Integrating functional genomic information into the Saccharomyces genome database.

The Saccharomyces Genome Database (SGD) stores and organizes information about the nearly 6200 genes in the yeast genome. The information is organized around the 'locus page' and directs users to the detailed information they seek. SGD is endeavoring to integrate the existing information about yeast genes with the large volume of data generated by functional analyses that are beginning to appear in the literature and on web sites. New features will include searches of systematic analyses and Gene Summary Paragraphs that succinctly review the literature for each gene. In addition to current information, such as gene product and phenotype descriptions, the new locus page will also describe a gene product's cellular process, function and localization using a controlled vocabulary developed in collaboration with two other model organism databases. We describe these developments in SGD through the newly reorganized locus page. The SGD is accessible via the WWW at http://genome-www.stanford.edu/Saccharomyces/

Can semantic information be transferred between hemispheres in the split-brain?

Data from experiments with split-brain patients, who have had their left and right hemispheres disconnected, suggests a remarkable specialization of function within each hemisphere. At the same time, these patients conduct their daily lives with great proficiency. This ability suggests that some information integral to coordinated function between the hemispheres is available in the absence of the corpus callosum. Is information about the semantics of words one type of information that is shared? An experiment by suggests that it may be. Lambert reported that living/nonliving word categorization was delayed when disconnected hemispheres processed words belonging to the same category. Although other interpretations are plausible, Lambert described this effect as having a semantic source. We attempted to replicate the original effect with two additional split-brain patients, J.W. and V.P., and to extend the original design to clarify the source of the putative semantic effect. Our results indicate that any semantic interaction between the split hemispheres is not reliable. As such our study adds to the growing literature indicating that subcortical transfer of semantic information is more illusory than real.

Education of medical informatics in Bosnia and Herzegowina.

Time of information in which the authors live resulted in the increase of the amount of the information exponential growth of the new kind of knowledge, flourishing of the familiar ones and the appearance of the new sciences. Medical (health) informatics occupies the central place in all the segments of modern medicine in the past 30 years--in practical work, education and scientific research. In all that, computers have taken over the most important role and are used intensively for the development of the health information systems. Following activities develop within the area of health informatics: health-documentation, health-statistics, health-informatics and bio-medical, scientific and professional information. The pioneer in the development of the health statistics and informatics in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) was Dr Evgenije Sherstnew, who was the Chief of Health Statistics in the Ministry of Health of BiH from 1946-1952, and who founded and led, from 1952 to the end of his life, the Department of Medical Documentation and Health Statistics of the Central Health Institute of BiH, the core around which a group of experts for the development of this field have gathered. In the eighties computers were intensively used as a tool for the processing medical data and with them the development of health information systems at the level of the outpatient-clinics, hospitals, clinical centers, as well as the integral information system of health, health insurance and the social security system of BiH began. Finally, Society for Medical Informatics of BiH, which as a professional association gathers experts in the area of health informatics, actively propagates this profession in the Republic, was founded. With reform of the lectures and curriculum at the medical faculty in Sarajevo, the course in 'Medical Informatics' has been in 1992. into the second semester, since it was assumed that an early insight into the principles of information along with studies of so called basic pre-clinic sciences, especially basics of information, would make things easier for the students the more informative education is in the course of their medical studies. The medical faculty in Sarajevo also established and accepted a course of health informatics and economics of post-graduate studies in 1979, of which the main objective is education of experts for work informatics jobs in health care system and services, especially for needs of the future information systems in BiH.

Prediction of performance from motivation and ability information in Burkina Faso adolescent.

Many studies, using information integration theory, have been devoted to the prediction of performance on the basis of ability and motivation information. However, it appears that only two societies. American and East Indian, have been examined with regard to their prevalent performance prediction model. Participants in this study were school children in Burkina Faso, West Africa. Considerable differences between individuals were expected because, as a consequence of colonization, Burkina Faso has been torn between two different value systems: a collectivistic system, with traditional tribal Burkinabè values, and an individualistic system, with occidental values. The study's most notable finding was the coexistence of these two value systems within the same society. The predominant logic of Western societies, that increased motivation will result in increased rewards when initial ability is high, was utilized by 42% of the children; in contrast, 38% of the children applied the dominant logic expressed by East Indian researchers, who have found that regardless of the level of ability, any amount of motivation will result in an identical improvement in performance.

Interference and integration: the fan effect in children and adults.

In three experiments, we explored (1) possible developmental changes in interference and (2) the use of integration processes to eliminate them. Two versions of the fan effect procedure were used. Results of Experiment 1 with unrelated sentences showed similar fan effects for 12-13-year-old children and adults. In Experiment 2, the sentences were thematically related so that it was possible to use elaboration processes to construct integrated representations. Under these conditions only adult participants eliminated the fan effect. In Experiment 3 a new procedure was used where children and adults studied highly familiar material in an organised manner. The results showed that in these conditions children integrated information and reduced interference. Thus, prior knowledge and organisation seem to be important factors to create meaningful integrated representations in memory.

[Longitudinal study in the elderly in The Netherlands: an inventory focused on policy relevance].

With the purpose of gathering policy relevant information on changes in functioning of older persons, in 1989/1990 an inventory was made of longitudinal research in the Netherlands in which data on the older population are collected. The inventory resulted in a list of over thirty studies in a wide range of disciplines. The stage of these studies was updated in mid-1992. In this paper, the studies are categorized according to ten themes relevant to the policy on aging. The themes are based on the Lalonde model of prevention and on the WHO classification of impairments-disabilities-handicaps, which were extended to the full life sphere of older persons. Each study is briefly described. For each theme is indicated what contribution the existing research can make to the policy relevant information sought. It is concluded that thus far no comprehensive, multidisciplinary study was available which can provide integrated information on changes in functioning of older adults.

Temporal properties of binocular mechanisms in the human visual system.

A dichoptic stimulation paradigm was used to determine the degree to which the two monocular images must match in terms of the temporal properties to yield facilitation in binocular grating detection. Several converging lines of evidence point to the existence of two separate neural mechanisms in binocular detection. One of these mechanisms is selective for temporal frequency and limited in its capacity to integrate information from the two eyes over time. The other mechanism is much less selective for temporal frequency and integrates over a longer period of time. At threshold these two separate mechanisms behave independently and exhibit similar degrees of binocular summation.

Geographically-decentralized planning and management in health care: some informational issues and their implications for efficiency.

Geographically decentralized planning and management is an emerging theme within the health sector in many OECD countries. Advocates of decentralization argue that providing greater authority to local decision-making bodies can improve both the technical and allocative efficiency with which health care systems operate. Using concepts drawn from organizational theory and the economics of organizations, we examine the potential of centralized and decentralized planning and management structures to be efficient in light of the informational problems that must be overcome to allocate resources efficiently. We focus in particular on the need to integrate information regarding: (1) the effectiveness and efficiency of alternative clinical interventions and of alternative ways organize the delivery of health care; (2) the needs, values, and preferences in the population; and (3) local circumstances that affect delivery of care across regions. Informational concerns suggest that decentralized structures have greater potential to be efficient. We then briefly discuss some principles for the design of decentralized structures to aid in realizing these potential efficiency gains.

A relational schema for both array-based and SAGE gene expression experiments.

MOTIVATION AND RESULTS: A relational schema is described for capturing highly parallel gene expression experiments using different technologies. This schema grew out of efforts to build a database for collaborators working on different biological systems and using different types of platforms in their gene expression experiments as well as different types of image quantification software. The tables are conceptually organized into three categories of information: Platform, Experiment (which includes image scanning and quantification), and Data. The strengths of the schema are: (i) integrating information on array elements using a gene index; (ii) describing samples using ontologies; (iii) reducing an experiment to a single RNA source for precise descriptions yet not losing the relationships between experiments done at the same time or for the same project; and (iv) maintaining both raw and processed (e.g. cleansed and normalized) data and recording how the data is processed. The result is a novel schema, which can hold both array and non-array data, is extensible for detailed experimental descriptions that are precise and consistent, and allows for meaningful comparisons of genes between experiments.

Histone Sequence Database: new histone fold family members.

Searches of the major public protein databases with core and linker chicken and human histone sequences have resulted in the compilation of an annotated set of histone protein sequences. In addition, new database searches with two distinct motif search algorithms have identified several members of the histone fold family, including human DRAP1 and yeast CSE4. Database resources include information on conflicts between similar sequence entries in different source databases, multiple sequence alignments, links to the Entrez integrated information retrieval system, structures for histone and histone fold proteins, and the ability to visualize structural data through Cn3D. The database currently contains >1000 protein sequences, which are searchable by protein type, accession number, organism name, or any other free text appearing in the definition line of the entry. All sequences and alignments in this database are available through the World Wide Web at http://www.nhgri.nih. gov/DIR/GTB/HISTONES or http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih. gov/Baxevani/HISTONES

Intelligent infrastructure for sustainable potable water: a roundtable for emerging transnational research and technology development needs.

PROBLEM STATEMENT: Recent commercial and residential development have substantially impacted the fluxes and quality of water that recharge the aquifers and discharges to streams, lakes and wetlands and, ultimately, is recycled for potable use. Whereas the contaminant sources may be varied in scope and composition, these issues of urban water sustainability are of public health concern at all levels of economic development worldwide, and require cheap and innovative environmental sensing capabilities and interactive monitoring networks, as well as tailored distributed water treatment technologies. To address this need, a roundtable was organized to explore the potential role of advances in biotechnology and bioengineering to aid in developing causative relationships between spatial and temporal changes in urbanization patterns and groundwater and surface water quality parameters, and to address aspects of socioeconomic constraints in implementing sustainable exploitation of water resources. WORKSHOP OUTCOMES: An interactive framework for quantitative analysis of the coupling between human and natural systems requires integrating information derived from online and offline point measurements with Geographic Information Systems (GIS)-based remote sensing imagery analysis, groundwater-surface water hydrologic fluxes and water quality data to assess the vulnerability of potable water supplies. Spatially referenced data to inform uncertainty-based dynamic models can be used to rank watershed-specific stressors and receptors to guide researchers and policymakers in the development of targeted sensing and monitoring technologies, as well as tailored control measures for risk mitigation of potable water from microbial and chemical environmental contamination. The enabling technologies encompass: (i) distributed sensing approaches for microbial and chemical contamination (e.g. pathogens, endocrine disruptors); (ii) distributed application-specific, and infrastructure-adaptive water treatment systems; (iii) geostatistical integration of monitoring data and GIS layers; and (iv) systems analysis of microbial and chemical proliferation in distribution systems. IMPACT: This operational framework is aimed at technology implementation while maximizing economic and public health benefits. The outcomes of the roundtable will further research agendas in information technology-based monitoring infrastructure development, integration of processes and spatial analysis, as well as in new educational and training platforms for students, practitioners and regulators. The potential for technology diffusion to emerging economies with limited financial resources is substantial.

[Diagnostic imaging and patient database managing systems: The integration of digital information in the experience of an intensive care center].

AIM: To present our experience with integrating digital information on Intensive Care Unit patients (clinical data, laboratory findings, imaging, etc) to create electronic patient records. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Using the hospital Intranet, a connection was established between the Local area Network (LAN) of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and the Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM(R)) network of the Radiology Department allowing to receive, process and archive digital images locally at the ICU. Using the software RADclient-RADimage, the information received was managed by an electronic patient record system (DIGISTAT by UMS-Unterberger Medical Software, Florence). All the above software runs on Microsoft WindowsNT 4.0 platforms. RESULTS: Images of various kinds and formats (CT, MRI, etc.) pertaining to the ICU patients were semi-automatically handled and filed on a local server acting as a central databank. The images were then included in the electronic patient record and made available to the end user who could view them using either web technologies (hypertexts were automatically generated that could be viewed through the widely available World Wide Web browsers) or specific viewing utilities supplied with DIGISTAT . DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: For the intensivist, the handling and filing of data on hospitalised or discharged patients for treatment or research purposes involves having to process large amounts of information. Furthermore, in the event of patients being re-admitted to the unit, it is crucial to have ready access to all the information regarding previous hospital stays, including diagnostic images, to avoid the need for time-consuming searches through the hospital s paper-based archives. The possibility to access clinical information and diagnostic images using a single computer programme proved to be useful both for evaluating the patient s conditions immediately after the imaging procedure and for monitoring the patient s progress over time by comparing the different diagnostic images and imaging procedures. This pilot experience could be seen to provide the basic know-how for applying the method in the future Emergency Department of the A. Gemelli Hospital in Rome.
