Fast and slow myosins as specific markers of muscle: an immunocytochemical study.

Slow and fast myosins are specific markers of skeletal muscle. The specificity of anti-fast and anti-slow myosin antisera been verified on frozen and paraffin embedded tissues. The optimal fixative useful for routine histopathological purposes has been investigated. It is suggested that these two antisera can be used in the diagnosis of rhabdomyoblastic tumours substituting for or complementary to myoglobin, a well known marker of striated muscle.

Expression of the common acute lymphoblastic leukemia antigen (CD10) in mesenchymal tumors.

The expression of the CD10 antigen, formerly designated as common acute lymphoblastic leukemia antigen and recently identified as neutral endopeptidase, was examined immunohistochemically in 26 benign and in 55 malignant mesenchymal tumors. CD10 expression was found in 4 of 4 leiomyomas, 7 of 10 leiomyosarcomas, 1 of 6 rhabdomyosarcomas, 2 of 2 Triton tumors, 1 of 2 aggressive fibromatoses, 1 of 3 fibrosarcomas, 1 of 4 synovial sarcomas, 1 of 1 giant cell tumors of tendon sheath, 4 of 4 malignant fibrous histiocytomas, 3 of 3 Ewing's sarcomas, and 2 of 3 osteosarcomas. Furthermore, CD10 was expressed consistently in the myoepithelial compartment of 12 fibroadenomas and, in 7 of these cases, in a minor stromal cell population, probably of (myo-) fibroblastic origin. Tumors of adipose tissue (4 lipomas, 5 liposarcomas), tumors of autonomic ganglia (2 ganglioneuromas, 1 ganglioneuroblastoma, 2 neuroblastomas), tumors of peripheral nerves with purely schwannian differentiation (7 malignant schwannomas), and tumors of disputed origin were consistently CD10-negative, however, as were single cases of fibroma and chondrosarcoma. These findings indicate that the expression of CD10 is a frequent but not obligatory feature in some mesenchymal tumors. Therefore CD10 is of value in the differential diagnosis of mesenchymal tumors.

[Primary reconstructive operations in cancer of the mouth mucosa and oropharynx].

An analysis of primary reconstructive surgical treatment of 254 patients with carcinoma of the mouth mucosa and oral pharynx was made. The character of operative procedures for different localizations of the tumour is described. The primary reconstructive surgical treatment was shown to reduce the amount of postoperative complications to 11.4%, to keep intact the natural ways of respiration and nutrition at the early postoperative period. If without recidivation, about 70% of the patients continued working.

Neurogenic tumors of the skin.

A classification of peripheral nerve sheath tumors in the skin is based on analysis of light-, electron microscopy, immunohistochemistry and cellular composition of the different tumor types. Not only Schwann cells, but also perineurial cells and fibroblasts may be involved in tumor formation. Schwann cell rich and connective tissue cell rich tumors are distinguished. Generally all tumors show low proliferating activity as investigated by H3-Thymidine autoradiography. Only in few connective tissue cell rich tumors higher labelling indices can be demonstrated. These findings are correlated with the clinical course and prognosis of the different tumor types. The question remains, whether connective tissue cell rich tumors are at higher risk for malignant transformation.

Immunohistochemical analysis of soft tissue sarcomas. Comparisons with electron microscopy.

Soft tissue sarcomas are capable of causing diagnostic bewilderment for the surgical pathologist, because of their diversity of differentiation and overlapping histologic appearances. Immunohistochemical studies provide a means whereby this confusion can be resolved in many cases, and electron microscopy also may play a useful role in this process. This overview presents a summary of results of these 2 adjuvant modalities of pathologic analysis, as applied to the spectrum of malignant soft tissue neoplasms.

[Importance of immunohistochemistry of skin tumors].

Immunohistological demonstration of cell- and tissue-specific antigens in microscopic slides has remarkably influenced the classification of certain cutaneous neoplasms. The following markers are of particular interest in dermatopathology: cell surface antigens of lymphocyte subpopulations, intracytoplasmic immunoglobulins, intermediate filaments, neural markers, epithelial cell membrane antigens, and endothelial products. During the last years, these methods have contributed to our understanding of histogenesis and classification especially of cutaneous lymphomas, epithelial neoplasms, neurogenic tumors, and angiosarcomas.

[Immunohistochemical localization of S-100 protein in granular cell myoblastoma].

Three cases of granular cell myoblastoma have been studied in order to determine the presence and distribution of the S-100 specific protein in the neoplastic cells, using immunocytochemical staining techniques, through the modified avidin-biotin method. Positive immunostaining was observed in the three cases studied. The comparative study of various control cases histogenetically originating from neuroectoderm (melanoma) and specifically from Schwann cells, as also the presence of strongly positive staining in Schwann cells of peripheral nerve fibres situated inside and outside the tumor, support the concept of the neurogenic origin of this interesting tumor.

Nonsquamous tumors of the oral cavity.

The clinical presentations of various nonsquamous tumors of the oral cavity are reviewed, along with their gross pathology, histology, and treatment. Survival rates are presented for those neoplasms that occur frequently enough to allow meaningful analysis of various modes of therapy.

[Mixed tumors of the kidney and lung].

A renal tumor composed of fibrous and smooth-muscular tissues and containing focally disposed foam cells and tubular structures composed of cuboidal epithelium was found in a 2-year-old girl along with a similarly structured pulmonary tumor. The tumors were thought to be of a hamartoma nature and to have probably arisen from the mesonephros.
