Migrant employment and the recession--the case of the Irish in Britain.

"The past decade has witnessed a substantial contraction in the size of the Irishborn community in Britain. This paper uses shift share analysis to assess the extent to which job losses amongst the Irish in Britain over the years 1971-1977 may have induced return migration to Ireland. The article concludes that such 'push' factors are likely to have been relatively weak in comparison to the 'pull' of an Irish economy considerably more buoyant than that of Britain."

The results of a 1981 survey of 302 Caribbean sugarcane cutters who were temporary immigrants in Florida are presented. The focus is on remittances to the islands of origin. Stable features and changing aspects of Italian migration abroad in recent years.

For decades the migratory phenomenon has been a constant feature in Italian economic development, and the numerous Italian communities, now well established in various foreign countries, are testimony to that historical dimension. Taking into account Italian statistical information, the author analyzes the main aspects of the Italian communities abroad and points out the stable features and changing aspects of the migratory streams in recent times. Concluding remarks deal with some measures that would be necessary to adopt in the future both towards the Italian communities abroad and in the field of the actual different types of migrants. As to data problems, even if Italian statistical information seems to indicate the basic trends, it fails to provide complete data regarding the actual size of the phenomenon. An international agreement seems to be the most pressing requisite at present for a harmonious flow of information based on a standard collection criteria.

Immigration and the earnings of youth in the U.S..

"This article reports findings that have emerged from an effort made at statistically measuring the effects of immigration on the earnings of U.S.-born youth. The presence of immigrants arriving before 1965 has a positive impact on youth earnings. Recently arrived immigrants impact negatively, however. These results are consistent with recent findings that the skill level of immigrants arriving within the last two decades is lower relative to that of immigrants arriving earlier. The results also show that the negative effects diminish as the youth ages, reflecting skill acquisition and job mobility of the young worker into jobs less vulnerable to competition from immigrant workers."

[Migration strategies and ethnic networks compared: the Burkina Faso and Senegalese groups in Italy].

"African immigration towards Italy is presented as part of the wider international context. The function of emigration networks is briefly examined. A comparison is made between the Burkinabe and Senegalese groups, the latter being the most important group from West Africa. The different ways of entering the labour market are studied according to the legal situation of migrants (whether regulars or clandestines), the Italian region of settlement, and above all according to the characteristics of the ethnic networks established by the two above-mentioned nationalities.... The article shows how the choice of individual or group integration strategies depends both on cultural factors of the society of origin and on the economic and social situation of the Italian region of settlement."
