Effect of dental adhesives on the exudative phase of the inflammatory process in subcutaneous tissue of rats.

The vascular changes in the subcutaneous connective tissue of rats induced by dentin bonding systems (one step) was studied and compared to those induced by saline solution (negative control) and Furacin (positive control), during the exudative phase of the inflammatory process. Twenty mg/kg of Evan's blue were injected intravenously in the vein of the rats' penises; 0.1 ml of each substance tested was inoculated in the subcutaneous tissue. After a 3 hour period the animals were sacrificed and their skins were excised and punched out with a standard steel 2.5 cm in diameter. The specimens were immediately immersed in 8 ml of formamide and taken to a double boiler for 72 hours at 37 C, to remove the dye. The liquid containing the overflowed dye was filtered, analyzed in the spectrophotometer (620 nm) and classified according to the criteria established by Nagem-Filho, Pereira (1976). After statistical analysis, the irritative potential of the substances was ranked as follows: Furacin (severe) > Single Bond and Bond 1 (moderate - no significant differences between the dentin bonding systems tested) > saline solution (not significant as regards the irritation degree).

The prevention of wound infections in burn patients.

To investigate the necessity of "protective isolation" and/or gastrointestinal tract decontamination in the prevention of infections in burn patients treated under ward conditions, a bacteriological inventory of burn sites, oropharynx and faeces was made 3 times a week. The origin of bacteria isolated from the lesions was determined by typing. In addition, the effect of local protection by topical application of silver-sulphadiazine or nitrofuralum was investigated. Of potentially pathogenic bacteria known to cause infections in burn, St. aureus was found to be almost exclusively exogenous in origin. Str. pyogenes, on the other hand, appeared either to be strongly inhibited by topical treatment or else to have colonized the wounds only from endogenous sources. Endogenous (gi-tract) Enterobacteriaceae biotype-positive samples were restricted to burn sites near the mouth and the anus. Enterobacteriaceae biotypes of exogenous origin appeared to colonize wounds of about one third of the patients. It is concluded that topical protection is insufficient in the prevention of bacterial colonization of the lesions. Therefore, protective isolation (St. aureus, etc.) and selective gastrointestinal decontamination are to be considered for infection prevention.

Electrochemical characteristics of nitroheterocyclic compounds of biological interest. VIII. Stability of nitro radical anions from cyclic voltammetric studies.

The stability of the one electron addition product of four biologically important nitroheterocyclic compounds has been examined electrochemically. Using cyclic voltammetry the tendency of the nitro radical anion to undergo disproportionation was studied by two methods of analysis. The first was based on determining the voltammetric time-constant required for half of the reduction product, RNO2-., to react further. The second concerned the minimum volume of dimethylformamide which had to be added to the aqueous electrolytic medium to give a specific cyclic voltammetric response. Both methods were found to compare well with the results obtained for RNO2-. stabilities using a theoretically derived procedure for a second order reaction following a charge-transfer step. The use of these alternative approaches for quantifying the reactivity of reduction products is discussed. The time-constant method in particular may be useful in studying complex reaction pathways.

[Elimination of residual cavities in multiple echinococcosis of liver].

The results of operative treatment of 65 patients with multiple echinococcosis of the liver are analysed. For the purpose of treatment of the cyst's residual cavity in 19 cases the authors used furacillin solution warmed up to 70 degrees C. As a result of the study it was established, that at a distance of 2 cm around the fibrous capsule rather high temperature is mounted, which is fatal for oncosphera. This method advantageously differs from others (4% formalin solution, iodine tincture). In 29 cases the residual cavity was treated with 4% formalin solution, in 11 cases 4% formalin solution was combined with iodine tincture, in the rest 6 cases--4% formalin solution was used and 1% chlorhexidinum solution followed by 70% alcohol. For elimination of residual cavities, which appeared after echinococcectomy, combinations of various methods were used, among which the proposed by the authors method of "hood", which is formed from the omentum with vascular pedicle. Complications (purulent fistulas formation) occurred in 5 patients. The authors come to a conclusion that for elimination of residual cavities after echinococcectomy in multiple echinococcosis of the liver the combination of various methods is obligatory.
