Epidemiology is a tool much like any other diagnostic tool that the practitioner uses as an aid in the complete physical examination of the group of animals. It can be used to generate a specific differential diagnosis list. Epidemiology is especially useful to design a disease control and prevention program by helping to elucidate the key determinants of disease occurrence.

Veterinary laboratories which deal with infectious diseases form three groups according to the tasks for which they are responsible. The first group includes central or national veterinary laboratories, national or international reference laboratories, high-security laboratories, district regional or state veterinary diagnostic laboratories. The major role of these laboratories is to assist national Veterinary Services in diagnosing infectious animal diseases. The second group comprises laboratories that produce veterinary diagnostic kits and those that produce veterinary vaccines. The third group is composed of veterinary research laboratories, which generally concentrate on basic research and do not contribute directly to the diagnosis and control of infectious animal diseases. The author describes the objectives of each of the three groups of laboratories.
Surveillance of child day care-related infections (DCRI) is relatively new and methods are evolving. The objectives of surveillance for DCRI include evaluating the occurrence of DCRI; defining epidemiologic features and risk factors for DCRI; identifying practices resulting in transmission of DCRI; providing data and direction for education and training; promoting the efficacy of disease prevention and control programs; providing reassurance to counselors, employees, and the community; and meeting requirements of regulatory and accrediting agencies. An overview is presented of the process and of mechanisms suggested for implementation. The process includes defining the infections, identifying resources, establishing methods for conducting continuous surveillance, consolidating and tabulating data, reviewing and analyzing data, reporting disease and disseminating data, and reinforcing policies for staff and parents. An effective system is one that is applied consistently, is based in large part on common sense and simplicity, and enhances communication among child day care providers, children, parents, and public and private health care personnel.
Over the past decade, microbiology and infectious disease research have undergone the most profound revolution since the times of Pasteur. Genomic sequencing has revealed the much-awaited blueprint of most pathogens. Screening blood for the nucleic acids of infectious agents has blunted the spread of pathogens by transfusion, the field of antiviral therapeutics has exploded and technologies for the development of novel and safer vaccines have become available. The quantum jump in our ability to detect, prevent and treat infectious diseases resulting from improved technologies and genomics was moderated during this period by the greatest emergence of new infectious agents ever recorded and a worrisome increase in resistance to existing therapies. Dozens of new infectious diseases are expected to emerge in the coming decades. Controlling these diseases will require a better understanding of the worldwide threat and economic burden of infectious diseases and a global agenda.

The authors, in view of the continuously changing contagious diseases outline, deal with the problem of a better qualification and reorganization of the direct interventions in the contagious diseases prophylaxis. In this respect, the authors deem that the reporting of the cases must assume a primary importance and that all the locally operating health and social services, where the general medicine practitioners have an integrating part, ought to be redefined in their tasks and reorganized in view of the new outlines. So, it is necessary to found a more flexible reporting system. A bidirectional information flux model is also proposed between the public health-services and the general medicine practitioners.
The game farming and ranching industries have evolved in the late 20th century from earlier domestication efforts in many parts of the world. Preventing transmissions of infectious diseases to, between and from farmed and ranched cervids and bison involves management components similar to those used for other species of domestic livestock. Fencing, handling systems, individual identification, knowledge of the biology of the species and potential pathogens, disease testing, quarantine and vaccination all serve to control the possible negative effects of disease on the commercial success of an operation.
