Examining the validity of the Academic Motivation Scale by comparing scale construction to self-determination theory.

This study examined the construct validity of the Academic Motivation Scale. Specifically, subscale correlations were examined to assess whether support for a continuum of self-determination would be provided. The three types of Intrinsic Motivation were significantly and positively correlated with each other .67, .62, and .58, while the three types of Extrinsic Motivation were significantly and positively intercorrelated .50, .49, and .45. The former subscales, however, correlated higher with Introjected Regulation than Identified Regulation, suggesting that Introjected Regulation may be indicative of more self-determined behavior than has previously been believed. Also, the Intrinsic Motivation To Accomplish subscale had a stronger relationship with two of the Extrinsic Motivation subscales, Identified Regulation and Introjected Regulation, than did the Extrinsic Motivation subscales with each other. This suggests that the differences between Extrinsic and Intrinsic Motivation are not as obvious as has been believed. Also, contrary to self-determination theory, Amotivation had a stronger negative correlation with Identified Regulation (r = -.31) than with any of the Intrinsic Motivation subscales (rs = -.27, -.19, and -.11).

Performance comparison of a pilot-scale membrane bioreactor and a full-scale sequencing batch reactor with sand filtration: treatment of low strength wastewater from a northern Canadian Aboriginal Community.

Northern Aboriginal communities in Canada suffer from poor wastewater treatment. Treatment systems on 75% of Manitoban Aboriginal communities produce substandard effluent despite the presence of sophisticated treatment systems. A 200-litre, pilot-scale membrane bioreactor (MBR) was established on the Opaskwayak Cree Nation to investigate the feasibility of MBRs in mitigating Aboriginal wastewater treatment issues. The pilot system was remote controlled and monitored via the Internet using the program pcAnywhere. The community utilized two existing sequencing batch reactors (SBR) and three sand filters for wastewater treatment. The community wastewater was relatively weak and highly fluctuating which led to poorly settling sludge that readily fouled the sand filters. A comparison study between the MBR and SBR was undertaken from September to December 2003. Operated at a 10-hour hydraulic retention time and 20-day solids residence time, the MBR outperformed the SBR and sand filtration on BOD and suspended solids removal. Furthermore, the MBR showed high levels of nitrification despite relatively cold water temperatures.

[The WP scale, an evaluation scale of anxious inhibition].

The phenomenon of inhibition concerns a feeling of being blocked in usual functioning. It is frequently encountered, in many disorders. Using a general model of anxiety, the authors propose a taxonomy of the phenomenon into inhibition in anxiety states and inhibition associated with other disorders, a differentiation between generalized inhibition and specific inhibition, and between primary and secondary inhibition. Generalized inhibition due to anxiety can be assessed through use of the WP, which is a rating scale developed for this purpose by the authors.

[Development and validation of a quality of life scale associated with health status, specific for benign hypertrophy of the prostate and including a sexuality evaluation scale].

In order to develop a quality of life scale related to the state of health, specific for benign prostatic hypertrophy, a group of French specialists constructed a self-administered questionnaire, designed to complete the usual evaluations of the efficacy and safety of new medical treatments for this disease. This questionnaire was well accepted, reliable, clinically valid and sensitive to clinical changes occurring in a given patient. It includes questions concerning sexuality. An abbreviated form of the questionnaire was then developed in order to obtain a tool suitable for use in daily practice, in combination with the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPPS).

Process scale considerations in evaluation studies and scale-up.

This paper focuses on the scale of validation studies that are performed in order to demonstrate viral clearance in downstream processing of biopharmaceutical products. A serious concern for rDNA-derived proteins from recombinant mammalian cell cultures and monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) derived from hybridoma cultures is the potential risk from contaminating retroviral particles or adventitious viruses. Accordingly the downstream process has to be designed to reduce a potential virus load significantly: by virus removal and by virus inactivation methods. Such viral clearance is essential for drug safety- and has to be validated. This means that the design of downstream processing has to take into consideration both the capability for viral clearance and the capability for validation respectively.

Neuropsychological impairment scale (NIS): initial validation study using trailmaking test (A & B) and WAIS digit symbol (scaled score) in a mixed grouping of psychiatric, neurological, and normal patients.

Described a 50-item, self-administered neuropsychological screening test with test results correlating with three reference measures for three participant groupings--Normals (N = 22), Psychiatric patients (N = 21) and Neurological patients (N = 14). Results suggest that neuropsychological self-description can correlate with performance measures that are known to be sensitive to cognitive impairment.

Stress and skin diseases in musicians: evaluation of the beck depression scale, general psychologic profile (the brief symptom inventory [BSI]), beck anxiety scale and stressful life events in musicians.

We had previously investigated skin problems of musicians (N = 117) working in a professional orchestra. The results of this survey suggest a significant incidence of occupational and stress-related skin problems in musicians such as hyperhydrosis, lichen planus, psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis and urticaria. It was thought that emotional factors exacerbate their problems [6]. This article discusses the importance of psychiatric consultations in dermatologic problems.
