Circumcision and health among rural women of southern Somalia as part of a family life survey.

A study of 859 rural women in 16 semipastoralist and semiagricultural villages in Southern Somalia reaffirmed the special significance of female circumcision as a source of full womanhood and an instrument for the control of female sexuality in Somalia. Although condemned in the West, this strongly embedded tradition enjoys unrestrained privilege in one of Africa's predominantly Islamic pastoral societies. The author reviews and analyzes the age-old tradition of circumcision, paying attention to the accompanying health problems as part of the Family Life Center's program. The Family Life program aims at improving the health conditions of rural women in Somalia and increasing their access to educational and economic opportunities.

An instrument to assess acute respiratory infection case management in Egypt.

UNLABELLED: To develop an instrument to measure the quality of acute respiratory infection (ARI) case management among Egyptian children. METHODS: A baseline survey of all health facilities in a single district, using a multi-data source instrument. Data sources included providers, caretakers, patient records and observation of patient care. MAIN RESULTS: Physicians did not count the respiratory rate and check for subcostal retraction. Eighty-seven per cent of children who did not require antibiotics received them. Of five children who required antibiotics, four (80%) were prescribed an oral regimen. Three of these should have been admitted to a hospital but were not. Antibiotics were available at the facilities an estimated 7.9 months per year. Oxygen for inpatient treatment was available in one of two hospitals. CONCLUSIONS: This instrument was useful for comprehensively evaluating facility capability to provide quality case management. Deficiencies were identified but were not unexpected in a baseline survey. The Egypt ARI program has the potential to have a substantial impact on how children with ARI are diagnosed and treated in health facilities.

Population movements and prospects for development in South Lebanon.

"This study aims at clarifying the relationship between population movements and planning for regional development in South Lebanon. It includes an account of these movements, their different paths and destinations and the causes that led to both voluntary and forced emigration from the South, which has suffered from the deterioration of its natural resources and lost a large proportion of its human resources. The study analyses the repercussions of these movements on the condition of the inhabitants of this region. It aims at focussing attention on the magnitude of the emigration phenomena with a view to arresting the trend and its ensuing dangers." Migration to foreign countries and to other parts of Lebanon is considered.
