Unprecedented syndioselectivity and syndiotactic polyolefin melting temperature: polypropylene and poly(4-methyl-1-pentene) from a highly active, sterically expanded eta1-fluorenyl-eta1-amido zirconium complex.

The structurally unique, sterically expanded eta1-fluorenyl-eta1-amido single-site precatalyst, Me2Si(eta1-N-tBu)(eta1-C29H36)ZrCl2.OEt2 (3), upon activation with methylaluminoxane (MAO), is remarkably active and constitutes the most syndioselective alpha-olefin polymerization catalyst system yet reported. 3/MAO affords as-prepared syndiotactic polypropylene with [rrrr] > 99% and unprecedented melting temperatures for the unannealed (165 degrees C) and annealed (174 degrees C) polymers. The activity of this system is 4 times that of the prototypical syndioselective catalyst Me2C(eta5-C5H4)(eta5-C13H8)ZrCl2/MAO. The high activity and syndioselectivity of 3/MAO can be extended to the production of syndiotactic poly(4-methyl-1-pentene) with a record melting temperature of 215 degrees C and [rrrr] = 97%.

Unusual reactivity of tris(pyrazolyl)borate zirconium benzyl complexes.

The synthesis and reactivity of [Tp*Zr(CH2Ph)2][B(C6F5)4] (2, Tp* = HB(3,5-Me2pz)3, pz = pyrazolyl) have been explored to probe the possible role of Tp'MR2+ species in group 4 metal Tp'MCl3/MAO olefin polymerization catalysts (Tp' = generic tris(pyrazolyl)borate). The reaction of Tp*Zr(CH2Ph)3 (1) with [Ph3C][B(C6F5)4] in CD2Cl2 at -60 degrees C yields 2. 2 rearranges rapidly to [{(PhCH2)(H)B(mu-Me2pz)2}Zr(eta2-Me2pz)(CH2Ph)][B(C6F5)4] (3) at 0 degrees C. Both 2 and 3 are highly active for ethylene polymerization and alkyne insertion. Reaction of 2 with excess 2-butyne yields the double insertion product [Tp*Zr(CH2Ph)(CMe=CMeCMe=CMeCH2Ph)][B(C6F5)4] (4). Reaction of 3 with excess 2-butyne yields [{(PhCH2)(H)B(mu-Me2pz)2}Zr(Cp*)(eta2-Me2pz)][B(C6F5)4] (6, Cp* = C5Me5) via three successive 2-butyne insertions, intramolecular insertion, chain walking, and beta-Cp* elimination.

Nonchelated d0 zirconium-alkoxide-alkene complexes.

The reaction of Cp'2Zr(O(t)Bu)Me (Cp' = C5H4Me) and [Ph3C][B(C6F5)4] yields the base-free complex [Cp'2Zr(O(t)Bu)][B(C6F5)4] (6), which exists as Cp'2Zr(O(t)Bu)(ClR)+ halocarbon adducts in CD2Cl2 or C6D5Cl solution. Addition of alkenes to 6 in CD2Cl2 solution at low temperature gives equilibrium mixtures of Cp'2Zr(O(t)Bu)(alkene)+ (12a-l), 6, and free alkene. The NMR data for 12a-l are consistent with unsymmetrical alkene bonding and polarization of the alkene C=C bond with positive charge buildup at C(int) and negative charge buildup at C(term). These features arise due to the lack of d-pi* back-bonding. Equilibrium constants for alkene coordination to 6 in CD2Cl2 at -89 degrees C, K(eq) = [12][6](-1)[alkene](-1), vary in the order: vinylferrocene (4800 M(-1)) >> ethylene (7.0) approximately alpha-olefins > cis-2-butene (2.2) > trans-2-butene (<0.1). Alkene coordination is inhibited by sterically bulky substituents on the alkene but is greatly enhanced by electron-donating groups and the beta-Si effect. Compounds 12a-l undergo two dynamic processes: reversible alkene decomplexation via associative substitution of a CD2Cl2 molecule, and rapid rotation of the alkene around the metal-(alkene centroid) axis.

Synthesis, characterization, and activity in ethylene polymerization of silica supported cationic cyclopentadienyl zirconium complexes.

Cp*ZrMe3 reacts with silica pretreated at 800 degrees C, SiO(2-(800)) through two pathways: (a) protolysis of a Zr-Me group by surface silanols and (b) transfer of a methyl group to the surface by opening of strained siloxane bridges, in a relative proportion of ca. 9/1, respectively, affording a well-defined surface species [([triple bond]SiO)ZrCp*(Me)2], 3, but with two different local environments 3a, [([triple bond]SiO)ZrCp*(Me)2][[triple bond]Si-O-Si[triple bond]], and the other with 3b, [structure: see text]. The reaction of the species 3 with B(C6F5)3 is controlled by this local environment and gives three surface species [([triple bond]SiO)ZrCp*(Me)](+)[MeB(C6F5)3]- [[triple bond]Si-O-Si[triple bond]], 4a (20%), [([triple bond]SiO)ZrCp*(Me)](+)[(Me)B(C6F5)3]- [[triple bond]Si-Me], 4b (10%), and [([triple bond]SiO)2ZrCp*](+)[(Me)B(C6F5)(3)](-)[[triple bond]Si-O-Si[triple bond]], 5 (70%). On the contrary, the reaction of Cp*Zr(Me)3, Cp2Zr(Me)2 with [[triple bond]SiO-B(C6F5)3](-)[HNEt2Ph]+, 6, leads to a unique species [([triple bond]SiO)B(C6F5)3](-)[Cp*Zr(Me)2.NEt2Ph]+, 7, and [([triple bond]SiO)ZrCp2](+)[(Me)B(C6F5)3]-, 9 respectively. The complexes 4 and 7 are active catalysts in ethylene polymerization at room temperature, 93 and 67 kg PE mol Zr1- atm(-1) bar(-1), respectively, indicating that covalently bounded Zr catalyst 4 is slightly more active than the "floating" cationic catalyst 7.

Uncatalyzed zirconium-mediated biphenylation of o-dihalobenzenes to form triphenylenes.

The reaction of [Zr(biphe)3][(Li.(THF)4)2], where biphe is 2,2'-biphenyldiyl, with an o-dihaloarene produces a triphenylene. Two new bonds are created in this rare example of an uncatalyzed, Zr-mediated aryl-aryl bond formation. Multiple biphe fragments can be incorporated to give larger triphenylene-containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. This reaction can introduce significant strain and was demonstrated to tolerate alkyl and methoxy substituents.

Zirconium tetrachloride-formaldehyde sigma-complexes: A computational and spectroscopic investigation

We have carried out a combined theoretical-experimental study of the structures and energies of ZrCl(4)-aldehyde complexes using (13)C NMR spectroscopy and a DFT (B3LYP) computational approach. The computational investigation has demonstrated the existence of different types of complexes: a 1:1 complex (H(2)CO-ZrCl(4)), various 2:1 complexes ((H(2)CO)(2)-ZrCl(4)), and several dimeric species. The analysis of the energies involved in the formation of the various complexes has indicated that the dimeric species should correspond to the only adduct observed in the (13)C NMR spectra (carbonyl resonance at 226.96 ppm) when a 1:1 ZrCl(4)/aldehyde molar ratio is used, while the 2:1 complex should be responsible for the signal at 224.30 ppm that is recorded when this molar ratio is 1:2.

Zirconium hydrocarbyl chemisorption on sulfated metal oxides: new supports, chemisorption pathways, and implications for catalysis.

The sulfated metal oxides (SMOs) sulfated stannia (SnS), sulfated iron oxide (FeS), and sulfated titanium dioxide (TiS) have been synthesized and examined as support materials/cocatalysts/activators for molecule-based olefin polymerization and hydrogenation catalysis. (13)C CPMAS NMR spectroscopic analysis of Cp(2)Zr((13)CH(3))(2)/SMO chemisorption shows that cationic zirconocenium species are formed along with varying amounts of catalytically inactive micro-oxo (Cp(2)Zr(CH(3))O-surface) species, depending on the support material. Ethylene polymerization data with the supported catalysts show that polymerization activity is dependent on both precursor ligation [Zr(CH(2)Ph)(4) > (Me(5)Cp)ZrMe(3)] and the nature of the support (SnS > FeS > TiS). Poisoning studies were performed in conjunction with ethylene polymerization, mediated by (Me(5)Cp)ZrMe(3) supported on each SMO, and reveal that, for (Me(5)Cp)ZrMe(3)/SnS, 61 +/- 5% of the Zr sites are catalytically significant, while, for (Me(5)Cp)ZrMe(3)/FeS, this quantity is 22 +/- 2%, and for (Me(5)Cp)ZrMe(3)/TiS, 63 +/- 9%. These catalysts are also active for benzene hydrogenation and are separable from liquid-phase products using physical or, in the case of FeS, magnetic techniques.

Nitro and Nitroso Metathesis Reactions with Monomeric Zirconium Imido Complexes.

The bis(cyclopentadienyl)(tert-butylimido)zir-conium complex 1 undergoes ambient-temperature metathesis reactions with nitro- and nitrosoarenes, providing a rare nonphotochemical synthesis of cis-azoxy and cis-azo compounds, respectively. 2-Nitro-2-methylpropane also undergoes metathesis to give trans-(tert-butylazoxy)-2-methylpropane. This reaction was studied kinetically, and the rate was found to be first order in both 1 and substrate and inversely proportional to the concentration of tetrahydrofuran, with activation parameters DeltaH(double dagger) = 15 +/- 2 kcal mol(-1) and DeltaS(double dagger) = -26 +/- 3 cal mol(-1) K(-1).

Synthesis, properties and structures of eight-coordinate zirconium(IV) and hafnium(IV) halide complexes with phosphorus and arsenic ligands.

Eight-coordinate [MX(4)(L-L)(2)] (M = Zr or Hf; X = Cl or Br; L-L = o-C(6)H(4)(PMe(2))(2) or o-C(6)H(4)(AsMe(2))(2)) were made by displacement of Me(2)S from [MX(4)(Me(2)S)(2)] by three equivalents of L-L in CH(2)Cl(2) solution, or from MX(4) and L-L in anhydrous thf solution. The [MI(4)(L-L)(2)] were made directly from reaction of MI(4) with the ligand in CH(2)Cl(2) solution. The very moisture-sensitive complexes were characterised by IR, UV/Vis, and (1)H and (31)P NMR spectroscopy and microanalysis. Crystal structures of [ZrCl(4)[o-C(6)H(4)(AsMe(2))(2)](2)], [ZrBr(4)[-C(6)H(4)(PMe(2))(2)](2)], [ZrI(4)[o-C(6)H(4)(AsMe(2))(2)](2)] and [HfI(4)[o-C(6)H(4)(AsMe(2))(2)](2)] all show distorted dodecahedral structures. Surprisingly, unlike the corresponding Ti(iv) systems, only the eight-coordinate complex was found in each system. In contrast, the ligand o-C(6)H(4)(PPh(2))(2) forms only six-coordinate complexes [MX(4)[-C(6)H(4)(PPh(2))(2)]] which were fully characterised spectroscopically and analytically. Surprisingly the tripodal triarsine, MeC(CH(2)AsMe(2))(3), also produces eight-coordinate [MX(4)[MeC(CH(2)AsMe(2))(3)](2)] in which the triarsines bind as bidentates in a distorted dodecahedral structure. There is no evidence for seven-coordination as found in some thioether systems.
