Signal detection via residence-time asymmetry in noisy bistable devices.

We introduce a dynamical readout description for a wide class of nonlinear dynamic sensors operating in a noisy environment. The presence of weak unknown signals is assessed via the monitoring of the residence time in the metastable attractors of the system, in the presence of a known, usually time-periodic, bias signal. This operational scenario can mitigate the effects of sensor noise, providing a greatly simplified readout scheme, as well as significantly reduced processing procedures. Such devices can also show a wide variety of interesting dynamical features. This scheme for quantifying the response of a nonlinear dynamic device has been implemented in experiments involving a simple laboratory version of a fluxgate magnetometer. We present the results of the experiments and demonstrate that they match the theoretical predictions reasonably well.

Stochastic resonance on two-dimensional arrays of bistable oscillators in a nonlinear optical system.

We describe an experimental realization of stochastic resonance in two-dimensional arrays of coupled nonlinear oscillators. The experiment is implemented using an optoelectronic system composed of a liquid crystal light valve in a feedback loop with external, spatially variable noise being added through a liquid crystal display. The behavior of the system differs from previously studied uniform arrays, showing a high signal-to-noise ratio at the output for a broad range of input noise. We show that this behavior is qualitatively the same as that exhibited by computer models where the nonlinear elements of the array have a distribution of biases applied to their switching thresholds.

Coupling-induced oscillations in overdamped bistable systems.

It is well known that overdamped and unforced dynamical systems do not oscillate. However, well-designed coupling schemes, together with the appropriate choice of initial conditions, can induce oscillations when a control parameter exceeds a threshold value. We demonstrate this effect in a specific system, a soft-potential mean-field description of the dynamics in a (hysteretic) single-domain ferromagnetic sample. Using a specific (unidirectional, with cyclic boundary conditions) coupling scheme, together with nonidentical initial conditions, one can cause the coupled system of N elements (N odd) to oscillate when the coupling coefficient is swept through a critical value. The ensuing oscillations could find utility in the detection of very weak "target" signals, via their effect on the oscillation characteristics.

Inducing coherence in networks of bistable maps by varying the interaction range.

Ordinarily, two different topologies have been used to model spatiotemporal chaos and to study complexity in networks of maps: one where sites interact only with nearest neighbors (e.g., the standard diffusive coupling) and one where sites interact with all sites in the network (global coupling). Here we investigate intermediate regimes considering the interaction range as a free tunable parameter. The synchronization behavior normally seen in globally coupled maps is found to set in for interaction ranges considerably smaller than the system size. In addition, we analytically derive stability conditions for the onset of coherent states (full synchronization) from which the minimum interaction range needed to induce coherence in homogeneously coupled maps can be determined. Such conditions are also obtained for inhomogeneous situations when the coupling strength decreases linearly with the distance. The characteristic range for the onset of coherence is studied in detail as a function of model parameters.

Emergent oscillations in unidirectionally coupled overdamped bistable systems.

It is well known that overdamped unforced dynamical systems do not oscillate. However, well-designed coupling schemes, together with the appropriate choice of initial conditions, can induce oscillations when a control parameter exceeds a threshold value. In a recent publication [Phys. Rev. E 68, 045102 (2003)]], we demonstrated this behavior in a specific prototype system, a soft-potential mean-field description of the dynamics in a hysteretic "single-domain" ferromagnetic sample. The previous analysis of this work showed that N (odd) unidirectionally coupled elements with cyclic boundary conditions would, in fact, oscillate when a control parameter-in this case the coupling strength-exceeded a critical value. These oscillations are now finding utility in the detection of very weak "target" signals, via their effect on the oscillation characteristics, e.g., the frequency and asymmetry of the oscillation wave forms. In this paper we explore the underlying dynamics of this system. Scaling laws that govern the oscillation frequency in the vicinity of the critical point, as well as the zero-crossing intervals in the presence of a symmetry-breaking target dc signal, are derived; these quantities are germane to signal detection and analysis.

Asymmetric probability densities in symmetrically modulated bistable devices.

A Brownian particle hopping in a symmetric double-well potential can be statistically confined into a single well by the simultaneous action of (a) two periodic input signals, one tilting the minima and the other one modulating the barrier height, and (b) an additive and a purely multiplicative random signal, generated by a unique source and thus preserving a certain degree of statistical correlation. The underlying gating mechanism is quite robust when compared, for instance, with biharmonic rocking. In view of technological implementation, asymmetric confinement through gating can be conveniently maximized by tuning the input signal parameters (correlation time, phase-time lag, amplitudes), thus revealing a resonant localization mechanism of general applicability.

Complex dynamics in unidirectionally coupled overdamped bistable systems subject to a time-periodic external signal.

Recently, we have studied the emergence of oscillatory behavior in overdamped undriven nonlinear dynamic systems subject to carefully crafted coupling schemes and operating conditions [V. In, Phys. Rev. E 68, 045102(R) (2003).] The theoretical ideas have been validated in an experimental setup of N = 3 coupled ferromagnetic cores subject to a dc external magnetic "target" signal; the oscillations (corresponding to the periodic switching of each core between its stable steady states of magnetization) are triggered when the coupling constant crosses a threshold value, with the oscillation frequency exhibiting a characteristic scaling behavior with the "separation" of the coupling constant from its threshold value, as well as with the external signal amplitude. Here, we consider the system response to a time-periodic signal. We demonstrate experimentally that, depending on the signal amplitude and frequency, the response can be either synchronized to the signal frequency or to one-third this frequency. These phenomena afford unique techniques for time-periodic signal detection and characterization for a large class of sensors.
