[Three deceptive cases of intrahepatic metastases of colorectal origin with endobiliary growth, simulating cholangiocarcinoma. Importance of immunostaining of cytokeratin 7 and 20].

Malignant tumors of the liver with intrabiliary growth are rare, except for some cholangiocarcinomas. Metastases with intrabiliary growth, whatever their origin, are rare. Moreover, colorectal metastasis can be particularly difficult to distinguish morphologically from some cholangiocarcinomas. We report 3 cases of late colorectal metastasis with intrabiliary growth, presenting as cholangiocarcinomas of the large ducts. Immunostaining with cytokeratins 7 and 20 attested the diagnostic and pointed out the spreading pattern of colorectal metastasis within biliary ducts. This study illustrates the capacity, probably underestimated, for colorectal metastasis to develop in the lumen of bile ducts and emphasizes the relevance of cytokeratin 7 and 20 immunostainings in such cases.

Appearances can be deceptive: an APC 1893del4 mutation with unusual properities. Mutations in brief no. 171. Online.

During a systematic search for germ-line APC mutations causative of familial adenomatous polyposis, we discovered what appeared to be an insertion mutation while simply checking exon 14PCR products by agarose gel electrophoresis (AGE). On AGE, exon 14PCR product from the known affected member of this family gave two bands: one of normal length, the other retarded on the gel equivalent to an increase in length of some 20-25 bp. Direct sequencing of DNA purified from the two bands gave identical results, and was consistent with amplification from the same two alleles: one wild-type, and the other having an 1893del4 mutation. This suggested that the normal length band on AGE consisted of DNA homoduplexes (normal:normal and mutant:mutant) and the retarded band consisted of DNA heteroduplexes (normal:mutant and mutant:normal). This hypothesis was tested by subjecting purified material from each of the two bands alone to a single cycle of heat denaturation and annealing, which showed that either band was equally capable of regenerating both bands. Because the anomalous migration of the heteroduplexes is observed in the presence of ethidium bromide, it implies that they have a cruciform of cruciform-like structure. This case illustrates the necessity to be aware of anomalous DNA migration and always sequence all putative mutations.

From deception trials to control reagents. The introduction of the control group about a century ago.

This is the story of the remarkable psychologist John E. Coover, who, in the early 1900s, was the first to advocate the comparison of experimental and control groups as a methodological necessity. Moreover, the author raises the issue of why control groups were launched about a century ago, and why psychology was comparatively early in codifying group comparison as a methodological routine. In dealing with these questions, the author discusses the relations between turn-of-the-century science and society as well as between psychophysical research and educational experimentation. Furthermore, the mystery is solved of how Coover's rightful place in the received history of experimental controls could be taken by precisely the authors whom he criticized for the lack of controls.

[Abdominal tuberculosis: deceptive and still encountered].

BACKGROUND: Extrapulmonary manifestations of tuberculosis are increasing in incidence. Abdominal tuberculosis may mimic a variety of gastrointestinal disorders. The diagnosis of abdominal tuberculosis is still difficult to establish before surgery. CASE REPORTS: We report 3 cases of abdominal tuberculosis in immunocompetent individuals. One patient presented with an ileocecal mass mimicking cancer. The second one presented with fever, ileocecal mass and ascites leading to the diagnosis of appendiceal peritonitis. The last patient was admitted for ascites, ovarian mass and high CA 125 serum level simulating ovarian cancer with peritoneal carcinomatosis. COMMENTS: In cases of abdominal tuberculosis when standard investigations are unhelpful, a PCR should be performed. Estimation of adenosine deaminase in ascitic fluid is an easy and reliable method for diagnosing tuberculous ascites. With these non invasive diagnostic procedures, surgery should be reserved only to patients with complications.

Rhino horns and paper cups: deceptive similarities between natural and human designs.

One cannot assume that resemblances between the mechanical devices of human technology and those produced by the evolutionary process reflect either specific copying of nature by people or some particular point of functional superiority. A third alternative is that the two mechanical contexts derive quite different advantages from a given arrangement. While this latter might appear unlikely, one can argue that it underlies such things as the use of conical shapes, helical tensile structures, spheres and cylinders, beams and columns of relatively low torsional stiffness, and geodesic shells.
