A set of polypropylene squeeze-bottles, containing serial dilutions of pyridine in mineral oil, are used to deliver puffs of accurately odorized air to the nose. The patient's olfactory threshold can be quantitatively measured in a few minutes, and placed in the normal, hyposmic or hyperosmic range of sensitivity.

The olfacto-respiratory reflex is qualified for detection of an olfactory perception. Three methods for breathing registration are compared. Olfacto-rhinorheometry is recommended as the best practicable method. With 84% of normal persons, olfactorily-induced reflecting breathing change could be registrated by this technique.

The routine test of olfaction need not lead to an ambiguous outcome, a rather widely held notion. A multiple-choice test of odor identification that avoided the difficulty of retrieving odor names yielded excellent resolution among the categories normosmic, hyposmic, and anosmic. The outcome agreed almost perfectly with a more complicated test of threshold and offered much encouragement for the use of odor identification in rapid screening of olfaction.
