[Direct identification of Ophiogon japonicus (Thunb.)Ker-Gawl. from its confusable varieties by second derivative FTIR spectroscopy combined with statistics].

In order to establish the theory and method for the identification of Ophiogon japonicus (Thunb.)Ker-Gawl. of traditional Chinese herbal medicines and its confusable varieties, second derivative FTIR spectroscopy was used combined with statistics. Samples were collected directly by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectra with OMNI-Sampler. Then through converting FTIR spectra of the samples into second derivative spectra by derivative spectra software, Ophiogon japonicus (Thunb.)Ker-Gawl. could be identified from the confusable varieties with statistics. The result shows that the second derivative FTIR of Ophiogon japonicus (Thunb.)Ker-Gawl. and its confusable varieties are different, which differ greatly in 2 000-650 cm(-1) range in second derivative FTIR spectroscopy. The Ophiogon japonicus (Thunb.)Ker-Gawl. and its confusable varieties can be identified by identifying the inner layer parts of the cuticles of samples by second derivative FTIR spectroscopy with statistics directly, rapidly and accurately.

Profile of animal bite cases in Pune.

A Cross-sectional study was carried out to determine the profile of animal bite cases reporting to the Anti Rabies clinic of Sassoon Hospital, rune. The data was collected using pretested questionnaire. All 250 cases who reported during the period of study were included in the analysis. The male female ratio was 1.98 : 1. Children in the age group 0-14 years were the victims in 132 (52.8%) cases. Dog was the biting animal in 94.4% cases, followed by cat (2.4%), Jackal (1.2%), mongoose (1.2%), monkey (0.4%) and horse (0.4%). Of the 236 dog bite cases 30% of bites were inflicted by pet dogs of which only 38.02% were immunized. The wound was washed with soap and water in only 3.6% of cases. 64.8% of the bites were on the lower extremity and 63.2% of cases reported within 24 hours of the bite. Of the 247 cases administered Beta Propio Lactone (BPL) inactivated vaccine only 18.8% did not have any local reaction and 58.3% had one or more systemic reaction. A three pronged strategy has been recommended to reduce the burden of morbidity and mortality associated with rabies.

Immunopathogenicity and oncogenicity of murine leukemia viruses. II. Infection of mice and rats with Scripps leukemia virus.

The pathologic consequences of infection of newborn mice and rats with MuLV (Scripps leukemia virus--SLV) were observed. Serum MuLV p30 concentrations of most strains were elevated 20 to 100 times that of controls while MuLV gp70 levels were elevated only 1.1 to 14.8 times, probably reflecting in part the higher concentrations of gp70 in control sera but also indicating the lack of parallelism in regulation of synthesis of these two viral antigens. Infected mice of most strains developed immunologic diseases, including antinuclear antibody and glomerulonephritis, but not Coombs' antibodies. The nature and severity of the immunologic disease varied considerably, depending upon the genetic character of the host. Most infected animals developed lymphatic leukemias, but four strains showed partial to complete resistance to SLV oncogenesis: BALB/c (nude); C57 Bl/6; (NZB times NZW) F1, and (NZW times BALB/c) F1.

Orungo virus, an orbivirus from Africa: effects of physical and chemical agents.

Orungo virus is relatively sensitive to lipid solvents and sodium deoxycholate. It is readily inactivated at 37 degrees C and above, by u.v. irradiation, BP and formalin. Orungo virus is ph 3.0 labile, but stable at ph range of 5.0-7.0. Multiplication of Orungo virus in BHK-21 cell cultures is not affected in the presence of 5-iododeoxyuridine.

[Interferons produced by human leukocytes after induction with influenza virus].

Influenza virus induces in human leukocytes the production of 3 types of interferon: 1--acid-labile, produced up to 3 days; 2--acid-stable, produced for 24 hours; 3--acid-stable, produced up to 3 days and showing antiviral activity in heterologous culture of cow embryo lungs alone. The heterogeneity of properties of the 3 interferon types appears to reflect heterogeneity of molecular weights of its components.

[Effects of different sterilizing techniques on osseous regeneration of grafted lyophilized cartilage].

The suitability of variably sterilized lyocartilage grafts as potential bone substitutes was investigated in animal experiments with special attention to configurational stability. In 3 Beagles corticocancellous implant beds were prepared by box-type ostectomies and lyophilized costal cartilage blocks sterilized with X-rays,ethylene oxide gas and beta-propriolactone solution were placed into them. Implants sterilized with X-rays and beta-propriolactone appeared to be unsuited for recontouring facial bone defects, since they showed complete loss of configuration after a follow-up time of 125 and 230 days, respectively. By contrast, cartilage implants sterilized with ethylene oxide gas retained their configuration after no less than 328 days. In light of these results, methods for sterilizing other biomaterials should be re-considered.

[Possible decontamination of pancreatin with gamma rays and chemical agents].

Certain pre-conditions given, the microbial contamination of pancreatin in powder form can be reduced below international standard values. However, each of the methods whether physical or chemical, causes a variable loss of activity depending on the methods applied and the concentration of the decontaminating agent used. Therefore during preparation of this complex enzymatic compound, highly aseptic conditions must be kept in all stages of the process to avoid an increase of germal contamination. For a final toxicological assessment of the decontaminated products, further tests are required.
