Recreating the scene: an effective way to provide delayed punishment for inappropriate motor behavior.

A mediated punishment procedure that involved recreating a behavioral sequence by guiding the subject through the behavior in the situation in which it occurred was used to suppress several severe problem behaviors in two developmentally delayed children. The mediational procedure was first used with a 4-year-old autistic boy for biting and then for foot stomping. Next the procedure was used for stealing and hoarding behavior with a multiply handicapped 17-year-old girl. Results indicated that the procedure was effective and produced relatively rapid results. One advantage of the procedure is that it provides an opportunity for trained personnel to apply restrictive procedures to low frequency behavior that occurs in their absence rather than relying on less qualified staff to implement the procedure immediately after the behavior occurs.

Combining noncontingent reinforcement and differential reinforcement schedules as treatment for aberrant behavior.

Research has shown that noncontingent reinforcement (NCR) can be an effective behavior-reduction procedure when based on a functional analysis. The effects of NCR may be a result of elimination of the contingency between aberrant behavior and reinforcing consequences (extinction) or frequent and free access to reinforcers that may reduce the participant's motivation to engage in aberrant behaviors or mands. If motivation is momentarily reduced, behavior such as mands may not be sensitive to positive reinforcement. In this study, for 3 children with aberrant behavior maintained by tangible positive reinforcement, differential-reinforcement-of-alternative-behavior schedules were superimposed on NCR schedules to determine if mands could be strengthened. Results for the participants indicated that NCR did not preclude reinforcement of mands.

[Child and adolescents with psychotic disorders. A literature review of psychology and course].

The article is a literature review of psychosis in children and adolescents. Earlier studies point to psychosis in children and adolescence being of the same types as the ones seen in adults. Schizophrenia has an early onset in boys, there are more premorbid dysfunctions, a gradual onset of disease, a number of unspecific symptoms and a poorer prognosis than for adults. For the children with bipolar affective disorder the prognosis is similar to that of adults, and it is better than for the schizophrenics. The relationships between developmental disorders and schizophrenia, and between hyperactivity syndromes and manic-depressive disorders need to be further clarified, as does the validity of the follow-up investigations.

Effects of task difficulty on parent teaching skills and behavior problems of young children with autism.

Responses of 15 young children with autism and their mothers were analyzed as these families proceeded through a program of skill training and family support. The influence of task difficulty on the children's behavior problems and on the mother's teaching skills was evaluated at three distinct points over a one-year period. Results showed that (a) behavior problems were significantly reduced and teaching skills were significantly improved over the course of training and (b) the difficulty of the task was related to behavior problems and teaching skills. Findings were discussed in relation to implications for assessment and intervention with young children who have autism.

[Psychological effects of military low altitude flight practice on children].

In a 2-step epidemiological study child psychiatric disorders, psychophysiological reactions and psychosocial stressors of 376 children aged 4 to 16 were recorded in two regions of Westphalia (West-Germany) with different frequencies of military low-level flights. No essential impairment of the children's health was found. However, below a clinical level we noticed significantly higher anxiety syndromescores (and to some extent of depression syndromescores) and a tendency towards higher psychophysiological arousal in the high-noise area along with no differences in psychosocial stressors. Implications of these results and aspects of child-psychiatric assessment instruments' use are discussed.

[On pre-requirements to the use of audio-visual techniques in deviant children. Thoughts from the psychoanalytical treatment of a thirteen months aged child (author's transl)].

This paper deals with the analytical cure of a child between 13 and 21 months and hospitalized since birth. In a first phase, one can see the start of a relationship, then the objectal relationship to primary objects: on the one hand the object food and on the other hand the therapist within the transfert. These two objects, impossible in the reality dimension from the start, are progressively characterized by "neantisation", which can reach symbolic tone. A scene in front of the picture of a child on knees of a nurse progressively introduces Nadia to the third register: the imagery one. Her behaviour is exemplary during the 17 scences on the mirror, during which she can progressively assume the image of her unified body under the view of the other, in demonstrating that she can only do it by symbolizing primary objects, in particular "to drink nothing". The symbolisation acquired at the oral level permits to verbalise on the same mode her relationship to the anal object, i.e. on the non destructive symbolic mode. This treatment raises the question of the use of audio-visual techniques for psychotic and autistic subjects, and recuses the pedagogic use of image for such subjects, taking into account the primary importance of symbolic function on imagery function demonstrated in this paper. This is a prerequisite for any research in the field of audiovisual techniques with psychotics.

Long-term outcome for children with autism who received early intensive behavioral treatment.

After a very intensive behavioral intervention, an experimental group of 19 preschool-age children with autism achieved less restrictive school placements and higher IQs than did a control group of 19 similar children by age (Lovaas, 1987). The present study followed-up this finding by assessing subjects at a mean age of 11.5 years. Results showed that the experimental group preserved its gains over the control group. The 9 experimental subjects who had achieved the best outcomes at age 7 received particularly extensive evaluations indicating that 8 of them were indistinguishable from average children on tests of intelligence and adaptive behavior. Thus, behavioral treatment may produce long-lasting and significant gains for many young children with autism.
