Sponsor of Texas health laws brings expertise to Congress.

An opponent of government regulation of hospital costs, Rep. Bob Gammage of Texas thinks that Congress should have the right to veto the triggering of mandatory cost controls. It makes no sense, he says, to single out a particular industry for what, in effect, would be wage and price controls, especially because hospitals don't control what they buy, in terms of goods and services.

Membership issues within the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine: results of a survey.

A questionnaire survey of the membership of the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine ( ACRM ) was conducted in early 1983. Results relating to membership issues indicate that the organization should not return to physician-only membership. The issue of opening membership to baccalaureate-level rehabilitation professionals polarized the membership. The dimension of polarization is not between physicians/non-physicians. The membership is uncertain whether the current size of the organization is too small. The data suggest that appeals for new members should be primarily based on aspects of professionalism. Secondary reasons for joining differ for subgroups of members. The recommendation of a current ACRM member may be a decisive influence in a potential new member's decision to join. It is suggested that a major discriminating factor among members relates to belief in interdisciplinary rehabilitation as the ultimate concern of the ACRM .

Descriptive cataloging of serials: the National Library of Medicine versus the Library of Congress.

Descriptive cataloging practices for serial differ significantly in some respects between the Library of Congress and the National Library of Medicine. This paper compares some of these differences and indicates the impact they can have on the development of on-line cooperative data bases such as OCLC. Attention is also given to the possible impact of the second edition of the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules on serials cataloging. The need for standardization is stressed.

Analysis of prevention benefits in comprehensive health care reform legislation in the 102nd Congress.

One of the most important factors affecting the use of preventive services is health insurance coverage; however, until recently, most public and private health plans have explicitly excluded coverage of most preventive care. As a result, preventive services are used less frequently than recommended guidelines suggest, which contributes to the high incidence of preventable morbidity and mortality in the United States. Recent congressional efforts to enact national health care reform legislation present an important opportunity to analyze coverage for preventive services. This article presents the results of an analysis of the prevention benefits in 23 comprehensive health care reform bills introduced in 1991 during the first session of the 102nd Congress. I classified each bill by type (employer-based, single payer, managed competition, tax credit, and insurance market reform) and through a content analysis identified benefits for immunization, screening, and counseling services (including cost-sharing provisions), as well as funding for community-based health promotion. I interviewed congressional staff members of the sponsors of each bill to discuss their rationale for including or excluding specific prevention benefits and their reliance on existing policy, guidelines, and health services research or on the involvement of interest groups in developing prevention benefits. I conclude that health care reform is likely to address prevention, particularly in covering specific clinical preventive services, such as well-child visits, prenatal care, immunizations, family planning, and cancer screening. The prevention benefits least likely to be included in health care reform are coverage for counseling services and funding for community-based health promotion.

Physicians should keep an open mind on complementary health care, Congress says.

Three hundred physicians from Canada and abroad attended the 3rd World Congress of Medical Acupuncture and Natural Medicine held in Edmonton last summer. Speakers emphasized that physicians should view complementary health care services with an open mind and consider therapeutic options that may be used in addition to conventional medical therapy.

Congressional committees: congress at work.

Among many people, the term "committee" holds a negative connotation. In Congress, however, committees hold the key to passage of any piece of legislation. Understanding committee structure and function is essential in wielding influence on committee outcomes. This article is designed to better acquaint the ORL nurse with key health-related Congressional committees currently involved in drafting health care reform proposals. In addition, the path legislation follows from introduction to passage is schematically reviewed.

DDW Congress Report 1995 San Diego, 14-17 May 1995.

This year's DDW again presented us with an extremely interesting and very up-to-date variety of endoscopic abstracts, dealing with established as well as new technology, and increasingly attempting to evaluate relevant issues such as cost-effectiveness and outcome. As is the case every year, the present DDW Congress Report faces the problem of how to cover all the abstracts accepted, while at the same time trying not to deal with them too superficially. The published endoscopic abstracts, the number of which has greatly increased, form the basis for this review, although an update for oral or poster presentation in San Diego may have changed the message in a few of them.

[Sleep of sleep research personnel--results of the Munster Congress survey].

Due to different knowledge of sleep and sleep disorders (i.e. focussing) sleep quality of sleep-researchers may be better or worse than the sleep of other scientists. On the Münster Congress for Sleep-research and Sleep medicine in March 1994 we investigated this question using the Pittsburger Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). 46 sleep researchers, 52 practitioners and 103 scientists of other disciplines from the Münster University filled out the questionnaire. Results show no difference in overall sleep quality between the three groups, but only sleep quality in the group of sleep researchers shows a bimodal distribution suggesting a subpopulation with more serious sleep problems. 10 to 15% of the total academic population can be regarded as "poor" sleepers. Especially the group of practitioners, in which we found the highest values of daytime sleepiness, seems to be a risk-population for sleep disorders.

The conference was sponsored by the International Congress of Oral Implantologists, the American College of Oral Implantology, the American Society of Osseointegration, and the Association of Dental Implant Auxiliaries & Practice Management. Copulation and sexual congress of Leptorhynchoides thecatus (Acanthocephala).

Pairs of the acanthocephalan Leptorhynchoides thecatus from laboratory infections were observed copulating at 21 days, 5 wk, and 12 wk postinfection (PI) in green sunfish, Lepomis cyanellus. Additionally, copulating pairs of worms from natural infections were observed. In each instance of paired males and females, the male was in 1 pyloric cecum of the fish and the female in another. Each had its posterior end protruding into the intestinal lumen at the point from which the ceca arise. The completely extruded bursa of the male fully enclosed the posterior end of the female in a firm attachment. In 1 instance at 5 wk PI, 2 males were observed in copula. One male had its copulatory bursa completely retracted, and the copulatory bursa of the other male was positioned just as though the mate were a female. Based on these and previous findings, it is concluded that male acanthocephalans mate indiscriminately and often throughout their lives. Habitation of ceca maximizes sexual congress because individuals often are positioned with their posterior ends extending into the intestinal lumen within the small area from which ceca originate. Emigration to find a mate is unnecessary.
