Infestation with intestinal parasites can now be controlled by several broad-spectrum compounds. These drugs are particularly useful against multiple intestinal parasites, as frequently found in tropical and subtropical countries, and are well suited to mass treatment. The introduction of oxamniquine and praziquantel constitutes a break through in the treatment of intestinal and urogenital schistosomiasis. Praziquantel also perfectly controls taeniasis, sometimes including its larval form (cysticercosis). Experience is too short to evaluate the effectiveness of benzimidazoles (notably albendazole), administered post-operatively or alone when surgery is contra-indicated, in the treatment of hepatic or alveolar hydatid disease. Better drugs are needed to treat Fasciola hepatica infestation or to control onchocerciasis and other diseases due to filariae.
It has been shown that chronic African endomyocardial fibrosis (E.m.f.) is most likely the burnt-out phase of parasite-induced hypereosinophilia. It has also been shown that African E.m.f. and Loffler's heart disease are pathologically identical. The mechanism by which these parasites and/or eosinophilia are associated with endomyocardial damage remains, however, unknown. The parasites which have been associated with induction of eosinophilia in E.m.f. include filariasis; trichinosis; ascariasis and hookworm and schistosomiasis. These parasites are known to produce neurologic, cardiac, pneumonic, hepatic and dermal damage during the migration of their larvae; at which time eosinophilia is usually most severe. The tissue damage induced by larval migration of these parasites appears comparable to findings seen in the hypereosinophilic syndrome. The evidence from our observations and this review suggests that the cardiac damage induced by larval migration, like the neurologic, pneumonic and dermal damage, is allergic in nature. Endomyocardial fibrosis has previously been shown to be an allergic heart disease. It appears reasonable to regard African endomyocardial fibrosis as representing the most intense, non-specific cardiac allergic reaction to helminthic larvae.

The authors reviewed the data acquired in ELISA technique for serological diagnosis of parasitosis. They reviewed the literature on Schistosomisis, Fasciolasis, Cestode infections (hydatidoses and cysticercoses) and nematode infections. They described their adaptation of the technique for detection of antimicrofilaria Loa loa antibodies and concluded that ELISA technique is reliable in the diagnosis of parasitic diseases even in areas where they are endemic.

Four different species of helminths: Anisakis spp. Diplozoon paradoxum, Aspidogaster limacoides and Asymphylodera kubanicum were found in 1.4%, 28%, 15% and 5% of 140 Rutilus frisii katum from the south Caspian Sea respectively. Generally, the number of worms collected was low and cannot be considered pathogenic to examined fish.
Working on a health education programme in the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Principe, the authors carried out a research about the popular believes concerning the helminthiases, the attitude associated with the parasites' presence, their origin and the treatment based on empirical healing tradition. The research pointed out the similarity between some believes belonging to the local population and those collected by some authors in Italian rural areas and with the opinion of many physicians living in the past centuries. It also pointed out the importance of evaluating the cultural factors in health education campaigns against intestinal helminthiases.
