Internal cesium alters sodium inactivation in Myxicola.

When Myxicola giant axons are internally dialyzed with Cs+ as the sole cation, the time-course of prepulse inactivation is selectively accelerated compared to its rate with K+ dialysis in the same axons. This decrease in tauph occurs without any change in the magnitude or time-course of INa during step depolarizations and results in tauph/taush ratios near unity over most of the potential range in Cs+ dialyzed axons.

Bioaccumulation of cesium-137 by biota in different aquatic environments.

Macroalgae, isopods and fish species were exposed to 137Cs in brackish and sea water conditions for 18 days to determine radionuclide concentration factors. The concentration factors of 137Cs in brown shrimp and polychaete species were also investigated under brackish water conditions. At equilibrium, the concentration factors in macroalgae, isopod, fish, brown shrimp and polychate samples were found to be 2.5, 33, 2, 16 and 11 at 16 degrees C in brackish water conditions, respectively. The accumulation rate in macroalgae species was influenced by temperatures between 6 degrees C and 16 degrees C. The bioaccumulation of 137Cs in isopods at low salinity regime was increased significantly. At the same time, the bioaccumulation rate in macroalgae species also showed slight increase at low salinity. On the other hand, the bioaccumulation rate of 137Cs in the fish species in sea water was higher than in brackish water.

Cesium-137 and mercury contamination in lake sediments.

The contribution of fluvial discharge and global fallout of 137Cs and mercury to sedimentation fluxes in Lake Shinji and Lake Nakaumi, Japan, was studied. The fluvial flux through soil erosion accounted for 11 to 27% of accumulated 137Cs in the sediments in the 1950's and 1960's, which were the periods of the most extensive atmospheric input, and for 90 to 100% in the 1990's. The vertical profiles of mercury concentrations in the lake sediments studied showed a maximum between 1959 and 1963, which was originated mostly from the extensive use of mercury-agrochemicals in paddyfields of the watershed in the past. These findings are representative examples of long-term contamination of lake sediments caused by the contaminated ground soil erosion.

Distribution of cesium-137 in Japanese forest soils: correlation with the contents of organic carbon.

The spatial and vertical distributions of 137Cs in surface soils were surveyed and analyzed then correlated with the contents of organic carbon in the hinoki (Chamaecyparis obtusa Sieb. et Zucc.) plantation forest and secondary forest dominated by red pine (Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc.) in Japan. The spatial variation of 137Cs activity was observed in the surface soil around the red pine. The average activity of 16 samples around the tree is 42.4 Bq/kg and the standard deviation is 25.9 Bq/kg. This finding indicates the importance in the selection of a sampling site and the number of samples from the surface soils especially around a tree. For the vertical distribution of 137Cs activity, it was found that the concentration in the surface soil is highest, 149 Bq/kg in the hinoki stand and 101 Bq/kg in the red pine stand, and decreases with depth. The relationship between 137Cs activity and carbon content in the forest soil was investigated in two undisturbed forest stands. The relations were more precisely expressed using an exponential equation than by a linear equation. From the same forest, similar regression equations were obtained. This indicates that the distribution of 137Cs could be characterized by the organic carbon content in an undisturbed forest. It is also suggested that the coefficient values in the regression equation help to define the movement of 137Cs accompanying the decomposition of organic matter.

Stress induced phase transformation of a cesium stabilized leucite porcelain and associated properties.

OBJECTIVES: The addition of CS2O to dental porcelains might provide a means for controlling the thermal expansion and toughness of feldspathic porcelains. The purpose of this investigation was to determine for a leucite porcelain the effect of CS2O content upon its coefficient of thermal expansion (alpha), toughness, hardness, and content of low (tetragonal) leucite and high (cubic) leucite. METHODS: In order to determine the amount of low leucite in the specimens, an x-ray calibration curve for low leucite and an internal standard of copper was obtained using quantitative x-ray diffraction techniques. Utilizing a stress induced phase transformation between low and high leucite, an x-ray intensity conversion ratio (r) was determined for high leucite so that the calibration curve for low leucite could be used to determine the amount of high leucite present in the experimental porcelains. Specimens were prepared with various amounts of CS2O (0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 mol%) so that, except for the as-received porcelain (A), all had the same thermal history. Specimens were tested for content of low and high leucite, hardness (Vickers), toughness (indentation-strength method), and coefficient of thermal expansion (alpha) over two temperature ranges (30-500 degrees C and 30-640 degrees C). Fractured surfaces were examined with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). For each property, specimen groups were compared for statistical differences. These comparisons were statistically analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Fisher's protected least significant differences (PLSD). RESULTS: Quantitative x-ray examination of abraded and heat-treated specimens demonstrated that a stress induced phase transformation occurred which could be reversed by heat treatment. The conversion ratio was determined as r = 1.93 +/- 0.29. The addition of CS2O lowered the wt% of low leucite from 63 +/- 6% to 0% and increased the amount of high leucite from 0% to 62 +/- 5%. ANOVA showed that the addition of CS2O had a significant effect on alpha (p < 0.0001), hardness (p < 0.005), and toughness (p < 0.0001). CS2O significantly (PLSD) lowered the alpha (p < 0.0001), hardness (p < 0.01), and toughness (p < 0.0001) of a high-content leucite porcelain. SIGNIFICANCE: A stress induced phase transformation of high leucite to low leucite was demonstrated and, as a consequence, suggested the potential for phase transformation toughening. The alpha of a leucite porcelain could be controlled by stabilizing high (cubic) leucite to room temperature with the fraction of high leucite dependent upon the amount of CS2O added. A method was developed to determine the amount of high leucite present in a porcelain.

Maternal cesium chloride ingestion and the newborn.

The effect of pre and postnatal maternal ingestion of CsCl on neonatal growth and development was studied in the Sprague-Dawley albino mouse. The effects of such treatment on selected offspring organ weights, some hepatic and cardiac enzymes were also studied. The CsCl was given in drinking water at conception, during gestation, lactation and throughout the 21 days of breast-feeding of the weanling. The weanlings were separated from the nursing dams for a subsequent 3 weeks and had access to food and distilled water. Maternal Cs treatment caused a sex-dependent decrease of weanling's body weight which attained the control level 3 weeks after discontinued breast-feeding. The offspring's brain and testis weights were decreased from corresponding control while spleen weight was increased during postnatal maturation and in the absence of maternal breast-feeding. Maternal CsCl ingestion resulted in an induction of weanling hepatic ethanol but not acetaldehyde metabolizing enzyme. The hepatic cytoplasmic, but not mitochondrial, NAD-linked aldehyde dehydrogenase was induced 3 weeks later in the developing offspring after cessation of maternal nursing. These neonatal toxicity measurements were not apparent in the maternal tissues studied. There was a differential developmental response in the induction of neonatal hepatic ethanol metabolizing enzyme by maternal exposure to Cs+. The cellular fractionation of developing offspring liver aldehyde dehydrogenase showed that such enzymatic induction was cellular specific and was confined to the subcellular cytoplasmic fraction. The results suggest that Cs+ was most probably transferred to the fetus and/or to breast milk to the suckling newborn.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Cesium migration in Hanford sediment: a multisite cation exchange model based on laboratory transport experiments.

Cs+ transport experiments carried out in columns packed with uncontaminated Hanford formation sediment from the SX tank farm provide strong support for the use of a multisite, multicomponent cation exchange model to describe Cs+ migration in the Hanford vadose zone. The experimental results indicate a strong dependence of the effective Cs+ Kd on the concentrations of other cations, including Na+ that is present at high to extremely high concentrations in fluids leaking from the Hanford SX tanks. A strong dependence of the Cs+ Kd on the aqueous Cs+ concentration is also apparent, with retardation of Cs+ increasing from a value of 41 at a Cs+ concentration of 10(-4) M in the feed solution to as much as 282 at a Cs+ concentration of 5x10(-7) M, all in a background of 1 M NaNO3. The total cation exchange capacity (CEC) of the Hanford sediment was determined using 22Na isotopic equilibrium exchange in a flow-through column experiment. The value for the CEC of 120 microeq/g determined with this method is compatible with a value of 121.9 microeq/g determined by multi-cation elution. While two distinct exchange sites were proposed by Zachara et al. [Geochim. Cosmochim. Acta 66 (2002) 193] based on binary batch exchange experiments, a third site is proposed in this study to improve the fit of the Cs+-Na+ and Cs+-Ca+ exchange data and to capture self-sharpened Cs+ breakthrough curves at low concentrations of Cs+. Two of the proposed exchange sites represent frayed edge sites (FES) on weathered micas and constitute 0.02% and 0.22% of the total CEC. Both of the FES show a very strong selectivity for Cs+ over Na+ (K(Na-Cs)=10(7.22) and 10(4.93), respectively). The third site, accounting for over 99% of the total CEC, is associated with planar sites on expansible clays and shows a smaller Na+-Cs+ selectivity coefficient of 10(1.99). Parameters derived from a fit of binary batch experiments alone tend to under predict Cs+ retardation in the column experiments. The transport experiments indicate 72-90% of the Cs+ sorbed in experiments targeting exchange on FES was desorbed over a 10- and 24-day period, respectively. At high Cs+ concentrations, where sorption is controlled primarily by exchange on planar sites, 95% of the Cs+ desorption was desorbed. Most of the difficulty in desorbing Cs+ from FES is a result of the extremely high selectivity of these sites for Cs+, although truly irreversible sorption as high as 23% was suggested in one experiment. The conclusion that Cs+ exchange is largely reversible in a thermodynamic sense is supported by the ability to match Cs+ desorption curves almost quantitatively with an equilibrium reactive transport simulation. The model for Cs+ retardation developed here qualitatively explains the behavior of Cs+ in the Hanford vadose zone underneath a variety of leaking tanks with differing salt concentrations. The high selectivity of FES for Cs+ implies that future desorption and migration is very unlikely to occur under natural recharge conditions.

Application of the Weibull distribution to describe the vertical distribution of cesium-137 on a slope under permanent pasture in Luxembourg.

The application of solutions of the Advection-Dispersion-Equation (ADE) for soil profiles is sometimes questionable. An alternative method, based on the Weibull distribution, has been developed, which can approximate the vertical distribution of radiocesium (137Cs) and allows extrapolation to account for the complete inventory. The structure of the equation allows simple parameters describing the soil depth profile to be derived. Reliable estimates of the total 137Cs inventory can help to explain the lateral distribution. This equation was used to analyse the 137Cs-activities of Chernobyl fall-out measured on a slope under permanent pasture in Luxembourg.

Vibrational anharmonicity and vibrational Stark effect of sulfate ions trapped in potassium, rubidium and cesium chromate.

Room and low temperature (approximately 100 K) FT-IR and Raman spectra of the sulfate doped K2CrO4, Rb2CrO4 and Cs2CrO4 were recorded. The positions of the nu1, nu3, and nu4 fundamental mode components of the dopant anions were measured. Nine (out of possible ten) second-order stretch-stretch vibrational transitions of the dopant anions were detected. On the basis of these data, the anharmonicity constants and the corresponding harmonic eigenvalues were calculated for several vibrational transitions using second-order perturbation theory expressions. The anharmonicity of the studied second-order transitions of the type nu1 + nu3i increases in the order (SO4/K2CrO4) < (SO4/Rb2CrO4) < (SO4/Cs2CrO4), while for those of the type nu3j + nu3i it basically follows the trend: (SO4/K2CrO4) > (SO4/Rb2CrO4) < (SO4/Cs2CrO4). The measured relative Stark splittings of the nu3 and nu4 mode components of the dopant SO4(2-) anions, as well as the average X13i/3i3j values decrease in the order (SO4/K2CrO4) > (SO4/Rb2CrO4) > (SO4/Cs2CrO4). In all cases, the splitting is larger for nu3 than for nu4 modes, indicating a smaller angular than the bond length distortion. The theory of vibrational Stark effect suggests that the observed frequency shifts of the nu1, nu3 and nu4 mode components may be attributed to the increase of the field strength at the doped anion site going from K2CrO4 to Cs2CrO4. The Stark splitting of these modes, on the other hand, implies that the internal crystalline field vector is almost parallel to the (hypothetical) C2 axis of the slightly distorted dopant tetrahedral anions.

Cesium-137 needle brachytherapy boosts after external beam irradiation for locally advanced carcinoma of the tongue and floor of the mouth.

PURPOSE: A retrospective study was undertaken to compare local tumor control and complications of external beam radiation therapy with and without interstitial 137Cs needle brachytherapy boost doses. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Two hundred one consecutive patients with locally advanced (T3-T4) cancer of the tongue and floor of the mouth treated with definitive radiotherapy by external beam irradiation with (n = 78) or without (n = 123) low-dose-rate interstitial brachytherapy from 1974 to 1999 were analyzed retrospectively. External beam irradiation was administered with conventional fractionation in 105 patients and administered with accelerated hyperfractionation in 96 patients. RESULTS: The 8-year actuarial local control rates showed a trend toward improved results in the combined-treatment group as a whole and also when it was stratified into patients with base of tongue sites and those with oral tongue and floor of mouth sites. Cox regression analysis for local control showed that the only significant variable was overall treatment time. The use of brachytherapy boost doses was not a significant variable. The 8-year actuarial probability of Radiation Therapy Oncology Group and European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Grades 3-5 late effects was 25% and 35% for patients with and without brachytherapy, respectively (p = not significant), although the crude incidence of mandibular radiation osteonecrosis was 10% and 1.6%, respectively (p =0.001). CONCLUSIONS: This study showed a trend toward improved local control rates for brachytherapy after external beam radiotherapy. The incidence of mandibular osteonecrosis was increased.
