Participation of RNA synthesis in the process of the development and maintenance of conditioned reflexes (an investigation using antitheines).

It has been established that an increase in RNA synthesis in the neurons of the cerebral cortex of rats at the stage of consolidation is manifested in well-trained animals more strongly than in poorly trained animals. The selective influence of propylnorantitheine and demethylated derivatives of ethylnorantitheine on the maintenance of conditioned reflexes has been demonstrated. The effects of these substances on consolidation and long-term memory correlate with the change in the RNA-synthesizing activity of neurons during the effect both in systemic experiments and with the direct interaction with the chromatin of the neurons. The participation of the RNA synthesis of cerebral cortical neurons in the mechanisms of long-term memory is discussed.

Conditioned-reflex facilitation in young and older adults.

Young (18-30 years) and elderly (63-88 years) human subjects received 70 trials of single-cue classical eyeblink conditioning (paired group), or 70 explicitly unpaired presentations of the tone conditioned stimulus (CS) and airpuff unconditioned stimulus (unpaired group). Before and after conditioning, reflex-eliciting white noise and corneal airpuff stimuli were presented alone or paired with the CS to investigate the effects of conditioning on eyeblink reflex amplitude. The results showed increased conditioned responses in the paired group compared to the unpaired group for the young but not the elderly subjects. There was, however, evidence of conditioned facilitation of noise-elicited reflexes in both young and elderly subjects. These data indicate that conditioned facilitation of the startle reflex may be a sensitive indicator of classical conditioning processes in human subjects.

[Effect of an electromagnetic field on conditioned reflex maintenance and the nucleic acid content of brain tissues during carotid artery constriction].

It has been discovered in chronic experiments on 54 rats that during ligation of the carotid artery, the action of the decimetric electromagnetic field (DMB-irradiation) produces in some cases the deterioration of the rats' status that manifests in paroxysms eventuating in lethal outcomes, whereas in other ones, makes the conditioned reflexes return to normal, accompanied by an increase in RNA content in the cortex of the large hemispheres. The mechanisms of an inconclusive action of DMB-irradiation is discussed as is the importance of changes in RNA content in the cortex for the mechanisms of a favourable action of irradiation on the recovery of brain function in circulatory disorders. The possibilities of using DMB-irradiation under the clinical conditions are also discussed.

[The effect of a peptide-containing extract of the right hemispheric cortex on the recovery of conditioned reflex activity and on the level of neuromediators in the brain structures of rats after a unilateral frontal lobectomy].

Experiments were conducted on 97 non-inbred [correction of unbred] male rats to study the effect of a peptide-containing extract of the cortex of the right hemisphere of donor rats, who underwent left lobectomy 9 days before the experiment, on restoration of conditioned reflexes of bilateral avoidance and level of neuromediators in the brain structures of recipient rats with a similar damage to the cerebral cortex. It is shown that the brain extract from the right hemisphere of operated on donors has a much higher effect on the restoration of reflexes. At the same time it was found that in left frontal lobectomy this extract produces a most manifest effect on monoamine metabolism in the structures of the right intact hemisphere. It is suggested that a directed effect may possibly be produced on the development of compensatory-restorative process in the central nervous system by endogenous substances of peptide origin which are isolated from brain structures actively contributing to the restoration of disturbed functions.

Cortical multineuronal activity in dogs with defensive instrumental conditioned reflex.

For the first time in dogs with semi-microelectrodes chronically implanted in the motor and somatosensory region of the cortex, background multineuronal activity (MNA) was recorded over the long term followed by an amplitudinal discrimination from the MNA of impulse series presumably belonging to cells of large, medium, and small size was performed. The presence of close synergistic functional connections, particularly significant during the avoidance conditioned reflex and its extinction, was established by determining the correlation coefficient (CC) between the impulse flows of these neurons. In trained animals the highest CC values were observed between neurons with a small and medium spike amplitude. The network properties of identified neurons were studied by constructing histograms of cross interval relationships. The connections established were of primarily a unilateral, excitatory character.

[Conditioned reflex activity in rats after chronic antenatal gamma irradiation in association with mercazolyl].

The purpose of investigation is the study of combined influence of gamma-radiation (137Cs, 1.25 Gy during 20 days) and mercazolyl (20 mg/100 ml drinkable water) in utero on the intellectual state of rats in the postnatal ontogenesis. It was shown, that antenatal separate influence both of gamma-radiation and mercazolyl induced the delay of intellectual development in 2 and 7 months age. The combined influence of these factors induced essential increase observed effect. There is a party of the conditioned reflex activity in 7 month age.
