[Endoscopic and morphological characteristics of the bronchi and lungs in asbestosis and dust-induced bronchitis in asbestos-textile industry workers].

A bronchofibroscopy study of cases with histologic investigation of the bronchi and pulmonary mucous biopsy of 29 asbestos-textile workers, revealed diffuse bilateral endo-bronchitis (DBE) with concomitant tracheitis at different stages. No correlation was found between the endoscopy pictures and the clinical manifestations of asbestosis and dust bronchitis. The asbestosis diseased patients displayed pulmonary fibrosis++ without granulomatous inflammation in the asbestos dusts zone. In some cases, bronchial epithelium diffuse metaplasia was diagnosed with some dysplasia elements, as well as papillomatosis and malignant tumours in the lungs. Dust bronchitis++ and asbestosis can perform precancerous conditions in the lungs, what should be taken into account in cancer prevention measures for asbestos industry workers.

[Arterial pressure studies of the workers and employees of a textile plant].

The results of a study of the arterial pressure of the workers and employees in a textile plant in Vratsa are presented and discussed. The frequency of hypertension is 16.32%, symptomatic hypertension--3.22%, borderline hypertension--27.07%, hypotension--5.36%. Statistically significantly hypertension is more frequent in persons with a hereditary predisposition for arterial hypertension, are over 40 years of age and with overweight. The borderline hypertension becomes frequent after 50 years of age. Hypertension was not found statistically significantly more often in persons who work or had worked in conditions of professional noise above 85-105 decibels, are with higher education, psychic trauma, using more salt and smokers. Hereditary predisposition and overweight were equally frequent in the patients with renal hypertension and hypertension disease. The results support the conception that hypertension is a polygenic hereditary disease in the basis of which lies renal mechanism.

Hematological effects of textile mill effluent on freshwater fish Oreochromis mossambicus (Trewaves).

O. mossambicus was exposed to sublethal concentrations of a textile mill effluent to study the hematological changes as a function of feeding/starvation, aeration/non-aeration and concentration. Increase in concentration produced a dose dependent increase in RBCs (0.87 x 10(6) to 1.63 x 10(6)/mm3), WBCs (0.070 x 10(6) to 0.520 x 10(6)/mm3), hemoglobin (3.7 to 5.6%) and hematocrit (9.0 to 12.3%) and a decrease in MCV (111.8 to 88.2 microns 3), MCHC (41.05 to 31.35%) and MCH (44.2 to 33.9 pg).

[Detection of the presence of formaldehyde in textiles by using color tests with acetylacetone and chromotropic acid].

In 61 textile materials of cotton, wool and synthetic fibre formaldehyde was determined using colour tests with acetylacetone and chromotropic acid. Full agreement of the results of both tests was demonstrated. In 61 studied materials formaldehyde was demonstrated in 44 samples and in 17 samples it was absent. Formaldehyde was present in materials submitted to end-use finish. The possibility was showed also of formaldehyde passage from the finished materials into materials not containing it following their storage together. Frequent washing and ironing of materials after finish may lead to formaldehyde loss from the materials. The usefulness is stressed of colour tests for the diagnosis and prevention of formaldehyde-induced clothing-related eczema.

Vibration in textile mills.

The vibration in nine halls of the six weaving mills was measured in 1978-80. The measurements were taken at regular intervals in the working area of the weavers, which was the wooden support attached to the machine or the floor of the textile mill. The accelerometer was mounted with screws onto the working area, and all vibration samples were analyzed immediately, in situ. The vibration of the floor was tangent to or exceeded slightly the "reduced comfort boundary" specified in International Standard ISO 2631/1 (1985) only in the areas where the floor was not against the ground. The greatest amount of vibration occurred on the supports which had been attached to the machines. On these supports the vibration in places exceeded the "fatigue-decreased proficiency boundary."

[Morbidity among textile industry workers evaluated on the basis of cross sectional studies and absenteeism data].

In the study of a randomly selected group of textile workers, a tentative comparative analysis of chronic diseases prevalence rates, as estimated from medical examinations and certificates on temporary work disablement, was carried out. The information from both those sources is highly differentiated, depending on the type of disease. In case of diseases of endocrine glands, metabolism, blood and haematopoietic organs, as well as mental disorders, diseases of the circulatory and osteomuscular systems, the rates of diagnoses through medical examinations considerably surpass those indicated by certificates of temporary work disablement. E.g. circulatory system diseases were found in 29% of 5132 subjects, whereas only 16% of subjects exhibited absenteeism related to that disease. The divergence of the rates of diagnoses and sickness absenteeism was found in the central nervous system diseases (1%), heart diseases (7%), chronic bronchitis (3.8%-3.2%), gastric and duodenal ulcer (4.7%-4.3%) and in the diseases of liver, gallbladder and pancreas (6.0%-5.3%).

Exponential models for analyses of time-related factors, illustrated with asbestos textile worker mortality data.

In any study based on an occupational cohort, it is important to consider the variation in risk factors over time. Cumulative exposure is the most important time-related factor for exposure-response analyses, whereas other time-related factors such as age at risk, year at risk, and length of follow-up may be confounders and effect modifiers. This paper examines the family of exponential models which can be used for time-related analyses of studies based on an occupational cohort. Analyses using Poisson regression, the proportional hazards model, and the logistic model are presented, and their interrelationships explored. These models are illustrated with data from a cohort study of lung cancer mortality among asbestos textile plant workers. All three approaches yielded similar effect estimates. In particular, Poisson regression and the proportional hazards model yielded very similar findings, but Poisson regression has some conceptual and computational advantages.

[Experimental animal studies on the problem of sealing a woven vascular prosthesis and a textile patch by direct-current activated autologous blood].

The results of our animal experiments showed that the sealing of a woven vascular prosthesis or a textile patch by in vitro electrically activated blood by means of direct current is an alternative for the sealing by fibrin adhesive. The materials sealed in this way are resistant to the endogenic fibrinolysis. This simple and non-expensive method is not useful for heparinised blood and in disturbances of coagulation.

[Health status and working conditions of female workers in the textile industry in Lódź].

Within a cross-sectional representative study of textile industry workers in Lódź, the rate of chronic diseases in particular occupational groups of women, as related to age, socio-living conditions and work environment, has been analysed. Furthermore, a representative gynaecologic examination has been carried out in a randomly selected group of women and occupational and non-occupational workload has been estimated. The study delivered ample information on the health conditions and revealed a number of disadvantageous phenomena inherent in the population and in the gynecologic care system for the women employed in the test plants.

[Incidence of arterial hypertension in the population of workers in the textile industry in Lódź].

Textile workers in Lódź have undergone a cross-sectional representative study aimed at the detection of arterial hypertension. In addition, the impact of sex, age, overweight, blood cholesterol level, smoking habit and noise upon the prevalence of that disease has been tested. Arterial hypertension has been found in 8.3% subjects, 9.2%--women, 6.7%--men. The prevalence was increasing significantly with age. Those with overweight exhibited higher prevalence rates. Hypercholesterolemia was accompanied by more frequent arterial hypertension; in women it was statistically significant. No significant negative effects of smoking and noise as occupational hazards promoting that disease have been found.

A study of dynamic lung functions in textile workers.

The current study was done to determine the normal ventilatory dynamic indices in healthy male textile workers and to observe the influence of exposure to cotton dust. Toshiniwal's Expirograph is used to record the Forced Vital Capacity tracing and from this tracing, other Forced Expiratory Volumes like FEVO.5, FEVO.75 and FEV1.0 are calculated. The data was statistically analysed and compared with the values reported by various other workers. It was observed that all functional parameters showed a decline with age, both in the control as well as the exposed group. The mean values in the exposed group were generally lower than the controls, and the difference was larger and statistically significant in the subjects of 40-49 year age-group, may be because they were exposed to cotton dust for a long duration.

[Gas chromatographic determination of biphenyl and 2-phenylphenol in the environmental air of dyeing-plant rooms of the textile industry].

A report is made on a method of sampling and analysis of biphenyl and 2-phenylphenol which are present in the environmental air of the dyeing plant rooms of the textile industry. The sampling is carried out by filtering environmental air through small pipes containing two layers of Porapak Q 80-100 mesh, the first one of 150 mg for the analysis and the other, of 50 mg, for the control, with a flux of about 1 l/min. The report includes the description of some tests concerning shifting and displacement with various fluxes, as well as the recovery of known quantities and the stability of the sampling. The saturation for the mixture of the two pollutants was about 130 mg/g of biphenyl and more than 100 mg/g of 2-phenylphenol. The gaschromatographic analysis was carried out on 2 ml of cyclohexane; methylacetate 80:20 by which was obtained the absorbent used for the sampling. An analytical column was used with 3% Apiezon L, 1% phosphoric acid, 2% Carbowax 20 M on Chromosorb W HP 80-100 mesh. These results were also confirmed by other two reference columns. This method was applied successfully to the analysis of the air of the work environment under examination.

The histamine releasing properties of some agents used in textile industry.

The inflammatory effect of some compounds (polyglycolamines and polyglycolalcohols condensated with various number of ethylene oxide groups) used in textile industry were investigated as to their action on skin vascular permeability in rats and histamine release from rat peritoneal mast cells. The intradermal injection of tested agents caused the inflammatory skin reactions of various intensity depending on time, dose and chemical structure of agent used. It has been also shown that these properties of tested compounds were correlated with their histamine releasing activity and seemed to be dependent on their chemical structure, namely, the number of ethylene oxide groups in molecule. It is suggested that the histamine release induced by tested compounds is of cytotoxic nature since it depends neither on metabolic energy nor on extracellular calcium.

Identification and differentiation of resinous cannabis and textile cannabis: combined use of HPLC and high-resolution GLC.

The combined use of high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) and high-resolution gas-liquid chromatography (GLC) afforded a means of isolating three substances in samples of cannabis, of determining their retention times in HPLC and in GLC with and without derivation, and of identifying them, by comparison with the data in the literature, with the three major constituents of cannabis: cannabidiol (CBD), delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta-9-THC) and cannabinol (CBN), without using either control substances or a mass spectrometer. Furthermore, calculation of the peak area ratios (formula: see text); for the different sample varieties can serve as a criterion for the differentiation of resinous cannabis and textile cannabis.

The incidence of pleural mesothelioma in chrysotile asbestos textile workers.

Analysis of the incidence of pleural mesothelioma in asbestos textile workers in relation to age, time since first exposure, intensity of exposure and period of observation indicates that age per se is largely irrelevant; that is, the incidence 30 years after first exposure appears to be much the same irrespective of age at first exposure. This has been shown to be true in animal experiments and has been suggested on theoretical grounds for certain human cancers; it explains the evolution of lung cancer rates in relation to changing smoking habits but has not been demonstrated directly by human data. These results also suggest that mesothelioma incidence may not have been much underestimated in the past, which would imply that the recent marked increase in recorded rates is largely real and not merely a diagnostic artefact. The risk does not appear to have been much higher among men who were initially very heavily exposed. One possible explanation of this surprising observation is that chrysotile is eliminated, or ceases to be biologically active, more quickly than other types of asbestos.
