Nondestructive evaluation by x-ray computed tomography of dialysate flow patterns in capillary dialyzers.

It is hard to evaluate dialysate flow patterns inside the fiber bundle of capillary dialyzers. The current study describes a novel determination of dialysate flow by x-ray computed tomography. The authors did steady and nonsteady state tracer experiments with adipiodone to observe the dialysate flow pattern in capillary dialyzers held vertically and horizontally. The hollow fibers were filled with paraffin to avoid permeation of adipiodone from the dialysate to blood compartment. In steady state tracer experiments, adipiodone solution (50 vol%) was injected into the dialysate compartment at a flow rate of 1.5 ml/min. Horizontal sectional dialysate flow patterns were observed every 2 cm from the point of the adipiodone injection. Adipiodone solution flowed along broken and twisted fiber bundles at dialysate flow rates ranging from 200 to 600 ml/min. In nonsteady state tracer experiments, dialysate was switched from pure water to adipiodone solution by solenoid-controlled valves after a steady state was reached, and adipiodone solution (2.4 vol%) was infused into the dialysate compartment for 30 sec at a flow rate of 500 ml/min. Vertical sectional dialysate flow patterns were observed every 2 sec after the start of adipiodone infusion. Values for dialysate flow velocity at the outer and inner regions of the fiber bundle were 3.5 and 0.6 cm/sec for the CA-170, and 1.4 and 0.7 cm/sec for the HF-200 capillary dialyzer, respectively. This study demonstrates the usefulness of x-ray computed tomography in visually and quantitatively determining dialysate flow patterns in capillary dialyzers.

[Phenobarbital--an inducer of bilignost excretion with the bile in rats].

It was found that a preliminary administration of phenobarbital to rats caused an increase of the rate of 125I-bilignost excretion in the bile by 46.6% but reduced its half-life in the blood by 48.3% and its excretion in the urine by 46.4%. Phenobarbital decreased the rate of 125I-bilignost absorption by the liver slices and increased the rate of release from them.

[Hepatobiliary scintigraphy in the diagnosis of gallstones in young people].

The article describes results of using dynamic hepatobiliary scintigraphy in 43 young patients with chronic calculous cholecystitis. High informative value of the method for diagnosis of morpho-functional changes in the organs of the hepatobiliary system is shown, hyperbilirubinemia included. More than in half of the patients alterations of the absorptive-excretory functions of the liver and motor function of the gallbladder were revealed. Their direct relationship with the duration of the disease and degree of the inflammatory process in the biliary tract is established.

[Comparison between isteropac and a new non-ionic contrast medium for hysterosalpingography (B-15000)].

The authors refer the results of a double blind hysterosalpingographic study with a traditional ionic contrast medium (Isteropac) and a new non-ionic one (B-15000). Both the contrast have provided good quality images, without significant intolerance. Moreover the new non-ionic contrast medium has shown an easier utero-tubal transit with a sensible reduction of the examination length and a better diagnostic result.

[Immediate effect of x-ray contrast media on thyroid hormone parameters].

Immediately after application of various contrast media a number of functional parameters of thyroid function were determined. Especially after application of Biliscopin which is strongly bound to plasma proteins, a significant rise of the free thyroid hormone fractions, a significant increase in the binding capacity of specific transport proteins and a decrease of the total concentration of thyroid hormones was noticed. It is therefore recommended that neither in the early phase within the first hour, nor in the late phase within 10 days after application of contrast media, blood for determination of parameters of thyroid function should be collected, since otherwise misleading results may be obtained.
