In vitro actions of purified plerocercoid growth factor (PGF) were compared with those of insulin and human growth hormone (hGH) in adipose tissue from normal male rats. Insulin-like effects were measured by the ability of PGF, insulin, or hGH to stimulate oxidation of [U-14C]glucose to 14CO2, to stimulate lipogenesis, and to inhibit epinephrine-induced lipolysis. PGF and insulin stimulated significant increases in glucose oxidation and lipogenesis in adipose tissue that had not been preincubated as well as in tissue that had been preincubated. hGH stimulated insulin-like effects only in tissue that had been preincubated for 3 hr. Insulin, hGH, and PGF inhibited epinephrine-induced lipolysis of preincubated (3 hr) adipose tissue. hGH produced a dramatic lipolytic response in tissue freshly removed from normal rats but no dose of PGF was lipolytic. PGF did not displace 125I-insulin from its receptors on adipocytes but did competitively inhibit 125I-hGH binding to adipocytes. These results suggest that PGF has direct insulin-like actions which are initiated by binding a GH receptor, but PGF had no anti-insulin action and the insulin-like activity of PGF was unaffected by refractoriness of adipose tissue to GH.

Complex antigen mixtures displayed in Western blots may be immediately and quantitatively categorized with respect to specificity and immunogenicity by immunoplotting. This involves plotting the frequency with which each antigen band reacts with a set of immune sera against the frequency of the same band when reacted with another set of immune sera. Immunoplotting has proven to be a powerful method of analyzing Western blots of reactions between vesicular fluids from the metacestodes of Taenia solium, E. granulosus, and T. crassiceps, and sera from human cases of neurocysticercosis and hydatid disease. Immunoplotting readily sorts out those antigens useful for discriminative immunodiagnosis from the multitude of bands in the sera of sick and healthy people. It aids in assessing the antigenic similarity between the human parasites and the murine parasite T. crassiceps, validating the latter as an alternative source of antigens for immunodiagnosis of cysticercosis and hydatid disease.

Native and exotic fishes were collected from 29 sites across coastal and inland New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria, using a range of techniques, to infer the distribution of Bothriocephalus acheilognathi (Cestoda: Pseudophyllidea) and the host species in which it occurs. The distribution of B. acheilognathi was determined by that of its principal host, carp, Cyprinus carpio; it did not occur at sites where carp were not present. The parasite was recorded from all native fish species where the sample size exceeded 30 and which were collected sympatrically with carp: Hypseleotris klunzingeri, Hypseleotris sp. 4, Hypseleotris sp. 5, Phylipnodon grandiceps and Retropinna semoni. Bothriocephalus acheilognathi was also recorded from the exotic fishes Gambusia holbrooki and Carassius auratus. Hypseleotris sp. 4, Hypseleotris sp. 5, P. grandiceps, R. semoni and C. auratus are new host records. The parasite was not recorded from any sites in coastal drainages. The only carp population examined from a coastal drainage (Albert River, south-east Queensland) was also free of infection; those fish had a parasite fauna distinct from that of carp in inland drainages and may represent a separate introduction event. Bothriocephalus acheilognathi has apparently spread along with its carp hosts and is so far restricted to the Murray-Darling Basin. The low host specificity of this parasite is cause for concern given the threatened or endangered nature of some Australian native freshwater fish species. A revised list of definitive hosts of B. acheilognathiis presented.
HYMENOLEPIS DIMINUTA: adults were killed and fixed in fully extended positions, and the total lengths of the strobilae, numbers of proglottids, and distances of proglottids along the strobilae were determined. The relationship of proglottid number to distance along the strobila was exponential. Beginning at proglottid 100 (P100), the lengths and widths of proglottids at 100 proglottid intervals were determined, and the surfaces areas were calculated. The relationships of proglottid length and width to proglottid number were linear, but the relationship of proglottid number to surface area (SA) was exponential. The volumes of proglottids were calculated, and the relationship of volume (V) to proglottid number was exponential. The relationship of surface area to volume ratio (SAVR) to proglottid number was exponential; at the anterior end of the worm (P100), the SAVR was 14.6, while at the posterior end of the worm (P1300) the ratio was 4.2. A single exponential equation describing the relationships among proglottid number, SA, and V was derived.
