CONDENSED TANNINS. OPTICALLY ACTIVE DIASTEREOISOMERS OF (+)-MOLLISACACIDIN BY EPIMERIZATION.

1. (+)-Mollisacacidin [(+)-3',4',7-trihydroxy-2,3-trans-flavan-3,4-trans- diol] is converted by autoclaving into the optically active free phenolic 2,3-trans-3-4-cis (12% yield), 2,3-cis-3,4-trans (11%) and 2,3-cis-3,4-cis (2.8%) diastereoisomers through epimerization at C-2 and C-4. 2. The relative configurations of the epimeric forms were determined by nuclear-magnetic-resonance spectrometry and paper ionophoresis in comparison with synthetic reference compounds, and was confirmed by chemical interconversions. 3. From this a scheme of epimerization is inferred and their absolute configurations are assigned as (2R:3S:4S), (2S:3S:4R) and (2S:3S:4S) respectively from the known absolute configuration (2R:3S:4R) of (+)-mollisacacidin.

Chemical studies of proanthocyanidins and hydrolyzable tannins.

We investigated a number of natural polyphenols representing flavan-3-ols, gallotannins, and ellagitannins with regard to their antioxidant potential. For this purpose we used pulse radiolysis to determine scavenging rate constants with hydroxyl radicals and decay rates of the respective aroxyl radicals and EPR spectroscopy to identify the radicals after in situ oxidation. Using NMR spectroscopy, we could confirm phenolic coupling reactions of epigallocatechin gallate and pentagalloyl glucose after radical-induced oxidation.

Tannins and related compounds. CXXII. New dimeric, trimeric and tetrameric ellagitannins, lambertianins A-D, from Rubus lambertianus Seringe.

Chemical examination of the leaves of Rubus lambertianus Seringe (Rosaceae) has led to the isolation of four new ellagitannins, which were characterized on the basis of chemical and spectroscopic evidence to be dimers [lambertianins A (6) and B (7)], a trimer [lambertianin C (8)] and a tetramer [lambertianin D (10)], all having sanguisorbic acid ester group(s) as linking unit(s) between glucopyranose moieties. Furthermore, HPLC analyses of fifteen Rubus species collected in Japan and Taiwan revealed that the trimer (8) and the tetramer (10), together with sanguiin H-6 (1), occur widely in these species.

[Traveler's diarrhea in Turkey. Prospective randomized therapeutic comparison of charcoal versus tannin albuminate/ethacridine lactate].

In most cases traveler's diarrhea is a self-limiting disease not requiring professional assistance. As data on self-treatment are very limited, a prospective randomized trial was performed in 620 German tourists spending a two week-holiday in Turkey. 31.6% of these travelers developed diarrhea and 186 were assigned to two treatment groups, receiving either medical coal or a combination of tannalbuminate and ethacridinlactate (TA/EL). In the TA/EL group stool frequencies significantly earlier returned to normal and complaints of moderate to severe abdominal pain were recorded less frequently (50 vs. 82.2%) than in patients receiving charcoal preparations. Both medications were well tolerated and TA/EL appeared more efficient for self medication of uncomplicated traveler's diarrhea.
