Incidence of homozygous beta-thalassaemia in New South Wales, 1961-1976.

A case-finding survey yielded 58 persons with transfusion-dependent homozygous beta-thalassaemia who lived either in New South Wales or in the Australian Capital Territory. Of those born between 1961 and 1976 in New South Wales, nearly 70% were of Greek or Greek-Cypriot origin and 18% of Italian origin. The New South Wales incidence rates for homozygous beta-thalassaemia were estimated as follows: one in 934 births, Greek origin; one in 264 births, Cypriot origin and one in 3441 births, Italian origin.

The changing distribution of Cypriots in London.

"This paper analyses the residential behaviour of Cypriots in Greater London over the last 30 years. First, patterns of settlement and movement at a borough level are described and some explanations offered for the changes observed. Second, the authors look in more detail at the actual process of residential relocation with the aid of the results of a questionnaire survey [of] Greek Cypriots in the borough of Haringey." Occupational stress as it relates to higher education, individuals and organizations.

This study examined through survey research methodology the degree to which, faculty, administrators and program coordinators, working in higher education, experience stress at work. The Occupational Stress Indicator was used, composed of four compound factors: sources of occupational stress, individual characteristics, coping strategies and the effects of stress. Preliminary findings showed that occupational stress has a negative impact on the degree of satisfaction with their achievement, value and growth, being strongest with faculty and coordinators, (dissatisfaction with career opportunities, personal growth, skill utilization). Another significant outcome was the dissatisfaction of faculty with the organizational design, structure and processes (communication, change implementation, motivation, supervision style, participation in decision-making). All possess individual characteristics of the Type A Scale; they all considered major sources of pressure in their jobs to be their relationships with others, home/work interface, their need to achieve personal and corporate success. Occupational stress has affected their state of health.

Beta-thalassaemia mutations and the underlying beta gene cluster haplotypes in the Greek population.

The polymorphic sites across the beta gene cluster (restriction haplotypes) in association with specific thalassaemic mutations were analyzed in representative samples of normal and thalassaemic Greeks in comparison to similar data of other populations around the mediterranean basin. We studied 316 normal chromosomes, 218 chromosomes from patients with thalassaemia major and 72 chromosomes from patients with thalassaemia intermedia. In the former group, haplotype frequencies followed the order I, IX, II, V etc.. In the group of patients with transfusion-dependent thalassaemia the order was I, II, V and VI, while in those with thalassaemia intermedia the most frequent haplotypes were I and VI. The frequency of haplotypes I and VI was higher among the thalassaemic chromosomes in comparison to those of the normal population; haplotype IX showed the inverse relation. These findings imply that the thalassaemic mutations occurred at a very early stage on haplotypes I and VI and much later on haplotype IX. Micromapping did not reveal any significant variations. Haplotypes I, II, V and VI were associated with the molecular defects IVS-1 nt 110, beta zero-39, IVS-1 nt 1 and IVS-1 nt 6 respectively. A number of other mutations were also identified. The molecular defect was identified also on a random sample of beta-thalassaemia carriers (424 chromosomes). On the basis of the overall data, the feasibility of prenatal diagnosis of thalassaemia by allele specific hybridization is ca. 80%, with the four most common oligomers and 95% when the set of probes expands to eight.

Factors contributing to occupational stress experienced by individuals employed in the fast food industry.

The present study, examined through survey research methodology, the factors or combination of factors which appear to contribute to the experience of occupational stress of individuals working in the fast-food industry. The Occupational Stress Indicator was used. Preliminary findings showed that there exists, several compound factors, which appear to be the most frequently encountered factors by the sample tested, such as the way they feel about their job; the way they behave generally; the way they interpret events around them; the sources of pressure in their job; and the way they cope with stress they experience. It appears that there are statistically significant differences between males and females as regards to the way they respond to stress, the sources of pressure in their job and the way they cope with stress they experience. Also, statistically significant differences exist between individuals in managerial and non-managerial positions, as regards to their personality type, the degree of ambition, and work dedication they possess.

User perspective of DITIS: virtual collaborative teams for home-healthcare.

DITIS supports home-care by offering wireless health care services for chronic illnesses. The main service is the dynamic creation, management and co-ordination of virtual collaborative healthcare teams for the continuous treatment of the patient at home, independently of the physical location of the team's members (or the patient). For each patient a flexible (dynamic) virtual medical team is provided, made up from visiting home-care nurses, doctors, and other health care professionals, responsible for each case. This virtual team is able to provide dedicated, personalized and private service to the home residing patient on a need based and timely fashion, under the direction of the treating specialist, without the necessity to move the patient from his home, thus making better use of the scarce and expensive medical professionals and scarce hospital beds, irrespective of geographic or organisational barriers. DITIS uses a number of state of the art technologies which are seamlessly put together, such as collaboration and personalization via mobile agents, access to medical data from anywhere and any time via a variety of mobile devices and a variety of protocols (i.e., WAP, HTML) and continuous connectivity via new communication technologies such as ADSL and GPRS, and soon UMTS. All the technologies are selected for platform independence.

Health Education represents essential elements in the control and eradication campaigns of Echinococcosis/Hydatidosis. The basic elements and the applicatory principles and methodologies are examined. Moreover, the most appropriate intervention methodologies are defined through reference target. There is also a description of the experiences and the methodologies adopted in different Countries of the Mediterranean basin, where the disease is endemic.
