide and Frigen -pellets) was examined. The enamel lamella system, the diffusion of temperature changes through the tooth crown and the thermodynamic pattern of enamel and dentine are described in detail. Structural changes of enamel as well as the subject's reaction times to a cold stimulus during the vitality tests are documented and the data are compared. Frigen caused less enamel changes than did frozen carbon dioxide. The subject's reaction times were similar for both methods. There were no differences between the methods with regard to the number of reopened, extended and newly created enamel fissures. However, the length, width and depth of these fissures proved to be less pronounced for Frigen than for carbon dioxide. Clinical implications of the results are discussed.
