[Chemical study on bioactive natural products of novel structural types].

Bioactive natural products of novel structural types play a highly significant role in the drug discovery and development process. Of the 1,031 new chemical entities covering all diseases in the years 1981-2002, 48% were natural product mimics, 5% were the direct utility of natural products as sources of novel structures. Up to now, the main challenges are more efficient and rapid processes for discovery and isolation of bioactive natural products of novel structural types. Therefore, new strategies and ideas for chemical study on bioactive natural products of novel structural types should be applied. In order to discover a large number of bioactive natural products of novel structural types from naturally occurring sources and elucidate the intrinsic value of natural products as leads to new structures with different activities, new, more efficient and rapid processes for study on natural products will be established by use of modern chromatographies, techniques on line identification of natural products and screening methods based on molecular targets.

[Studies on identification of Gryllotalpa by near-infrared diffuse reflectance spectrometry].

OBJECTIVE: To identify and analyse the different species, same species in different regions and confusion species. METHOD: Near-infrared diffuse reflectance spectrometry was used. RESULT: Clustering analysis showed that clustering relations were far among different Gryllotalpa species and close among the same species from different regions, and there were close relations among the same species from near regions and between Teleogryllus emmus and G. orientalis. CONCLUSION: Near-infrared diffuse reflectance spectrometry method can be used in classification and identification of Gryllotalpa.

[Morphological and histological study on Pteris multifida].

The thesis studies on the pharmacognostical characteristics of Pteris multifida were carried out in this paper. The blade has special vein-like cell. The stomas in dorsal epidermis are regular. The petiol has V-shaped amphicribral bundles. The rhizome has 6-8 meristeles. The triangle-form spore has tumor-shaped or pellet-shaped decorations on its surface.

[Determination of hypoxanthine and xanthine in hippocampus by HPLC method].

OBJECTIVE: A method was established for the determination of hypoxanthine and xanthine in Hippocampus by HPLC. METHODS: The HPLC system consisted of a Kromasil C18 column (250 mm x 4.6 mm, 5 microm) with methanol-water (2:98, V/V) as the mobile phase. The wavelength of detection was 254 nm. RESULTS: The linear range of hypoxanthine and xanthine were 29.0-464.0 ng (r = 0.99996) and 24.5-392.0 ng (r = 0.9995) respectively. The average recovery of hypoxanthine was 100.73%, RSD = 1.31% (n = 6). The average recovery of xanthine was 100.54%, RSD = 1.14% (n = 6). CONCLUSION: This method is convenient and the result is accurate. It can be used for quality control of Hippocampus.

[The system of appellation of origin and geographic indication of orthodox drugs and their protection in China].

There are lot of orthodox drugs in Chinese traditional medicine, with good reputation, quality and characteristics, are well known for their place of origin. Appellation of origin and geographic indication (GI) should be protected. Implementing system of the protection of GI in Chinese traditional medicine field is very important to extend national elaborate orthodox drugs and raise competitiveness of the goods in international trade.

[Microscopic identification of homonym drugs of "Baitouweng" by digital imaging technique].

AIM: To identify the commercial drugs collected from 11 different areas with name of "Baitouweng", in order to understand the homonym status of Baitouweng in markets. METHODS: Based on macroscopic identification, we further studied the microscopic structures of the collected samples by digital imaging technique. RESULTS: Nine species belong to 4 different families have been found out from the commercial drugs of "Baitouweng". There are the roots of Pulsatilla chinensis (Bunge) Regel (recorded in Chinese Pharmacopoeia with name "Baitouweng"), P. cernua (Thunb.) Bercht et Opiz, P. turczaninovii Kryl. et Serg., P. dahurica (Fisch.) Spreng., Anemone tomentosa (Maxim.) Pei, Rhaponticum uniflorum (L.) DC. and the herbs of Potentilla chinensis Ser., Po. discolor Beg. and Polycarpaea corymbosa Lam.. CONCLUSION: The original plants of the crude drug "Baitouweng" were still promiscuous in the market because there are different medicinal usages in different areas resulting in the phenomenon of homonym for Baitouweng. Otherwise, the digital photographs offered by the paper visually reflected the main microscopic characteristics of the commercial "Baitouweng", can be used for the identification of the above drugs.

[Histological and morphological studies on leaves of Curcuma in China].

OBJECTIVE: To provide some new evidences for the classification and identification of medicinal materials of Curcuma. METHOD: The optical microscope and electronic microsccopic scaning were used to characterize the leaves of Curcuma. RESULT AND CONCLUSION: There were no obvious histological and morphological differences among the leaves of Curcuma. But the differences in the hair distribution, stoma density and size , shape and size of epidermic cells could be considered to be the main features for the microscopic identification of leaves of Curcuma.

[Resource investigation and quality evaluation on wild Corydalis yanhusuo].

OBJECTIVE: To study the resource and the quality of wild Corydalis yanhusuo distributed in China. METHOD: Distribution was observed and samples of wild C. yanhusuo were collected and qualities were evaluated by determining six main alkaloids contained in the samples. RESULT: The main distribution of wild Corydalis yanhusuo was in the hills around middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River. Its distributive areas were continuously decreasing. The alkaloids contents in the samples varied among different populations. CONCLUSION: The alkaloids contents in wild populations of C. yanhusuo are diverse. The main kinds of alkaloids in some wild populations are higher than cultivated ones, which are valuable for breeding. The wild C. yanhusuo propagate well, however they are endangered due to environment problem, and should be protected.
