Using concept relations to improve ranking in information retrieval.

Despite improved search engine technology, most searches return numerous documents not directly related to the query. This problem is mitigated if relevant documents appear high on a ranked list of search results. We propose that some queries and the underlying information needs can be modeled as relationships between concepts (relations), and we match relations in queries to relations in documents to try to improve ranking of search results. We investigate four techniques to identify two relationships important in medicine, causes and treats, to improve the ranking of medical text documents relevant to clinical questions about causation and treatment. Preliminary results suggest that identifying relation instances can improve the ranking of search results.

Computer--aided drug interaction retrieval programme.

A drug interaction database has been created to include information on drug interactions based both on the generic and trade names of drugs. The database has approximately one thousand records that provide the information on drug-drug, food, smoke, alcohol interactions and a message to briefly describe the particulars of drug interactions. The computer programme was designed using Dbase III plus commands, to readily identify potentially significant interactions in a prescription. The computer outputs may be used to alert the physicians in time to take precautions and hence to reduce the incidences of adverse effects associated with drug interactions. This would result in reduction in hospital stay as well as reducing costs of medical care. This is urgently needed in public as well as private hospitals.

Ambiguity resolution while mapping free text to the UMLS Metathesaurus.

We propose a method for resolving ambiguities encountered when mapping free text to the UMLS Metathesaurus. Much of the research in medical informatics involves the manipulation of free text. The Metathesaurus contains extensive information which supports solutions to problems encountered while processing such text. After discussing the process of mapping free text to the Metathesaurus and describing the ambiguities which are often the result of such mapping, we provide examples of rules designed to eliminate mapping ambiguities. These rules refer to the context in which the ambiguity occurs and crucially depend on semantic types obtained from the Metathesaurus. We have conducted a preliminary test of the methodology and the results obtained indicate that the rules successfully resolve ambiguity around 80% of the time.

Classifying and identifying servers for biomedical information retrieval.

Useful retrieval of biomedical information from network information sources requires methods for organized access to those information sources. This access must be organized in terms of the information content of information sources and in terms of the discovery of the network location of those information sources. We have developed an approach to providing organized access to information sources based on a scheme of hierarchical classifiers and identifiers of the servers providing access to those information sources. This approach uses MeSH tree numbers as both classifiers and identifiers of servers. MeSH tree numbers are used to indicate the information content of servers, and also as OSF/DCE server identifiers. This allows the identity and location of a server providing access to a given information source to be determined from the information classification of that information source.

Harnessing health information in the Third World.

The provision of technical information on health in developing countries is discussed, with particular reference to the Diarrhoeal Diseases Information Services Centre in Bangladesh. Progress towards meeting the pressing needs of the Third World in this field can undoubtedly be made by increasing the use of micrographic, computer and videodisc technologies and by reorganizing and promoting the facilities on offer.

Citation analysis of faculty publication: beyond Science Citation Index and Social Science Citation Index.

When evaluated for promotion or tenure, faculty members are increasingly judged more on the quality than on the quantity of their scholarly publications. As a result, they want help from librarians in locating all citations to their published works for documentation in their curriculum vitae. Citation analysis using Science Citation Index and Social Science Citation Index provides a logical starting point in measuring quality, but the limitations of these sources leave a void in coverage of citations to an author's work. This article discusses alternative and additional methods of locating citations to published works.
