[A pathological study on 662 autopsy cases of chronic cor pulmonale. The National Pathological Cooperative Group of Cor Pulmonale].

According to the unified diagnostic criteria and methods, 662 cases of cor pulmonale autopsy were accepted and the acceptable rate was 88.5%. Additionally, a data base with IBM PC/XT computer and dBASE-III was established in which the data of all cases accepted were stored, processed and analyzed. The results showed that chronic bronchitis and emphysema were the primary pulmonary diseases of chronic cor pulmonale in China. Chronic bronchiolitis and peribronchiolitis were considered as the late stage of bronchitis causing damage to lung tissues and constituting the central link of such complications as pulmonary hypertension and right ventricular hypertrophy. The authors emphasize also that the cellular elements and extracellular matrix were the major reason in decreasing pulmonary vascular compliance, while dilation of the lumen of pulmonary small arteries was probably the secondary change of pulmonary hypertension. According to the results obtained, it is considered that hypertrophy of the supraventricular crest can be used as one of the diagnostic criteria of right ventricular hypertrophy due to pulmonary hypertension.

[Psychoreactive disorders: clinical description of pathologic reactions, pathologic reactive states and reactive psychoses].

After the introduction to the problem presented in the first part, the author submits a description of clinical units. The aim is to provide documentation of his concept and to unify the understanding of these conditions into a uniform system; conditions which, although adequately described, are included among different disorders and their classification and description is not uniform. The need of this description is urgent not only because the new generation of psychiatrists does not know the original classification but also because knowledge of these conditions has expended and this calls for new evaluation and description.

[Mixed infections in the pathology of blood-sucking larvae pathology. 2. Entomopathogenic properties of bacterioviral complexes].

Mixed infection of the mosquitoes' larvae of the first age group by densonucleasis virus and entomopathogenic strains of Pseudomonas fluorescens and Serratia marcescens enhanced viral infection in the presence of toxicosis induced by exogenic entomotoxic bacterial metabolites. Possibility of interaction between bacterial cells and the mosquito densonucleasis virus, producing an adverse effect on the duration of the disease, was demonstrated. Duration of the disease provoked by bacterioviral infection of the larvae was of a specific character: nontypical degeneration and untimely replacement of intestinal epithelium at the fourth larval stage were observed along with acute viral lesions of all the tissues.

Anatomic viral detection is automated: the application of a robotic molecular pathology system for the detection of DNA viruses in anatomic pathology substrates, using immunocytochemical and nucleic acid hybridization techniques.

This paper presents the first automated system for simultaneously detecting human papilloma, herpes simplex, adenovirus, or cytomegalovirus viral antigens and gene sequences in standard formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue substrates and tissue culture. These viruses can be detected by colorimetric in situ nucleic acid hybridization, using biotinylated DNA probes, or by indirect immunoperoxidase techniques, using polyclonal or monoclonal antibodies, in a 2.0-hour assay performed at a single automated robotic workstation.

[Distinction between pathological and non-pathological premature contact].

By casting the corresponding parts of a wax plate showing premature contact af fine silver and by measuring the thickness of non-punctured places it was ascertained that premature contacts protruding from the occlusion plane at most by 0.15 millimetres, were frequent but did not cause functional troubles. Premature contacts exceeding such values cause by turns functional troubles.

Experimentally induced bluetongue virus infection in white-tailed deer: coagulation, clinical pathologic, and gross pathologic changes.

Ten yearling white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) were inoculated with bluetongue virus serotype 17. Two yearling white-tailed deer were inoculated with sonicated heparinized noninfected blood and served as controls. Clinical signs of bluetongue virus infection included increased rectal temperature, erythema, facial edema, coronitis, and stomatitis. By postinoculation day (PID) 8, excessive bleeding and hematoma formation at venipuncture sites, dehydration, and diarrhea developed. At necropsy, the most consistent findings were oral lesions and widespread hemorrhage, which ranged from petechia to massive hematoma formation. Bluetongue virus caused progressive prolongation of activated partial thromboplastin time and prothrombin time, and progressive reduction of Factors VIII and XII plasma activities beginning on PID 6. A progressive decrease in platelet numbers also developed on PID 6. Changes in platelet size were not detected. Mean thrombin time was shortened, but prolongation developed in 1 deer. Mean fibrinogen concentration and Factor V plasma activity initially increased and then decreased, but remained above preinoculation values. Factor V activity was low in a few deer. Results of screening tests for inhibitors of the intrinsic coagulation system were positive in 2 deer. High concentrations of fibrin(ogen) degradation products were first detected between PID 3 and 6. Hematologic changes included leukopenia, lymphopenia, neutrophilia, and low total plasma protein concentration. Differences in PCV, hemoglobin concentration, or RBC counts were not detected between infected and control deer. Serum total bilirubin concentration increased by PID 6, primarily because of increased unconjugated bilirubin concentration. Mild to severe increases in serum aspartate transaminase activity were accompanied by more marked increases in creatine kinase activity. Indirect Coombs test results were negative in all deer.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

[Rheumatic activity and clinico-pathologic dissociation. Clinical and pathologic parameters in rheumatic heart disease].

We studied atrial appendages and valvular apparatus from patients undergoing cardiac surgery for rheumatic heart disease, looking for active histologic lesions. After reviewing 673 specimens (1980-1985) we studied two groups: 31 cases with Aschoff nodules or ill-differentiated histopathological lesions, and 31 cases, without tissular inflammatory abnormalities. In the former we found 8 cases with suspected clinical activity in a 3 months period before surgery, in the latter only 2 cases had similar findings. The Jones criteria are not useful for recognizing rheumatic activity among patients with chronic rheumatic heart disease, there is no clinical-histopathological correlations and it is possible that chronic inflammation occurs at the heart as an organ-limited condition.
