Kinematic models of the buccal mass of Aplysia californica.

The feeding behavior of the marine mollusc Aplysia californica is an intensively studied model system for understanding the neural control of behavior. Feeding movements are generated by contractions of the muscles of the buccal mass. These muscles are internal and cannot be visualized during behavior. In order to infer the movements of the muscles of the buccal mass, two kinematic models were constructed. The first kinematic model assumed that the complex consisting of the pincer-like radula and the underlying odontophore was spherical in shape. In this model, the radula/odontophore was moved anteriorly or posteriorly and the more superficial buccal muscles (I1/I3 and I2) were fitted around it. Although the overall buccal mass shapes predicted by this model were similar to those observed in vivo during protraction, the shapes predicted during retraction were very different. We therefore constructed a second kinematic model in which the shape of the radula/odontophore was based on the shapes assumed by those structures in vitro when they were passively forced into protraction, rest or retraction positions. As each of these shapes was rotated, the second kinematic model generated overall shapes of the buccal mass that were similar to those observed in vivo during swallowing and tearing, and made predictions about the antero-posterior length of the buccal mass and the relative location of the lateral groove. These predictions were consistent with observations made in vivo and in vitro. The kinematic patterns of intrinsic buccal muscles I1 and I2 in vivo were estimated using the second model. Both models make testable predictions with regard to the functions and neural control of intrinsic buccal muscles I2 and I3.

Gender differences in disordered eating and its correlates.

The goal of this study was to examine gender differences in the prevalence of disordered eating and body dissatisfaction as well as examine gender differences in several risk factors: mass media, self-esteem and perfectionism. Three hundred fifty-three undergraduates completed surveys about their body dissatisfaction, disordered eating habits, exposure to and influence of mass media, self-esteem and perfectionistic tendencies. As expected, women experienced more symptoms of disordered eating as well as body dissatisfaction than did their male counterparts. There were also gender differences in the risk factors. For women, mass media, self-esteem, and perfectionism related to disordered eating behaviors, whereas for men, only perfectionism and mass media related to disordered eating behaviors. For women, mass media and self-esteem related to body image dissatisfaction, whereas for men, mass media and perfectionism related to body image dissatisfaction. The results of the present study indicate that risk factors for disordered eating and body dissatisfaction for men and women may be different, which has implications for understanding the etiology of body dissatisfaction and disordered eating and for possible treatment interventions.

Investigation of pyrolysis behavior of carbofuran by pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.

Carbofuran is a kind of carbamate pesticide commonly used on major crops. For understanding of the composition variation versus temperature and pyrolysis mechanism, its pyrolysis behavior was simulated and investigated by pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py-GC-MS). The pyrolysates were directly injected for GC-MS analysis. Totally 86 components were determined based on mass spectra library matching with the aid of the correlation of boiling point (bp) and retention time. It was found that carbofuran was obviously decomposed with the temperature increase. A large number of mono aromatics and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were formed when the temperature was higher than 750 degrees C, and the higher was the temperature, the more was the content of the corresponding aromatic hydrocarbon. Besides the aromatic hydrocarbons, there were oxygenous and/or nitrogenous compounds produced in the pyrolysis process. Furthermore, the pyrolysis mechanism of carbofuran was proposed based on the determined pyrolysates and their contents variation versus the temperature. The investigation results can provide the useful information for understanding of the thermal behavior of carbofuran and evaluation of the potential influence of the pyrolysates to living thing and the environment.

The climacteric and well-being.

The climacteric is accompanied by many changes in life, which may give cause to a variety of complaints. Thus, it may be difficult to discern to what extent the climacteric is related to well-being. The association between menopausal status and well-being was determined in a population of 2729 women aged 45-60 years. A self-administered questionnaire was filled out and returned by 1947 women (response 71.3%). Well-being was measured by the Inventory of Subjective Health (ISH) and the three subscales of the Sickness Impact Profile (SIP): social functioning; emotions, feelings and sensations; and intellectual functioning. The relationship between menopausal status and well-being was estimated using linear regression analysis, while adjusting for age and other potential confounding variables, including body mass index, smoking behavior, education, work outside the home, parity, way of cohabitation, difference in age with the partner and partner's employment. The results show that early perimenopausal women report a lower level of well-being as compared to premenopausal women on all three SIP scales. Early postmenopausal women report a lower level of well-being on the SIP emotions, feelings and sensations. Intermediate postmenopausal women have a lower level of well-being on the ISH only. Finally, late postmenopausal women have a lower level of well-being on the SIP social functioning and SIP emotions, feelings and sensations. We tentatively conclude that the influence of the climacteric on well-being independent of confounders is primarily found in behavioral functioning in the daily life of a woman.

Conformation of gramicidin a in water: inference from analysis of hydrogen/deuterium exchange behavior by matrix assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry.

Gramicidin A (the major component of gramicidin D) is a highly hydrophobic peptide with very little solubility in water. Hence, the conformation of this peptide has been extensively investigated in organic solvents and model membranes, but not in water. The peptide adopts a beta6.3-helical conformation in the monomeric and dimeric forms. We have investigated the conformation of gramicidin A in water by monitoring hydrogen-deuterium exchange by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Our results indicate that gramicidin A is monomeric and exists in a highly folded conformation. The metal ion bound forms are clearly discernible in the monomers. The presence of the dimeric form is not observed. It is unlikely this is due to the operating conditions or the method used, as both hetero- and homodimers in gramicidin D are detected when methanol is used as a solvent. The present study also establishes that the linear gramicidins retain a history of solvent environment when ions are generated by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization and analyzed by time-of-flight.

The treatment of insomnia through mass media, the results of a televised behavioral training programme.

An important trend in behavioral medicine is a psycho-educational approach to health problems. A training course aimed at the treatment of sleep disorders has been developed using the following basic principles: (1) a symptomatic approach, (2) emphasis on information on sleep and sleep disorders, (3) self-management, and (4) interventions based on behaviour therapeutic principles that are further developed for the treatment of sleep disorders. Because the results of courses used in primary health care were encouraging, a similar training course of eight programmes was broadcasted by the Dutch educational radio and television station Teleac. About 200,000 people viewed the course, 23,000 of whom ordered the course material. The results of the training course were assessed from a sample (N = 325) by means of a sleep diary in a pre-test, post-test and a follow-up condition. In addition, several questionnaires were used to collect information on personality factors and on physical and psychological complaints. The training produced an estimated decrease in sleep latency of 25 minutes. The duration of sleep increased by nearly 40 minutes. Of the people using hypnotic drugs 40% ceased their use after the course. The training course broadcasted by Teleac is found to be an effective means of improving sleeping behaviour. The results of the course are comparable with interventions that use direct therapist-client contact, suggesting that the presence of a therapist in this approach may not be of crucial importance. The decrease in the use of hypnotics makes the approach cost-effective.

Spurious associations in oral epidemiological research: the case of dental flossing and obesity.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with increased oral health awareness may also have increased general health awareness, and vice versa. Such associations between oral and general health awareness has the potential to induce spurious associations in oral epidemiological research. OBJECTIVE: To assess the extent to which oral self-care patterns and general health awareness are confounded, we investigated the association between flossing and obesity, two lifestyle factors that are unlikely to be causally related. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of 1497 individuals presenting for an initial periodontal exam by the specialist. Self-reported flossing behaviors and body mass index (BMI) categories were related using logistic regression models. RESULTS: After adjustment for confounding variables, lack of daily flossing was associated in a dose-dependent way with morbid obesity (odds ratio (OR), 20.3; 95% confidence interval (CI), 2.7-154.0), obesity (OR, 2.1; 95% CI, 1.5-2.9), and being overweight (OR, 1.7; 95% CI, 1.3-2.2). When restricting to never smokers, a significant relationship between obesity and lack of flossing remained. CONCLUSION: The strong associations between two causally unrelated oral and general lifestyle characteristics indicate that simplistic epidemiologic methodology is unlikely to provide insights into causal mechanisms of oral diseases or oral-systemic relationships.

Structure characterization of hyperbranched poly(ether amide)s. I. Preparative fractionation.

The focus of our investigation lies on the separation of typically broadly distributed hyperbranched poly(ether amide)s into narrow fractions of various molar masses. Their exact molar mass found via size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) with light uttering detection allows us to use these fractions for sample specific calibration in the SEC investigation of other hyperbranched samples. The analysis of the degree of branching, molar mass and viscosity behavior of the fractions gives a first indication about their molecular shape and the contribution of that shape to the overall viscosity. We determined the Mark-Houwink exponent for a hyperbranched sample using a number of narrow fractions which showed that an increase of molar mass leads to an increased molecular density.

Overshoot effect in the Janssen granular column: a crucial test for granular mechanics.

We present experimental results on the mechanical behavior of static granular assemblies confined in a vertical column. Our measurements confirm the universal Janssen scaling for the stress saturation curve. We show consequently, in the context of isotropic elasticity, a relation between the Poisson ratio and the granular packing fraction. Moreover, using a systematic study of the overshoot effect created by a top mass equal to the saturation mass, we show behaviors that are reproduced qualitatively by isotropic elastic materials but of a spectacular amplitude in the case of a granular assembly. These experimental results are strong tests for any theory of granular matter.

Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry and tandem mass spectrometry of clodronate and related bisphosphonate and phosphonate compounds.

The bisphosphonate family with a P-C-P structure is a broad class of drugs, widely investigated as potential inhibitors in bone diseases and calcium metabolic disorders. In this study, the mass spectrometric (MS) behavior and fragmentation of clodronate and related bisphosphonate and phosphonate compounds was studied by using negative ion electrospray ionization (ESI) with triple quadrupole and ion trap instruments. The effect of pH on the degree of deprotonation of the polyprotic bisphosphonic and phosphonic acids in negative ion ESI-MS was investigated, and the degree of deprotonation in the ESI mass spectra and the dissociation in the liquid phase were compared. The results provide evidence that the measured ESI mass spectra do not correlate with the chemistry in the liquid phase owing to the decrease in the pH of the solvent droplets during the ion evaporation process and the charge state neutralization in the gas phase. Ion trap MS(n) provided useful information on the fragmentation study of clodronate and related bisphosphonate and phosphonate compounds, in which interesting fragmentation pathways including the direct elimination of carbon monoxide from deprotonated bisphosphonates and formation of a P-P bond were observed. Reactions between the product ions with a -PO(2) group and residual water in the ion trap or in the high-pressure region of the triple quadrupole instrument formed other unexpected fragmentation paths for all the bisphosphonates studied.

Comparative features of Starling-lymphatic interaction at the pleural level in mammals.

Pleural liquid pressure was measured with saline-filled cannulas in rats, rabbits, cats, pups (4-5 days and 2 mo), small and large dogs, and pigs. On both the costal and mediastinal sides pleural liquid pressure at a level corresponding to the tricuspid valve decreased with increasing body mass; because this behavior was more marked on the mediastinal than on the costal side, a horizontal costomediastinal pleural liquid pressure gradient developed. No differences in liquid pressure were found in animals of different age but of similar size. The protein concentration and the volume-to-body weight ratio of the collected pleural liquid were also found to decrease with increasing body mass. For plasma colloid osmotic pressure, no size-related differences in the Starling balance seem to occur on costal side, whereas such balance shifts toward filtration at mediastinal level with increasing body mass. The lower liquid pressure found with increasing body mass is discussed in terms of lower conductance of the mesothelia and possibly greater lymphatic action. In terms of the Starling-lymphatic interaction we suggest that lymphatics can generate a pressure only slightly lower than that reflecting the equilibrium of the Starling balance of forces.

Modelling migration behavior of peptide hormones in capillary electrophoresis-electrospray mass spectrometry.

The applicability in capillary electrophoresis-electrospray mass spectrometry (CE-ESI-MS) of the classical semiempirical relationships between electrophoretic mobility and charge-to-mass ratio (me versus q/Malpha) has been investigated in order to describe the migration behavior of a series of bioactive peptide hormones. The influence upon the models of the separation electrolyte pH and the accuracy of the pK values of these compounds were studied first by capillary electrophoresis with ultraviolet detection (CE-UV). The classical polymer model, alpha = 1/2, resulted in slightly better correlations at any of the studied pH. Furthermore, a general linear equation can be adjusted combining all the experimental data pairs, which suggests that correlation in the whole pH range is independent of the ionic form of the studied peptide hormones. The plots of q/M1/2 against separation electrolyte pH were used to predict their electrophoretic separations, using the accurate pK values obtained in a previous work by CE-UV for charge calculations. A volatile separation electrolyte containing 50 mM of acetic acid and 50 mM of formic acid at pH 2.85 was selected for optimum CE-UV and CE-ESI-MS analysis of the peptide mixture. At this pH and taking into account the specific features of the coupling, the correlation using the classical polymer law was excellent and its parameters were similar to the ones of the general linear equation previously obtained by CE-UV. This confirmed the applicability in CE-ESI-MS of the semiempirical relationship originally established by CE-UV.

Prevalence and associated factors of diabetes mellitus in Puerto Rican adults: behavioral risk factor surveillance system, 1999.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the self-reported weighted prevalence of diabetes mellitus among different population subgroups and determine associated factors in Puerto Rico. METHODS: Data gathered from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey (BRFSS) during 1999 was analyzed. RESULTS: The weighted prevalence in Puerto Rico in 1999 was 9.6% (95% CI: 8.5%-10.7%), highest than reported nationally. It was higher among individuals with increasing age, female sex, decreasing annual income, decreasing educational attainment, being non-employed, having a health care coverage, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, and increasing body mass index. Health behaviors and co-morbid conditions significantly associated with diabetes among individuals aged less than 65 years were high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, obesity and low educational attainment. However, the only significant characteristic associated with diabetes in individuals aged 65 years or more was female sex. Analysis of the data gathered in the diabetes module revealed that nearly 35% were using insulin, 57.4% were using insulin once a day, 14.4% self-monitored their blood glucose one to three times per day, 18.3% reported they have heard of the glycosylated hemoglobin test, and of these, 71.8% had their test performed between one and six times within the past year. Nearly 42% reported their feet were checked and 54.1% had a dilated eye examination last year. CONCLUSION: The high prevalence of diabetes in Puerto Rico underscores the need for developing integrated management strategies for improving quality of diabetes care.

Demographic and psychosocial correlates of physical activity in late life.

INTRODUCTION: According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization, increasing physical activity may help prolong health and preserve the quality of life in late adulthood. Physical activity has taken center stage as the behavior most likely to alter health. However, there is little recent population-wide information about the demographic and psychosocial correlates of physical activity in the elderly population. The purpose of the study was to identify the factors associated with older adults' frequency of physical activity. The study may have implications for preventive interventions. METHODS: Data for 12,611 community-dwelling people aged > or = 65 from the 1996-1997 Canadian National Population Health Survey were examined. Predictors of frequent versus infrequent self-reported physical activity lasting > 15 minutes were examined using logistic regression analyses. The predictor variables included geographic location, psychological distress (Generalized Distress Scale), demographic factors (age, gender, educational level, and marital status), perceived social support, chronic medical conditions, physical limitations due to injury, functional limitations, smoking behavior, and body mass index (BMI). RESULTS: Gender (male); younger age; higher levels of education; being unmarried; absence of chronic conditions, injuries, and functional limitations; lower BMI; social support (females); nonsmoking; region; and lower levels of psychological distress were associated with frequent physical activity in late life. Older adults in western Canadian provinces were more active than those in eastern provinces. CONCLUSIONS: The results will be useful for the design of interventions aimed at improving older adults' health behavior and other health and functional outcomes, especially for subgroups in particular need. Recommendations for further longitudinal research are presented.

Tracking and predation on earthworms by the invasive terrestrial planarian Bipalium adventitium (Tricladida, Platyhelminthes).

The potential ecological impact of exotic terrestrial planarians will be determined in part by their sensory abilities and predatory behavior. It has been suggested that these flatworms may only encounter their earthworm prey by chance, hence restricting the breadth of species they will feed upon and the number of microhabitats in which predator-prey interactions occur. We hypothesized that those flatworms that have already successfully invaded North America (genus Bipalium) actually detect and follow chemical trails of earthworms and possess the behavioral repertoire needed to feed on the prey in a range of microhabitats. We examined: (1) the tendency of Bipalium adventitium to follow chemical trails left by injured and un-injured earthworms; (2) the behavioral repertoire and predatory success of B. adventitium feeding on three earthworm species in subterranean tunnels; and (3) the response of flatworms to the reportedly defensive secretions of the earthworm Eisenia fetida in tunnels. B. adventitium detected and followed trails of earthworm mucus and secretions left by injured and un-injured earthworms. Flatworms followed trails on a range of substrates and pursued and captured three species of earthworms in subterranean tunnels, including individuals many times their mass. Although most behavior exhibited during underground attacks was similar to that reported for surface encounters, the flatworms also behaved in ways that blocked earthworm escape from tunnels. The flatworms were less successful at preying on E. fetida than on Lumbricus rubellus and Lumbricus terrestris in underground tunnels and showed some aversion to the secretions from E. fetida.

Primary angiosarcoma of the pulmonary arteries: dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI.

PURPOSE: Our goal was to assess the MR appearance and histologic correlation of primary pulmonary artery angiosarcoma. METHOD: Four patients with tumorous masses in the pulmonary arteries were evaluated by dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI using T1- and T2-weighted SE images, GE images, as well as coronal 3D MRA in breath-hold technique. The percentage of tumor enhancement was determined by measuring regions of interest before and after Gd-DTPA administration on the 2D multiplanar spoiled GRE images. RESULTS: All four masses showed some contrast enhancement on the dynamically acquired GRE images. The degree of contrast enhancement correlated with the degree of tumor differentiation, content of myxoid matrix, and associated thrombus. Contrast-enhanced 3D MRA was useful for preoperative delineation of the peripheral pulmonary arteries to the subsegmental order. CONCLUSION: Dynamic contrast-enhanced 3D MRA of the pulmonary arteries can be used to delineate pulmonary arterial angiosarcomas preoperatively. Considerable variability of contrast agent uptake reflects the wide histologic behavior of these masses in differentiation from central pulmonary embolism.

Fatality risk for belted drivers versus car mass.

This study was performed to determine how the likelihood of a belted driver being killed in a single car crash depends on the mass of the car. This was done by applying the pedestrian fatality exposure approach to the subset of fatalities in the Fatal Accident Reporting System (FARS) for which the driver was coded as using a shoulder belt and/or a lap belt. Combining the 1975 through 1982 data provided a sufficiently large population of belted drivers to perform the analysis. In the exposure approach used, the number of car drivers killed in single car crashes is divided by the number of nonoccupant fatalities (pedestrians or motorcyclists) associated with the same group of cars. The ratio is interpreted to reflect the physical effect of car mass, essentially independent of driver behavior effects. In the present application, car mass effects for belted drivers were determined by considering the number of belted drivers killed divided by the number of nonoccupants killed in crashes involving cars whose drivers were coded in the FARS files as being belted. Because the belt use of surviving drivers is, to some extent, self-reported, it is considered that the data given in the report should be not used to estimate the effectiveness of seat belts in preventing fatalities. The results are presented as graphical and analytical comparisons of fatality likelihood versus car mass for belted and unbelted drivers. It is concluded that the effect of car mass on relative driver fatality likelihood is essentially the same for belted and unbelted drivers (for example, the present analysis gives that a belted driver in a 900 kg car is 2.3 times as likely to be killed in a single car crash as is the belted driver in an 1800 kg car. The corresponding ratio determined here for unbelted drivers is 2.4). As a consequence of this conclusion, the relative effectiveness of seat belts in preventing driver fatalities is similar for cars of different masses.
