[The APUD-system function of the intestines and the morphological changes in the internal organs of adult rabbits infected with toxigenic Vibrio cholerae].

V. cholerae infection with clearly pronounced diarrhea was reproduced in adult rabbits with the use of the RITARD system. The state of the APUD system of the intestine of the animals and morphological changes in internal organs in experimental cholera were described. As noted in this study, the manifestation of changes in the intestine and other organs, as well as the reaction of apudocytes to V. cholerae infection, were linked with the intensity of diarrhea and the time of the death of the animals.

Multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN)--an overview and case report--patient with sporadic bilateral pheochromocytoma, hyperparathyroidism and marfanoid habitus.

The multiple endocrine neoplasia syndromes are divided into two categories: MEN type I and MEN type II. The MEN type II syndrome is further divided into MEN IIa and MEN IIb. The syndromes are characterized by benign and malignant changes in two or more endocrine organs, as well as incidental changes in nervous, muscular and connective tissue. Two main forms can be distinguished: the MEN-I syndrome with hyperplasia of the parathyroid gland, accompanied by islet cell tumor and pituitary adenoma; the MEN-II syndrome with medullary thyroid carcinoma in combination with bilateral pheochromocytoma and hyperplasia of the parathyroid gland (MEN IIa), while type IIb is characterized by the additional appearance of neurocutaneous manifestations without primary hyperparathyroidism. Characteristics shared by these syndromes include the involved cell type, most of the tumors are composed of one or more specific polypeptide- and biogenic amine-producing cell types (APUD--amine precursor uptake and decarboxylation). The second characteristic is the increased incidence in certain families. The hereditary component is autosomal dominant with variable expression but high penetrance. Mechanisms of tumorigenesis differ in these syndromes. While MEN I is caused by an inherited mutation of a tumor suppressor gene, menin, located on the long arm of chromosome 11, MEN II is caused by activation of the RET proto-oncogene. We have reported the case of a young man exhibiting bilateral pheochromocytoma. In addition, the patient showed mild primary hyperparathyroidism and marfanoid habitus, all these stigmata usually being part of the MEN-II syndrome. Although this described patient showed a phenotypic mixture of the MEN-IIa and MEN-IIb syndrome, the genetic analysis for MEN II and von-Hippel-Lindau gene did not reveal any pathologic mutations, the endocrine disorders described here are not related to multiple endocrine neoplasia syndromes.

[APUD- and RAA- regulatory systems in acute radiation injury].

An experimental morpho-functional assessment of rat APUD and RAA systems status in acute radiation injury (cerebral form) was performed. The named regulatory systems were found to display an actual momentary post-exposure reaction, followed by subsequent functional changes of a distinct phase character. The latter were shown to determine in many respects the clinical picture and in some cases the outcome of the disease.

[Apudocytes in experimental cholera vaccination].

The morphofunctional state of apudocytes in the gastrointestinal tract and immunocompetent organs (spleen, mesenteric lymph nodes) of mice immunized with chemical bivalent cholera vaccine was studied. The study revealed that the APUD system of the intestine and the argyrophil elements of the immunocompetent organs of white mice gave a response to the oral administration of commercial cholera vaccine. The reaction of the APUD system of the gastrointestinal tract was manifested by a significant increase in the number of apudocytes and their greater synthesizing activity in the immunized animals during the period of maximum immunological transformation of the macroorganism. The immunization of mice with Vibrio cholerae facilitated the maintenance of homeostasis in the macroorganism and prevented appearance of morphological disturbances in its organs and system after subsequent challenge with V. cholerae.

[Importance of some apudocytes in gastric ulcer bleeding prediction].

In 6 patients with uncomplicated gastric ulcer (GU) and 8 patients with GU complicated by acute bleeding morphohistochemical and ultrastructural analysis of apudocytes of gastric mucous membrane in the ulcer, periulcer and remote zone was carried out with detection of morphofunctional changes predicting ulcer bleeding. It is established that G- and ECL-apudocytes hyperplasia and hyperfunction in these zones have stable, irreversible nature in gastric ulcer bleeding, and are reliable prognostic criteria of this complication.

[Differentiation of endocrinocytes in the small-intestinal epithelium of albino rats in ontogenesis].

By means of the light microscopy method differentiation and dynamics on contents of endocrinocytes have been studied in epithelium of the initial part of the jejunum, of the caudal part of the ileum and of the middle part between them during pre- and postnatal periods of development. Formation of the endocrine apparatus of the mucous membrane epithelium in the small intestine takes place simultaneously with tissue differentiation of the epithelial layer. The population density of endotheliocytes of the mucous membrane is maximal in the initial part of the jejunum and decreases gradually in the caudal direction. By the 15th day of the postnatal development endocrinocytes in composition of the epithelium in the small intestine reach a high level of the specific differentiation and their amount increases by 1.3 times in comparison with that in newborn animals.

[The organizational characteristics of the APUD system in mammalian lungs at different stages of ontogeny].

The organization peculiarities of APUD-system in the lungs of rabbits, rats and guinea pigs has been studied. The endocrine system in the lungs of rabbits in pre- and postnatal ontogenesis is presented by the adipocytes and neuroepithelial bodies (NEB) containing a considerable number of monoamines. The number of argyrophil adipocytes and NEBs in the lungs of 21 and more day-old adult rats seem to be less than in fetuses and newborns. Monoamines are not revealed in the endocrine rat lung structures by means of the glyoxylic acid. In the lungs of guinea pigs the single argyrophil adipocytes and NEBs are determined in the gestation period.

[The characteristics of the morphological changes in the gastric mucosa in duodenal peptic ulcer, ulcer recurrence after vagotomy and in the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome].

Results of morphometry and count of certain kinds of endocrinocytes of gastric mucosa are analyzed. Pronounced proliferative alterations of the gastric mucosa were found with clear signs of the increased function of the structures responsible for acid gastric secretion. In part of the patients with ulcer disease of the duodenum there are considerable changes in the amount of certain kinds of endocrinocytes of the antral portion of the stomach, which form accumulations in the form of different fields and even focal zones. Such alterations in the gastric mucosa have correlative relationships with the level of acid gastric secretion.
