A curriculum vitae that gives you a competitive edge.

All nurses with advancing careers should maintain a current curriculum vitae (CV) to chronicle professional accomplishments. Whatever the work setting, a CV can showcase skills and achievements. It is used when applying for a new position, but also within one's current situation to inform other professionals of specific interests and abilities. This article reviews nursing literature regarding preparation of a CV and suggests a format for the advanced practice nurse to use when writing a CV.

AIDS in women: epidemiology.

Several facts concerning the distribution of AIDS in U.S. female populations are clear. This disease has made significant inroads, in a quantitative sense, into the female segment of our society as documented by AIDS surveillance data, information on pregnant women and parturients, and by screening data from the military. The impact on women in the reproductive years, on the reproductive health of these women, and on the reproductive outcome of their pregnancies is of substantial concern. Monitoring epidemiologic trends in certain groups will require clever and creative strategies like those of Hoff and colleagues. Additional data may be derived from the CDC's Family of Surveys that will examine HIV prevalence in five groups (in addition to the newborn infant survey described above): intravenous drug users, patients admitted to hospitals, sexually transmitted disease clinic patients, women's health and reproductive health clinics, and tuberculosis clinics. It is hoped that the data obtained from these studies, as well as data gathered on college students and Job Corps applicants, will contribute additional information on HIV infection in women. Monitoring the progress of the AIDS epidemic in women will be difficult. Even more difficult will be the effort to respond to the epidemic in the women it most frequently affects: the poor, minority, disenfranchised women who may be involved in illegal activities (drug use, prostitution, illegal immigration) who are not well networked into the medical and social services of our society.

Employment selection in health care: the case for structured interviewing.

The literature related to selection interviewing dates, at least, to 1915. The focus of that literature and the conclusions represented by the various authors assumed that the employment selection interview had limited validity or predictive value until the late 1980s. Papers appearing since contradict those conclusions. This article proposes that the selection interview can be a valid portion of the hiring process to the degree that each is highly structured.

Developing a computerized information system for visually disabled people to assist with job placement.

Unlike several other countries, the UK does not have a national occupational database describing jobs in terms of skill and other factors. Neither is there a nationally recognized method for assessing the functional skills which job seekers have to offer. If these two types of assessment were based on the same criteria, individuals could accurately match their profile to occupations or vacancies. Assistance with job placement is one of the most popular services offered by Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) Employment Network to visually disabled people. Yet resources are stretched and the Network is considering computerizing its occupational information and job-matching activity to increase efficiency. By drawing upon a comparison of existing systems and recommendations in the literature this paper offers suggestions for the development of this system. Factors for consideration at the design stage are discussed, and the paper concludes with a programme for development, evaluation and implementation. The need to ensure quality standards through staff training and appropriate procedures is stressed.

Making planned and unplanned role transitions.

Changes in organizations mean planned and unplanned role transitions for nurse administrators and managers. Keeping abreast of trends engaging in activities that promote professional growth, assessing work habits, maintaining job interviewing skills, and reviewing and updating resumes are essential to prepare for role changes. When unplanned changes occur because one is fired or a position is abolished, one has to organize personal needs, cope with the job loss, look for a job, and assume a new role. The authors discuss strategies that can be used personally or with others to facilitate job change.
