Thorotrast induced hepatic cholangiocarcinoma and angiosarcoma.

A 49 year old woman developed hepatic cholangiocarcinoma and angiosarcoma 22 years after the administration of Thorotrast. The etiologic association between Thorotrast and a variety of malignant hepatic neoplasms is well known, but the simultaneous occurrence of two different hepatic neoplasms has not been previously reported.

Multiple, unique, and common p53 mutations in a thorotrast recipient with four primary cancers.

Four primary cancers found at autopsy of a patient who received the thorium-based contrast agent Thorotrast 50 years ago and who was healthy up until a few months before his death from liver failure were analyzed for p53 mutations. The data suggest that the chronic alpha-irradiation may be a large causative factor. Multiple mutations were found in all the cancer tissues: two foci of a cholangiocellular carcinoma, a tubular adenocarcinoma of the stomach, a squamous cell carcinoma of the lung, and an adenocarcinoma of Vater's ampulla. The total number of point mutations detected were 13. Moreover, homozygous aberrations were detected in a large area of normal small intestine and noncancer liver tissues suggesting that nontumor cells which harbored p53 abnormalities gained a survival advantage and clonally expanded.

Hepatoma after thorotrast. Morphological and autoradiographic data.

Two women, respectively given thorotrast 30 and 40 years ago, died of hepatoma. The spleen and liver of one and the liver of the other were studied by morphological, macro- and micro-autoradiographic methods. The part played by thorotrast in the neoplasic process and its effect on the mechanism of tumour induction are discussed.

Rapid non-destructive quantitative estimation of urania/thoria in mixed thorium uranium di-oxide pellets by high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry.

A non-destructive technique using high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry has been standardised for quantitative estimation of uranium/thorium in mixed (ThO2-UO2) fuel pellets of varying composition. Four gamma energies were selected; two each from the uranium and thorium series and the time of counting has been optimised. This technique can be used for rapid estimation of U/Th percentage in a large number of mixed fuel pellets from a production campaign.

EPR g factors of trigonal Dy(3+) center in ThO(2) crystal.

The perturbation formulas of EPR g factors g(parallel) and g( perpendicular ) for the lowest Kramers doublet of 6H(15/2) of a 4f(9) ion in trigonal symmetry are established in this paper. In these formulas, besides the contribution due to the interaction within the lowest 6H(15/2) manifolds considered in the previous papers, the contributions due to the J-mixing among the 6H(15/2), 6H(13/2) (first excited state) and 6H(11/2) (second excited state) via crystal-field interaction, the admixtures among the states with the same J value via spin-orbit coupling interaction and those between the lowest Kramers doublet Gammagamma and other Kramers doublets Gamma(X) within the states 6H(J) (J=15/2,13/2,11/2) via crystal-field and orbital angular momentum interactions are included. From these formulas, the g factors g(parallel) and g( perpendicular ) for the trigonal Dy(3+) center in ThO(2) crystal are calculated. The results are discussed.

Thorotrast granuloma--a renascence.

A case of cervical thorotrast granuloma and its surgical complications is presented. The properties and usage of thorotrast and its later complications are described, and the management of the complications is discussed. It is emphasized that there is usually a long latent period between thorotrast exposure and the advent of complications and perhaps more cases of similar difficulty may be anticipated in the future.
