[The use of helium-neon laser radiation in the combined treatment and prevention of dental caries in children].

The possibility of improving the efficacies of the known anticarious agents with He-Ne laser exposure was investigated in 455 caries-susceptible children. The results evidence that a combination of treatment and prophylactic measures with He-Ne laser exposure was conducive to a reduction of the carious process intensity, essentially improved the efficacy of the known anticarious agents, promoted elimination of focal demineralization and improved oral hygiene.

[The effect of a low-intensity helium-neon laser on succinate dehydrogenase activity in unmineralized periodontal and dental tissues].

Laser effects with energy density of 28.8, 86.4, 144 J/cm2 and 86.4 J/cm2 in combination with fluorine agents on succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) activity were studied in 264 noninbred white rats (5 groups). The animals were decapitated in 1, 6, 12, 24, 48, 72 h and 12 and 30 days. The findings evidence elevated SDH activity virtually in all periods tested. Laser exposure enhanced enzymic activity in all the animals.

[Effect of helium-neon-laser radiation on microbes].

In a well-defined in-vitro experiment the effects of a He-Ne-laser of 6 mW output on some dominating microbes in the oral cavity were studied by using a scanning electron microscope. No changes on the surface in the irradiated colonies could be seen even after an exposition lasting for 60 minutes (continuous or pulsated wave). Therefore an antibacterial effect of softlaser-irradiation sometimes described in literature in questionable.

[The efficacy of using a helium-neon laser, ascorbic acid and methylene blue in the combined treatment of patients with maxillofacial phlegmons].

The efficacy of multiple-modality treatment including interstitial He-Ne laser exposure and agents normalizing redox processes due to their antioxidant effect, 5 percent ascorbic acid and 1 percent methylene blue aqueous solution, was assessed in the treatment of 188 patients with maxillofacial phlegmons. The treatment accelerated injured tissue regeneration, this permitting early secondary suturing and shortening the invalidity periods.

[The effect of the light from a helium-neon laser on normal dental enamel solubility and in caries].

Effects of He-Ne laser radiation at a wavelength 0.63 micron for 90 sec on dental enamel mineral metabolism were studied from Ca, P levels and Ca/P ratio in 67 children aged 3 to 7. Ca and P solubility in surface enamel layers was found reduced after He-Ne laser irradiation in both healthy children and those with caries. Laser was found to normalize the oral fluid mineral composition.

[In vivo measurement of the distribution of the refractive index of the human lens using a Scheimpflug photo of the anterior eye segment and a helium-neon laser beam].

The distribution of the refractive index of the human lens in vivo is measured by taking a Scheimpflug photograph of the anterior segment while simultaneously passing a HeNe laser beam through these structures. The refractive index can be evaluated simply by using the Snellens formula for refraction on the course of the beam after reevaluating the Scheimpflug photograph for distortion. It is possible to perform this measurement during accommodation and in the relaxed lens.

[The effect of low-intensity radiation from a helium-neon laser on the alkaline phosphatase activity in an uncomplicated mandibular fracture and in traumatic osteomyelitis].

The osteal alkaline phosphatase (AP) activity was examined in 167 Wistar rats with uncomplicated regeneration and traumatic osteomyelitis of the mandible, exposed to low-intensity He-Ne laser. Laser exposure stimulated the bone AP activity in the animals with traumatic osteomyelitis and uncomplicated regeneration, confirming the efficacy of therapy with He-Ne laser.
