Feline plague in New Mexico: report of five cases.

Naturally acquired plague was diagnosed in 5 domestic cats. The cats apparently contracted the disease through contact with sylvatic rodents or their fleas in plague-enzootic areas. Radiographic manifestations of plaque in New Mexico, 1975-1980. A review of 42 proved cases.

The radiographic findings in 42 proved cases of plague are examined. There was a high association between bilateral alveolar infiltrates and secondary pneumonic plague; however, these findings were not completely specific, as they were also seen in some patients who had disseminated intravascular coagulation or shock lung, In an endemic area and in the proper clinical setting, any patient with bilateral alveolar infiltrates should be considered to have secondary pneumonic plague until proved otherwise.

Presbyterian Healthcare Services: New Mexico's managed care leader.

In 1997, PHS enhanced its presence in the managed care market by adding a large HMO to its health plan and snagging the largest part of state Medicaid managed care contracts. The health plan, once the source of only 15% of the system's revenue, is fast becoming the dominate component of the healthcare delivery system--a source of discontent for those who liked the old system. Find out the strategy behind these changes and plans for the future.

Suicide via insulin overdose in nondiabetics: the New Mexico experience.

Four cases of self-injected insulin overdose in nondiabetic individuals are presented. Included are two cases of presumed insulin overdose (no autopsy), one case with elevated vitreous insulin (autopsy), and one case with elevated postmortem blood insulin and low blood C peptide (autopsy). These cases demonstrate the need for a thorough scene investigation, complete autopsy, and proper collection and storage of specimens to certify a death caused by insulin intoxication as well as to determine the manner of death. Appropriate collection and preservation of postmortem blood samples are discussed.

Response of the New Mexico Disaster Medical Assistance Team in St. Croix after Hurricane Hugo.

Our DMAT pulled together with the energy, flexibility, and adaptability necessary to make things work. Sally Coan expressed it best, saying, "I was with a group of people who would do anything [that was] needed." Dedication and trust within the DMAT helped create lasting friendships. The islanders were appreciative and we formed attachments to them that made them too dear to leave without sadness. The DMAT did leave, but we left in place an established medical system that the island would not otherwise have had a standard of care of which we felt proud.

Dog and cat allergens and asthma among school children in Los Alamos, New Mexico, USA: altitude 7,200 feet.

Results from the fielding of the Bio-surveillance Analysis, Feedback, Evaluation and Response (B-SAFER) system in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Public health authorities need a surveillance system that is sensitive enough to detect a disease outbreak early to enable a proper response. In order to meet this challenge we have deployed a pilot component-based system in Albuquerque, NM as part of the National Biodefense Initiative (BDI). B-SAFER gathers routinely collected data from healthcare institutions to monitor disease events in the community. We describe initial results from the deployment of the system for the past 6 months
