Denture tooth selection: an analysis of the natural maxillary central incisor compared to the length and width of the face. Part I.

A project was devised by the removable prosthodontic faculty to determine clinically if there is a correlation between the length and width of the maxillary central incisor on a cast and the length and width of the face. A millimeter gauge was used to measure the lengths and widths of the maxillary incisor on a cast. The Trubyte tooth indicator was selected to measure the length and width of the face. This tooth indicator is designed for calibration of the 16 to 1 ratio between facial dimension and maxillary central incisors.

A technique for making an esthetic maxillary complete denture surgical stent.

A technique for making an esthetic complete denture as a surgical stent to be used in conjunction with hydroxyapatite augmentation surgery of the maxillary arch is presented. The technique involves the use of an articulator, a remount jig, and duplication of a surgically prepared cast.

Duplication of anterior provisional fixed partial dentures for the final restoration.

Using the provisional restoration as a testing ground to increase the predictability of a final restoration is well understood. With the resolution of issues through a well-developed provisional restoration comes the challenge of duplicating its contours in the final prosthesis. A method is described using elastomer impression putty and a molten wax technique by which the contours of a provisional anterior fixed partial denture can be duplicated. The described method is particularly useful when the replication of a specific irregular tooth arrangement is mandated.

Prosthetic restoration of the anterior edentulous space.

The dentition of partially edentulous patients with an anterior modification space may be restored in several ways. If a removable partial denture is selected as the treatment of choice, denture tooth selection, direct retainer display, and anterior-posterior rotation may be sources of concern for the patient and dentist. A way to overcome the treatment problems associated with these partially edentulous patients is use of a Hader bar and clip-retained removable partial denture with the attachment of an anterior porcelain-fused-to-metal facade. This article describes this treatment option and the technique for fabrication.

The position of the neutral zone in relation to the alveolar ridge.

Included in this study are 21 edentulous patients. They were classified according to their period of edentulousness into two groups. One group was edentulous from 1/2 to 2 years. The other group was edentulous for more than 2 years. The neutral zone (NZ) was located for each patient by using record bases, and an impression compound as the occlusion rim. A 30-gauge stainless steel wire was adapted along the center of the alveolar ridge on the final cast. A 24-gauge stainless steel wire was adapted and stabilized over the center of each occlusion rim. An occlusal view radiograph was obtained of each recording base and its cast. Each film was placed in a viewing box and the relationship between the images of the two wires in the buccolingual direction was studied in the anterior, premolar, and molar regions on the left and right sides. Where the two images coincided a zero score was given. In the case of buccal location a plus scores was given, and where there was a lingual location of the (NZ), a minus score was given. All measures were taken in millimeters. Statistical analysis was performed between the two groups. The longer the period of edentulousness, the more buccally/lingually located was the NZ.

Laboratory wear investigation of resin posterior denture teeth.

This investigation compared the wear resistance of three "improved" resin posterior denture tooth formulations with two conventional products on a mechanical toothbrush abrasion machine. The ability of the teeth to resist this type of abrasion was evaluated by determination of the weight loss during 339 hours of brushing with firm nylon bristle toothbrushes. All brands exhibited negligible loss, with the conventional brands performing better than the "improved" formulations.

Esthetic and functional considerations for implant restoration of the partially edentulous patient.

Many esthetic and functional considerations are reviewed for the partially edentulous implant candidate. With the availability of adjunctive grafting procedures, it is time for the implant team to change the traditional treatment planning approach that allows patient anatomy to dictate implant position and prosthesis design. Dimensions of the edentulous space and evaluation of occlusal relationships are discussed. Soft tissue ridge contour and creation of favorable cervical harmony are also reviewed. Functional demands unique to the partially edentulous patient are outlined in addition to the challenges of creating a prosthesis with natural cervical form and emergence profile.

Dental Implantation, Endosseous↗

A method to remold worn acrylic resin posterior denture teeth and restore lost vertical dimension of occlusion.

A method is described for remolding and correctly restoring abraded posterior denture teeth. By adding a layer of paraffin wax for jaw registration, the dentist can repeat the registration procedure until the proper jaw relation is established. This wax occlusal record is used as a guide during the remolding, and is incrementally replaced by autopolymerizing resin.
