To obtain an adequate cervical smear for making a correct cytologic diagnosis, smear taking, laboratory handling and interpretation must be optimal. Many people are involved, and only by a combined effort of all links can this target be seriously approached: the smear takers will have to be open minded about technical improvements and read the morphologic descriptions cautiously; in the laboratory, cytotechnicians and physicians will have to challenge themselves and each other. It is mandatory to discard specimens that do not meet general standards of adequacy. At present a host of new techniques are being implemented. It is not feasible for all laboratories to be engaged in testing these new methods, but we are all requested to follow the development the best we can and switch to new ways when justified. Our working conditions are very different; therefore, it is our professional responsibility and plight to respond at the right time. So far the conclusion is that the conventional Pap smear is the international standard of care for the diagnosis of cervical cancer precursers in cancer screening programs. Certainly, this may change within a very short time. Liquid-based techniques, and in particular HPV technologies, are just around the corner.

Despite strong evidence of high rates of childhood and adult trauma in schizophrenia, the area remains under-researched. Our objectives in the study were first, to examine the rates of exposure to childhood, adult and lifetime (child plus adult) trauma in a population with schizophrenia and a population with non-psychotic psychiatric diagnoses and second, to examine the effect of trauma on the symptoms of schizophrenia. Two groups, those with schizophrenia (n = 40), and those with a non-psychotic diagnosis (n = 30), were recruited. Data were collected for demographic, psychiatric and trauma histories for all participants and on psychosocial functioning and psychiatric symptomatology for the patients with schizophrenia. Childhood exposure to trauma was significantly more common in the schizophrenia group (t = 5.196, df = 68, p < 0.001, Eta squared = 0.28), with the strongest relationship being childhood physical assault. In the schizophrenia group a history of trauma was significantly related to poor communication skills (r = -0.529, p < 0.001) and depressive symptoms (r = 0.443, p = 0.004). Evidence that childhood exposure to trauma is more common in a population with schizophrenia is consistent with other studies and raises the possibility that such trauma is of etiological importance. Further research is required to replicate those findings, to elucidate possible pathways by which the experience of trauma may contribute to the development of schizophrenia, and to explore the relationship between a history of childhood trauma and the experience of depressive symptoms in schizophrenia.
The use of haplotype information in case-control studies is an area of focus for the research on the association between phenotypes and genetic polymorphisms. We examined the validity of the application of the likelihood-based algorithm, which was originally developed to analyze the data from cohort studies or clinical trials, to the data from case-control studies. This algorithm was implemented in a computer program called PENHAPLO. In this program, haplotype frequencies and penetrances are estimated using the expectation-maximization algorithm, and the haplotype-phenotype association is tested using the generalized likelihood ratio. We show that this algorithm was useful not only for cohort studies but also for case-control studies. Simulations under the null hypothesis (no association between haplotypes and phenotypes) have shown that the type I error rates were accurately estimated. The simulations under alternative hypotheses showed that PENHAPLO is a robust method for the analysis of the data from case-control studies even when the haplotypes were not in HWE, although real penetrances cannot be estimated. The power of PENHAPLO was higher than that of other methods using the likelihood-ratio test for the comparison of haplotype frequencies. Results of the analysis of real data indicated that a significant association between haplotypes in the SAA1 gene and AA-amyloidosis phenotype was observed in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, thereby suggesting the validity of the application of PENHAPLO for case-control data.
Pigeons were trained in a higher-order conditional discrimination paradigm to assess the role of physical identity in a within-subjects design. A line orientation which was super-imposed on all response keys signalled whether a response to the matching color or a response to the nonmatching color was correct. Following training under this paradigm, stimulus control gradients were obtained by varying the angularity of the lines. Orderly gradients of stimulus control were obtained and no bias toward or away from the physically identical comparison stimulus was observed. The data were interpreted as indicating that the pigeons acquired a discrimination for each specific stimulus configuration or a set of specific stimulus-response chains based on compound stimuli in which physical identity played no special role.
