Immunodeficiency in Hodgkin disease.

The immunodeficiency in Hodgkin disease is characterized by a defect in cell-mediated immunity. Recent studies have reported that delayed hypersensitivity responses (DHR) are normal in untreated patients with early disease. The present study evaluated the DHR of 218 untreated patients using 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene and a battery of intradermal antigens. The results confirm an immune deficiency in early stages which is not an all-or-none phenomenon and may be unmasked by using lower concentrations of antigens.

[Acute pulmonary histoplasmosis in a Spanish traveller to Nicaragua: an imported disease case].

Pulmonary histoplasmosis is a rare disease in Spain. Moreover, it is difficult to diagnose due to unspecific clinical and radiological symptoms. The isolation of the fungus is essential for a proper diagnosis. Nevertheless, it is very difficult to identify the fungus itself in respiratory stains and we usually need invasive techniques. For all these reasons and taking into account the increase in journeys and immigration, we believe that it is probably underdiagnosed in our country. We report a case of acute pulmonary histoplasmosis in a Spanish traveller and emphasize the importance of the anamnesis and the value of the microbiologist's experience to obtain the diagnosis.

[Prevalence of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis infection in Panamanian children. Preliminary report].

The prevalence of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis infection in Panamanian children was demonstrated to be 12.73% (14/110) by skin reactivity to 50 micrograms of yeast derived antigen. Boys were infected more frequently than girls - 1.45:1. The earliest age of infection was 2 years, and a direct relationship was noted between age and frequency of infections (as the children became older, more of them became infected); boys more so than girls. Thirteen of 14 (93%) of the infected juvenile population live in a rural environment.

[Immunology of histoplasmosis: isolation of a polysaccharide-protein complex with immuno-specific activity from Histoplasma capsulatum].

A polysaccharide protein complex (PPC) with a high specificity in immunodiffusion in gel (IDG) was isolated from a Histoplasma capsulatum strain. Although unaffected by proteolytic enzymes (pronase) and heat, the PPC antigen activity was destroyed by beta-glucosidase. These results suggest that the specificity of the PPC antigen might be located in the polysaccharide fraction. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of the PPC antigen gave only one brand detected by Schiff's reagent (PAS).
