[Identification study of different Flos Trollii by IR].

OBJECTIVE: To establish a method to identify different Flos Trollii with IR spectra and to provide a new technique for their science estimation and quality identification. METHODS: Their IR spectra were obtained by the method of intuitionistic analysis-selecting point to normalization. RESULTS: Differences on the shape, the position, the height and the relative intensity of absorption peaks were shown in IR spectra of the ten samples. CONCLUSIONS: Different Flos Trollii can be identified using IR spectra obtained by the method of intuitionistic analysis-selecting point to normalization. This new method can be used to study the identification features of the influence factors of Traditional Chinese Medicine quality.

[Determination of capsaicin in Pheretima aspergillum from different habitats by RP-HPLC].

OBJECTIVE: To determine the content of hypoxanthine in Pheretima aspergillum from different habitats. METHOD: A RP-HPLC method was established. The chromatographic column was Inertsil ODS-EP. The mobile phase was H2O-CH3OH-C4H8O(93:: 7: 0.05). The flow rate was 1.0 ml/min, and the detection wavelength was 254 nm. RESULTS: The average recoveries for hypoxanthine was 98.6% , precision of the method was 0. 50% (RSD, n = 6). CONCLUSION: The method can be used to determine the content of hypoxanthine in Pheretima aspergillum from diffrent habitats.

[Studies on extraction process optimization of Panax notogingseng saponins].

OBJECTIVE: To optimize the conditions for the extraction of panax notogingseng saponins (PNS). METHODS: After selected extraction solvent and suitable particle, we employed orthogonal experimental design to examine the conditions for the extraction by determination of PNS. RESULTS: Significant effect was observed only in extraction times. CONCLUSION: The optimum condition for extraction of PNS was to extract panax notogingseng (Burk.) F. H. Chen with 10 times 70% ethanol for 1.5 hours for 3 times.

[Preliminary pharmaphylogenetic study on Ranunculaceae].

OBJECTIVE: To deal with the correlation between phylogeny, chemical constituents and pharmaceutical aspects of Ranunculaceae, namely a pharmaphylogenic study of this taxon. METHOD: Based on chemical, pharmaceutical (both ethnopharmacologic and pharmacological) information, linking with different plant systems of Ranunculaceae. RESULT: Chemical constituents of this taxon included several natural groups: benzylisoquinoline alkaloid, ranunculin, triterpenoid glycoside and diterpene alkaloid etc. Ranunculin and magoflorine were found to present simultaneously in some plants of this taxon. CONCLUSION: Combining with therapeutic information, pharmaphylogenic research were in accordance with the phylogenetic system presented by Tamura that Ranunculaceae was proposed to be divided into six sub-families: Helleboroideae, Ranunculoideae, Cimicfugoideae, Isopyroideae, Thalictroideae and Coptidoideae. Results also supported the establishment of Cimicifugoideae.

[The application of infrared spectra and clustering analysis in the discrimination of geographical origin of Flos Chrysanthemi].

OBJECTIVE: To identify the origin of Flos Chrysanthemi. METHODS: FTIR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy) and SIMCA (sofe independent modeling of class analogy). RESULTS: The correctness of every classification was higher than 60%. CONCLUSION: This approach was proved to be a reliable and practicable method for the discrimination of geographical origin of Chrysanthemum.

A systematic study on confused species of Chinese materia medica in the Hong Kong market.

As more and more people worldwide begin using Chinese herbs, authentication of these herbs becomes an increasingly critical, international problem. Mistakes, misidentification, or willful deception can cause illness and even death. Questionable authenticity with regard to Chinese herbs arises for a number of historical, geographical and nomenclatural reasons, which will be described in this paper. The current situation in the Hong Kong market and some suggestions for alleviating the problem are also discussed.

[Study on the Chinese drug beimu. IX. Microscopic identification of the upper epidermis of the scales of Fritillaria bulls].

Beimu, a famous traditional Chinese drug, has been used as an antitussive and expectorant for a long time and it is derived from a number of species of Fritillaria. So it is difficult to identify exactly the botanical origin of the commercial crude drugs by means of macroscopic examination. This paper deals with the microscopic identification of the upper epidermis of the scales of 20 species. The result showed that these species are different from each other in the shape and size of the epidermal cells, the shape, size and arrangement of the cuticular peg. Moreover, it was found that the anticlinal wall of the epidermal cells is not bead--thickened, but cuticular peg formed by cuticle.
