The effects of hypnotherapy on homosexuality.

Fifteen homosexuals were treated with hypnosis. The patients were selected from a general psychiatric practice and had a long history of confirmed homosexual behaviour and showed no evidence of organic or psychotic illness. The type of hypnotic induction attempted in all cases is described. In those where a satisfactory depth of hypnotic trance was achieved a change in sexual orientation was suggested to the patient. Before therapy, each patient was assessed using the Kinsey scale. Results were evaluated in terms of the patient's subsequent behaviour and his subjective feelings. Of the 15 patients, three showed no improvement, four showed a mild improvement and eight showed a marked improvement. There was a significant correlation between the depth of hypnosis achieved and the therapeutic outcome. Those patients who reached a deep level of hypnotic trance were most likely to show a marked improvement. There were no significant correlations with other factors such as degree of homosexuality as measured on the Kinsey scale and the patient's marital status.Treatment of homosexuals with hypnosis may produce more satisfactory results than those obtainable by other means. The best results are likely to be achieved in patients who are good hypnotic subjects.

Cytomegalovirus isolation from healthy homosexual men.

The acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) has focused renewed interest on cytomegalovirus (CMV) both as an infectious complication of the syndrome and as a potential etiologic agent in the pathogenesis of the immunosuppression. We studied 30 healthy homosexual men in New York City to determine the prevalence of virus excretion and its relationship to CMV-IgM antibodies and to T-lymphocyte subsets. Cytomegalovirus was detected in the urine and/or semen of 11 subjects. Eight of 11 CMV shedders were CMV-IgM positive, but CMV IgM was found in only one of 19 not shedding the virus. While homosexuals as a group had lower OKT4/OKT8 ratios (0.8 +/- 0.4, mean +/- SD) than heterosexual controls (1.8 +/- 0.4, mean +/- SD), there was no significant difference in ratios between homosexuals excreting virus and those not excreting virus. Cytomegalovirus excretion by homosexual men seems to be more prevalent than previously appreciated and may pose a significant risk for sexual transmission.

Significance of gastrointestinal cytomegalovirus infection in homosexual males.

Gastrointestinal cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection usually occurs in immunosuppressed patients and has recently been reported in patients with the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). Serological evidence of CMV infection and a variety of traumatic and infectious gastrointestinal disorders are known to occur in nonimmunosuppressed homosexual males. However, the significance of gastrointestinal CMV infection in nonimmunosuppressed homosexual males is not well known. Three unusual cases of gastrointestinal CMV infection in homosexual males are presented. Infection of a Kock pouch in one patient and an anal ulcer in another, occurred as part of a CMV mononucleosis syndrome. In the third patient, CMV was found in an acutely inflamed appendix. Although gastrointestinal CMV infection has been reported frequently in patients with AIDS, our patients showed no evidence of immunosuppression or AIDS 6 wk to 1 year later. Gastrointestinal CMV infection in homosexual males with gastrointestinal disease should not be considered indicative of AIDS.

Self, self-concept, identity, and homosexual identity: constructs in need of definition and differentiation.

This paper uses symbolic interactionist theory to develop a theoretical framework that relates, defines, and differentiates the terms self, self-concept, identity, and homosexual identity. It argues that it is useful to view self and identity as constructs consisting of analytically separate dimensions and components, and defines and specifies the dimensions and components contained within the constructs of self and identity. It then critically examines the way Cass (1983/1984) defines the terms self, self-concept, identity, and homosexual identity, and her idea of a "fully developed homosexual identity." It concludes by noting the implications an interactionist framework has for understanding the homosexual identity.

Gonorrhea in homosexual men.

Extragenital gonorrhea was seen in 65% of 54 cases of gonorrhea in 43 homosexual men attending a venereal diseases clinic between 1974 and 1977; in 21 cases the infection was extragenital only. This type of gonorrhea was often asymptomatic and was associated with a high rate of failure of initial treatment in 6 of the 50 cases in which the patient returned for follow-up assessment, and in 5 of the 6 the persistent infection was extragenital. Syphillis was seen concomitantly or had previously occurred in 6 of the 54 cases. Fifteen of 28 cases of primary, secondary or early latent syphilis seen in men during the same study period had occurred in homosexuals. Appropriate testing for extragenital gonorrhea and for syphilis is important in homosexual men who present for examination, and homosexuality with the possibility of extragenital gonorrhea should be considered in a man with syphilis of recent onset.

[The characteristics of diagnosing homosexuality in examining a special population contingent].

In social terms homosexuality is one of the most dangerous sexual perversions, for it is subject to a strong social disapproval, affects the personality core, leads to social disadaptation, growth of anxiety, development of neurotic and depressive states, suicidal inclination, is conducive to the spread of syphilis and AIDS, forms the basis for numerous crimes (violence, aggression, murder). Homosexuality virtually cannot be corrected and is carefully concealed. In single-sex groups (soldiers, students of military schools, convicts) the prevalence of homosexuality may be as high as 30 to 50%. The proposed complex method for the diagnosis of homosexuality in men has been developed on the basis of methods of sexology, anthropometry, verbal and nonverbal psychodiagnosis, multidimensional mathematical statistics. The method consists of several independent blocks representing different aspects of sexuality. It is conductive to a flexible and rapid solution of numerous practical problems from singling out a risk group in screening examinations to full expert evaluation of the sexual sphere with a resulting differential diagnosis.

Behavioral risk-reduction strategies to prevent HIV infection among homosexual men: a grounded theory approach.

To be able to design effective health education interventions for homosexual men, it is necessary to understand determinants of safe and unsafe sex from the perspective of those involved. In this qualitative study, therefore, an open approach was taken to allow for this perspective. Interviews were conducted with 50 randomly selected HIV-antibody negative participants in the Amsterdam Cohort Study. Detailed questions were asked about sexual interactions and behaviors with steady and nonsteady partners. Whether or not homosexual men consciously protected themselves from HIV infection and which strategy they adopted was found to depend on three major factors: 1) motivation and intention, 2) significance of anal sex, and 3) risk perception within specific relationships. From a theoretical perspective results indicate that, next to the centrality of individual motivation as postulated in both the Theory of Reasoned Action and the Theory of Planned Behavior, symbolic meaning inherent in sexual acts, as well as type of relationship are important determinants of protective sexual behaviors that have to be taken into account to understand adequately why homosexual men engage in safe or unsafe sex. Some strategies employed by homosexual men carry uncertainties that continue to put them at increased risk for HIV infection. Health education interventions can be designed to address these issues.

[Demonstration of cytomegalovirus (CMV) IgG and IgM in homosexuals and transsexuals using ELISA].

In this study, 27 sera which belong to 15 homosexuals and 12 transsexuals have been searched for CMV IgG and CMV IgM antibodies with ELISA. 25 transsexuals and homosexuals were within 18-30 age group and the other two transsexuals were 36 years old. 12 cases of transsexuals have been operated on vaginoplasty before this search. These cases have been given anamnesis with generally continuing sexual course after they were 12 years old. There weren't important clinical signs and symptoms in 27 cases which were searched for sexual identity and other reasons in Ankara University, Medicine Faculty of Forensic Medicine Department. In 24 cases of studying groups have been found CMV IgG positive (88.9%) and 6 cases have been found CMV IgM seropositive (22.2%). Although CMV IgG have been found positive in all of transsexuals, ELISA-CMV IgM have been found 3 homosexuals and 3 transsexuals. We have accepted CMV IgM seropositivity which was a sign for acute, active and reactive infectious disease. Although CMV IgM have been found negative in 21 cases, 18 cases have been found CMV IgM seropositivity which have been accepted for a sign of earlier infectious disease. 3 cases have been found to be negative for both CMV IgG and IgM. Homosexuals had several sexual contact diseases such as bacterial, protozoal and viral infection. CMV infection must be kept in mind when mentioning about community health which deals with latent and active CMV infectious diagnosis.

[Prevalence of antibodies against hepatitis C virus in a sample of homosexual males].

BACKGROUND: The finding of an important proportion of cases of hepatitis C without previous contact with blood or hemoderivates has led to suspect that there may be other routes of transmission among which sexual transmission may be found. METHODS: The presence of antibodies against the hepatitis C virus (anti-HCV) and the association of this infection with certain epidemiologic parameters and sexual practice was determined in 184 homosexual males with no other risk factors for virasis of intravenous transmission. Moreover, the prevalence of anti-HCV was evaluated in 210 voluntary blood donors. Every homosexual was surveyed on sexual practice and the first serum sample available of each of these patients was analyzed for anti-HVC and anti-HIV-1. RESULTS: Twenty-two homosexual (12%) were anti-HCV positive while only one (0.5%) of the control was positive for this marker (p < 0.0001). Thirty-six cases (19%) were anti-HIV positive (none of the controls). No statistical association was found between both serologic markers or between the presence of anti-HCV and the epidemiologic parameters evaluated. CONCLUSIONS: Homosexuals constitute a risk group for hepatitis C virus infection although the sexual route is probably not effective for transmission of this entity.

Changes in markers of disease progression in HIV-1 seroconverters: a comparison between cohorts of injecting drug users and homosexual men.

Comparisons of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) disease progression between risk groups are difficult primarily because of the long incubation period of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and unknown times of infection. This is believed to be the first study that directly compared changes in T-lymphocyte subsets following HIV-1 seroconversion between cohorts of predominantly black injecting drug users and predominantly white homosexual men. Longitudinal trends of CD4 and CD8 percentages of total lymphocytes during 4 years were modeled as piecewise linear functions with a two-parameter correlation structure to accommodate within-person repeated observations. Prior to seroconversion the 151 injecting drug users started with similar CD4% and CD8% levels compared with the 99 homosexual men. Following seroconversion, larger changes were observed overall in the homosexual men compared with the injecting drug users for both markers (p < or = 0.001). The major discrepancies, however, were limited to the first 2 years. Subsequently, the CD4% levels of the two cohorts converged and then declined at similar rates. These comparative analyses of HIV seroconverters in homosexual men and injecting drug users suggest that risk group has only a minor effect on the initial course of HIV infection.

The correlates of safer behavior among homosexually active men in Lima.

OBJECTIVE: To describe sexual behavior patterns and identify psychosocial and situational correlates of safer practices among men who have sex with other men in Lima. DESIGN: A cross-sectional survey. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: In 1992, 223 mostly young, working- and middle-class homosexually active men in Lima, who reported either being seronegative or not knowing their HIV status, were recruited from public places, gay organizations and through snowballing techniques. Measurements included patterns of sexual behavior and socialization with other homosexually active men, and psychosocial and situational factors. Three risk behavior indicators were used: the practice of unprotected receptive anal intercourse, the practice of unprotected anal intercourse (insertive or receptive) and an index of behavioral risk based on numbers of sexual partners for different risk practices. RESULTS: The subjects (mean age 24.9 years, SD 6.3) were mostly exclusively homosexual (74%) and self-identified as gay/homosexual (73%); 41% had had unprotected anal intercourse during the last 4 months (75% of them in the receptive role). Reporting sex in public places consistently predicted riskier behavior by any of the three indices, whereas a lower perception of benefits of condoms/safer sex, poor AIDS knowledge, participation in a steady relationship and higher self-efficacy were associated with one or two of the indices. CONCLUSIONS: Besides considering basic AIDS information and the promotion of condoms and safer sex, intervention programs for homosexually active men in Lima should emphasize the need for open discussions on safety in steady relationships, promote accurate perceptions of personal risk and sensitively address the special difficulties posed by sexual activity in public places.

[Zidovudine-resistant HIV strains in untreated intravenous drug users and homosexual men in Amsterdam infected in 1996].

OBJECTIVE: To gain insight into the spread of HIV strains with different sensitivities to antiretroviral drugs prescribed in the Netherlands. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study in intravenous drug users and homosexual men. SETTING: Amsterdam, the Netherlands. METHODS: HIV negative participants in the Amsterdam cohort studies among homosexual men and intravenous drug users are tested two to three times a year for HIV antibodies. The first positive serum sample of those who seroconverted was used to determine, on the basis of the nucleotide sequence of the reverse transcriptase gene of HIV, if viruses were present with a reduced sensitivity to reverse transcriptase inhibitors. RESULTS: In 1996, 17 new HIV infections occurred (8 in homosexual men and 9 in intravenous drug users). In two new infections in homosexual men HIV strains with reduced sensitivity to zidovudine were present.

Homosexual men (and lesbian men) in a heterosexual genre: three gangster films from Hong Kong.

Of the East Asian film genres that have captured the attention of film goers internationally, it should be of little surprise that martial and heroically masculine genres have been the most popular, for violent action translates well into any language. Although it has been no secret that male martiality often leaks into homoerotic desire (on the part of the audience, too), three Hong Kong films from 1998 have finally explicated the generic homosexuality that the action genre has been (defensively) ashamed to admit all along. However, rather than posit this textual homosexuality as transgressive, the generic forces under which these films operate rewrite their homosexualities, both gay and lesbian, into generic modes fashioned around regressive oppositions of gender, and not progressive liberations of sexuality.

The genetic properties of homosexual copulation behavior in Tribolium castaneum: diallel analysis.

The rate of homosexual copulation has been defined as the ratio between the number of homosexual mountings and the total number of mountings (homo and heterosexual) performed by a Tribolium castaneum male during a period of 30 min. In a laboratory population, the average rate when a number of males (m) and females (k x m) are tested together has been estimated in each of the six situations defined by m = 2 and 10 and k = 0.5, 1, and 2, k being the sex ratio among scored individuals. Good agreement was found between the observed rates of homosexual copulation and those expected assuming random contacts between pairs of individuals totally indiscriminate with respect to sex. The genetic properties of the trait have been investigated by means of a diallel analysis of six highly inbred lines derived from the same population and their F1 crosses. Significant general and specific combining ability effects were detected. When noninbred females were used for testing, the rate of homosexual copulation is expected to be higher for inbred than for noninbred males. This prediction, implying the existence of inbreeding depression for the trait, also was confirmed by the data.

Redundant homosexual F transfer facilitates selection-induced reversion of plasmid mutations.

F plasmids use surface exclusion to prevent the redundant entry of additional F plasmids during active growth of the host cells. This mechanism is relaxed during stationary phase and nonlethal selections, allowing homosexual redundant plasmid transfer. Homosexual redundant transfer occurs in stationary-phase liquid cultures, within nongrowing populations on solid media, and on media lacking a carbon source. We examined the relationship between homosexual redundant transfer, which occurs between F+ hosts, and reversion of a plasmid-encoded lac mutant allele, lacI33omegalacZ. Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and mutations that prevent normal transfer to F- cells reduced redundant transfer and selection-induced reversion of the lacI33omegalacZ allele. A recA null mutation reduced redundant transfer and selection-induced reversion of the lacI33omegalacZ mutation. Conversely, a recD null mutation increased redundant transfer and selection-induced reversion of the lacI33omegalacZ allele. These results suggest an explanation for why SDS and these mutations affect reversion of the plasmid lacI33omegalacZ allele. However, a direct causal relationship between transfer and reversion remains to be established. These results suggest that Rec proteins play an active role in redundant transfer and/or that redundant transfer is regulated with the activation of recombination. Redundant homosexual plasmid transfer during a period of stress may represent a genetic response that facilitates evolution of plasmid-encoded functions through mutation, recombination, reassortment, and dissemination of genetic elements present in the populations.

Retrovirus and malignant lymphoma in homosexual men.

We report malignant lymphoma in 27 homosexual men, of whom 22 had high-grade lymphomas (B-cell immunoblastic sarcoma or small non-cleaved lymphoma) and five had low-grade disease. Antibody to human T-cell lymphotropic virus type III (HTLV-III) was present in 13 (87%) of 15 with high-grade lymphoma and in two (40%) of five with low-grade disease. In contrast, only one (9%) of 11 "control" heterosexual patients with high-grade lymphoma had antibody to HTLV-III, while such antibody was found in none of 40 asymptomatic heterosexual controls and in 17 (55%) of 31 asymptomatic homosexual men. Of the homosexual lymphoma patients, 85% presented with disease in extranodal sites, including the central nervous system and rectum, and 81% had reversed T-helper/suppressor ratios. Median survival, despite treatment, is eight months. The acquired immunodeficiency syndrome-related lymphomas in homosexual men are extranodal, high-grade, B-lymphoid tumors, associated with exposure to HTLV-III and unusual clinical characteristics.

Determinants of retrovirus (HTLV-III) antibody and immunodeficiency conditions in homosexual men.

A cohort of homosexual men at high risk of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) was monitored to examine the relation between lifestyle, clinical conditions, T-lymphocyte subsets, and antibody to the AIDS-associated human retrovirus, human T-cell leukaemia virus III (HTLV-III). HTLV-III antibodies were present in 35 (53%) of the 66 subjects tested in June, 1982. 4 of the seronegative subjects had HTLV-III antibodies when re-tested one year later, a seroconversion rate of 1.2% per month. In the HTLV-III seropositive subjects, AIDS developed at a rate of 6.9% per year (minimum incidence of AIDS = 4.6% per year) and other clinical signs of immunodeficiency (lesser AIDS) at 13.1% per year. All 6 of the AIDS cases and at least 8 of the 10 lesser AIDS cases had detectable HTLV-III antibodies 1 week to 21 months before diagnosis. Of 24 other subjects with stable lymphadenopathy, 19 (79%) had or acquired HTLV-III antibodies. Lower helper T-cell counts were very closely related to HTLV-III seropositivity (r = -0.53, p = 0.0001), even in the 26 healthy subjects with no clinical abnormalities (r = -0.37, p = 0.07). In both univariate and multivariate analyses, the lifestyle risk factors for HTLV-III seropositivity were large number of homosexual partners (p less than or equal to 0.03) and receptive anal intercourse (p less than or equal to 0.03), with an apparent synergistic interaction between these two activities (chi 2 = 8.71, p = 0.003). These data suggest that frequent receptive anal intercourse with many homosexual partners predisposes to HTLV-III infection with the consequent emergence of lymphadenopathy and the various manifestations of lesser and fully fledged AIDS.

Comparison of the auditory systems of heterosexuals and homosexuals: click-evoked otoacoustic emissions.

Click-evoked otoacoustic emissions (CEOAEs) are echo-like waveforms emitted by normal-hearing cochleas in response to a brief transient. CEOAEs are known to be stronger in females than in males. In this experiment, the CEOAEs of homosexual and bisexual females were found to be intermediate to those of heterosexual females and heterosexual males. A parsimonious explanation is that the auditory systems of homosexual and bisexual females, and the brain structures responsible for their sexual orientation, have been partially masculinized by exposure to high levels of androgens prenatally. No difference in CEOAEs was observed between homosexual and heterosexual males.
