Rapid and effective labeling of brain tissue using TAT-conjugated CdS:Mn/ZnS quantum dots.

TAT (a cell penetrating peptide)-conjugated CdSratioMn/ZnS quantum dots (Qdots), intra-arterially delivered to a rat brain, rapidly (within a few minutes) labeled the brain tissue without manipulating the blood-brain-barrier (BBB). Qdot loading was sufficiently high that it allowed a gross fluorescent visualization of the whole rat brain using a low power hand-held UV lamp. Histological data clearly showed that TAT-conjugated Qdots migrated beyond the endothelial cell line and reached the brain parenchyma. Qdots without TAT did not label the brain tissue confirming the fact that TAT peptide was necessary to overcome the BBB. The present study clearly demonstrated the possibility of delivering a large amount of Qdot-based imaging agents to the brain tissue.

Nucleotide passivated cadmium sulfide quantum dots.

Semiconductor quantum dots are finding numerous applications in biological systems; in this paper, we report the simple in situ preparation of nucleotide capped cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanoparticles and investigate the interaction of the capping agent with the nanoparticle surface.

Alternating droplet generation and controlled dynamic droplet fusion in microfluidic device for CdS nanoparticle synthesis.

A multifunctional and high-efficiency microfluidic device for droplet generation and fusion is presented. Through unique design of the micro-channels, the device is able to alternately generate droplets, generating droplet ratios ranging from 1 ratio 5 to 5 ratio 1, and fuse droplets, enabling precise chemical reactions in several picoliters on a single chip. The controlled fusion is managed by passive control based on the channel geometry and liquid phase flow. The synthesis of CdS nanoparticles utilizing each fused droplet as a microreactor for rapid and efficient mixing of reagents is demonstrated in this paper. Following alternating droplet generation, the channel geometry allows the exclusive fusion of alternate droplets with concomitant rapid mixing and produces supersaturated solution of Cd2+ and S2- ions to form CdS nanoparticles in each fused droplet. The spectroscopic properties of the CdS nanoparticles produced by this method are compared with CdS prepared by bulk mixing.

Group 12 metal monoselenocarboxylates: synthesis, characterization, structure and their transformation to metal selenide (MSe; M = Zn, Cd, Hg) nanoparticles.

Reactions of [MCl2(tmeda)] with potassium salts of monoselenocarboxylic acids gave complexes of the general formula [M(SeCOR)2(tmeda)] (M = Zn, Cd; R = Ph, Tol; Tol = C6H4-p-CH3; tmeda = Me2NCH2CH2NMe2). The analogous mercury complexes were unstable at room temperature and afforded HgSe nanoparticles during the course of reaction. All the complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV-vis, NMR (1H, 13C, 77Se, 113Cd) data. The X-ray structural analysis of [Cd(SeCOPh)2(tmeda)] revealed that the complex is a discrete monomer having an approximate tetrahedral coordination environment around the central metal atom with monodentate (Se-bonded) selenocarboxylates. Thermal behavior of these complexes was studied by TG analysis. Pyrolysis in a furnace or in HDA (hexadecylamine) gave MSe nanoparticles, which were characterized by XRD, EDAX, SEM and absorption spectroscopy.

Improved efficiency of photovoltaics based on CdSe nanorods and poly(3-hexylthiophene) nanofibers.

We present photovoltaic devices based on a blend of the conjugated polymer poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) with cadmium selenide nanorods, where the solvent for film deposition has been carefully chosen to optimize the film morphology. Using 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene (TCB), which has a high boiling point, as solvent for P3HT it is possible to obtain a fibrilar morphology, providing extended pathways for hole transport. Blend devices fabricated using this solvent gave solar power conversion efficiencies of 2.6%. This indicates that efficient transport of electrons and holes is achieved in these films, allowing them to operate effectively at solar illumination intensities.

Homeopathic treatment of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: three case studies using Jan Scholten's methodology.

This paper explores the treatment of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome following a viral infection in young people. The methodology is based on that of Dr Jan Scholten, Holland, who has systematically described the homeopathic themes of all elements in the periodic table. Three case studies are presented, Cobaltum Phosphoricum, Calcium Phosphoricum and Cadmium Phosphoricum were prescribed. The common themes and the differentiating features of these Phosphate salts are described in detail to show how the homeopathic similimum is found and cure achieved.
