OBJECTIVE: To compare in vitro and in vivo absorptive capacities of modified Schirmer tear test strips with those of original strips, and to establish reference values for use with the modified strips. DESIGN: Prospective study. ANIMALS: 100 dogs. PROCEDURE: In vitro absorptive capacity was determined by immersing strips in an irrigating solution for 15 seconds and recording amount of wetting. In vivo absorptive capacity was determined by placing an original Schirmer tear test strip in 1 eye and a modified strip in the other eye of 50 dogs with normal or abnormal tear production. Time required to wet 10 mm of each strip was recorded. Measurements were repeated 30 minutes later after reversing which strip was placed in the left or right eye. Reference values (mean +/- SD) were determined by recording the time required to wet 10 mm of the modified strip in 50 healthy dogs. RESULTS: Amount of wetting was significantly less and time required to wet 10 mm was significantly greater for the modified strip, compared with the original strip. Reference values determined for the modified strip were 32 +/- 11 seconds in the right eye, 33 +/- 11 seconds in the left eye, and 32 +/- 10 seconds in both eyes. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Absorptive capacities of the original and modified Schirmer tear test strips were significantly different. Reference values determined for 1 strip should not be used for the other strip.
OBJECTIVE: To assess bacteriological quality of drinking water in Punjab and to evaluate usefulness of H2S strip test in comparison with multiple tube test. METHOD: Samples of water were tested using H2S strips and multiple tube test. RESULTS: Maximum bacterial contamination was observed in water from domestic pumps (95.83%). Followed by tap water in rural areas of Punjab (91.30%) and tap water in Lahore (42.85%). Bacterial contamination was significantly higher (p < 0.001) in rural areas as compared to urban areas. Comparison of results of testing water samples by H2S strip test and multiple tube test revealed that H2S strip is 87.24% sensitive and 100% specific for detection of bacterial contamination with a positive predictive value of 100%. It was also observed that 100% water samples negative for total coliforms were also negative by H2S strip method. Moreover, with increase in number of total coliforms in the water samples, positivity by H2S strip method also increased (samples with more than 10 total coliforms/100 ml were 100% positive by H2S strip method). Therefore, H2S strip test can be used as alternative to multiple tube test for detection of bacterial contamination of water supplies. CONCLUSION: It is concluded that bacterial contamination of water is a significant problem in Punjab. It can be improved by regular monitoring of water supplies. For this purpose use of H2S strip test is advocated at house hold level.

A modified 1-min iodometric paper strip test for penicillinase activity was developed for detection of beta-lactamase-producing isolates of Haemophilus influenzae and Neisseria gonorrhoeae. The test is simple to perform and uses reagent-impregnated strips that may be stored for 1 year or more prior to use.
Widely differing results were obtained for urinary protein determinations in male rats using 2 test strips and a quantitative Coomassie Blue sodium dodecyl sulphate method. A comparison of the sensitivity of the protein methods with respect to rat albumin and alpha 2U globulin was made; both test strips were found to be relatively insensitive to the presence of alpha 2U globulin. Resultant limitations of test strips in monitoring adult male rat urine protein concentrations are discussed.
