[Clinical study of the therapeutic effect of Mefoxine].

The therapeutic efficacy of cefoxitin was studied in 15 patients with pulmonary or urinary infections, after other unsuccessful antibiotic treatment. The drug determined a total regression of clinical picture within 10 days of therapy. Our results show that brief periods of treatment are sufficient in order to obtain recovery and to avoid selection of resistant germs. Patients treated with cefoxitin did not present any intolerance. The conclusion is drawn that "Mefoxin" is useful in patients affected by infections resistant to common antibiotics.

[Morphologic substrate in bacterial urinary tract infections (author's transl)].

Bacterial urinary tract infections can lead to acute or chronic, nonspecific or specific lesions of the kidney, renal pelvis, ureter, urinary bladder, and urethra. The inflammatory process may be limited to the kidney and/or to segments of the urinary tract. The most important and frequent pathoanatomic alterations were defined; the microscopic findings were described and supplemented with selected macroscopic and pathogenetic aspects. Juvenile bacterial interstitial nephritis was differentiated from adult bacterial interstitial nephritis on the basis of age-dependent anatomic conditions.

[Properties of 5 H2-S-positive strains of "Escherichia coli" (author's transl)].

Some properties of 5 H2S+ strains of E. coli (labeled EC1-EC5, of which 4 isolated from the feces of subjects with gastroenteritis and 1 from a patients with cystopyelitis) has been studied. Of these, two resulted to belong to the O140 and one to the O127 serological groups; other 2 strains were found to react respectively with two (O84 and O108) and three (O65, O70 and O71) E. coli antisera. H2S- segregants were spontaneously obtained from 3 of these strans, but with different frequency: it was very low in EC5 (1.4%) and especially in EC3 (0.2%) strains, but appeared higher in EC4 (39.3%) strain. Clones from EC4 strain were also raffinose-negative; 11 of 12 obtained from EC5 strain (resistant to tetracycline) appeared sensible to tetracycline. Only one strain (EC4) has been able to transfer the H2S+ character with 4.7% frequency; another strain (EC5) transferred tetracycline-resistance character, but with lower frequency. Raffinose-positive character has never been transferred.

[Laurence-Moon-Bardet-Biedl syndrome and endometrial carcinoma].

Report on a classical Laurence-Moon-Bardet-Biedl-syndrome (LMBB-Syndrome). After a 9 (to 10) year-period of irregular bleedings caused by proved monophasic menstrual cycles and Stein-Leventhal-syndrome an endometrial adenocarcinoma arose in the 23 old patient. The possible carcinogenesis by virtue of an extraglandular oestrogen-(oestron-) production is discussed. The frequently observed nephropathy is often a decisive factor in morbidity and letyality of the LMBB-syndrome.

[Cystic pyeloureteritis. Presentation of 10 cases].

Based on the analysis of 10 cases of cystic pyeloureteritis, a rare entity of benign outcome, the authors suggest that the cysts might be the result of an hyperreactivity of the urothelium to an aggression, and feel that the correction of the etiologic factors might prevent the evolution of Von Brunn's nests.

Pyeloureteritis cystica.

Recent personal observations of patients with the diagnosis of pyeloureteritis cystica, combined with the study of the literature with a view to describing the pathogenesis and radiological appearance of this entity.

[Differential diagnosis of pyeloureteritis cystica, follicularis et granularis].

At the instance of the observations of two patients the differential-diagnostic difficulties in the pyeloureteritis cystica and the ureteritis follicularis or granularis are described. Here first of all the following other diseases must be excluded: 1. neoformations in the upper urinary tract, 2. uro-tuberculosis, 3. X-ray-negative calculi, 4. HWI with gas-producing germs. The knowledge of the X-ray diagnostic criteria of the individual diseases is often of life-important significance for making a certain diagnosis for the patient. For this reason also the performance of a retrograde ureteropyelogramme may be indicated, if, exhausting all possibilities of the excretion urography, a diagnostic ascertainment is not possible.

[Upper urinary tract filling defects (author's transl)].

The distinctive features of true and false filling defects in the radio-opaque image of the upper urinary tract are discussed. The differential diagnosis of intrinsic intraluminal and parietal lacune is examined and several cases are presented by way of illustration.
