A formulation of mebendazole was used to determine the optimal dosage level against induced and/or naturally occurring infections of Toxocara cati, Ancylostoma tubaeforme, and Taenia taeniaeformis in cats. Amounts of 11 mg/kg of body weight/day or 22 mg/kg/day were given for 2, 3, or 4 days. Feces were collected for 7 days and were examined for expelled parasites. Cats were necropsied to recover retained parasites. A regimen of 22 mg/kg/day for 3 days was determined to be optimal with efficacies of 100%, 99%, and 50% against T cati, A tubaeforme, and Taenia taeniaeformis, respectively.

A parasitological survey was conducted on the inhabitants of six villages of Kao District, Halmahera Island, North Maluku, Indonesia, in July 1993. A total of 422 fecal samples were examined by using Kato-Katz thick smear, modified Harada-Mori culture and formalin ether concentration techniques. Seven nematode species, ie Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, Necator americanus, Ancylostoma duodenale, Strongyloides stercoralis, Enterobius vermicularis and unidentified rhabditoids of free-living nature, were detected. Trematode and cestode infection was not proven. Necator americanus was the predominant species of hookworm. Soil-transmitted nematode infections were highly prevalent. Among the young inhabitants aged less than 15, positive rates of Ascaris, Trichuris and hookworm infections were 32.7, 52.7 and 68.6%, respectively. Among the people aged 15 or more, the positive rate for hookworm (85.9%) was much higher than that for Ascaris and Trichuris (13.5 and 40.5%, respectively). Egg count revealed that more than 90% of inhabitants with Trichuris or hookworm had light infections. The latrines in the surveyed area seemed to have only limited effects on the improvement of the parasitological status because the prevalence of Trichuris infections was much higher in a village where most houses were provided with latrines. These conflicting conditions were considered to have been caused by many factors including the inadequate structure of the latrines.

Mice infected with the parasite Mesocestoides corti develop hypergammaglobulinemia, hepatomegaly, and splenomegaly. The immune response to M. corti infection is directed, in part, at molecules secreted by the organism. Two of these molecules have been shown to be hsp70 and hsp60 homologues. In this study it was found that incubation of splenocytes from infected animals with M. corti-secreted molecules or the isolated M. corti hsp70 results in the expansion of an unusual cell type with the morphology of large granular lymphocytes. The cell lines express Thy-1, CD4 (low), and CD45RB but lack TCR alpha beta, TCR gamma delta, CD3, CD8, and slg. The lack of a TCR suggested NK cells, but no cytolytic activity could be detected. In addition, the cell lines constitutively produce IL-6 and can be induced to express IL-2, but not IL-4, IL-5, or IFN-gamma. Given the phenotype of these cells, it is possible that they represent T lineage precursors or some type of effector cells. Notably, CD3- CD4+ cells appear to be expanded in the spleens and livers of M. corti-infected animals, suggesting an important role in infection. Moreover, the selective growth of this cell type with M. corti hsp70 suggests that the outgrowth and in vivo expansion of these cells may be related to the stress response of the parasite.
A study to compare effects of mass, targeted, and selective chemotherapy with levamisole as an intervention for the control of Ascaris lumbricoides was carried out in 3 communities in rural Oyo State, Nigeria. Selective treatment was applied in 1 village by treating the most heavily infected 20% of the inhabitants, targeted treatment in the second village involved children aged 2-15 yr, whereas mass treatment was offered to all inhabitants in the third village, excluding infants under 1 yr and pregnant women. Intensity (eggs per gram,) of A. lumbricoides infection was determined immediately before and 3 mo after the period of intervention as a means of assessing the relative efficacy of the treatment regimes. During the field study, information on resource use was also collected for a retrospective cost analysis of the 3 strategies Resources used included manpower, materials, drugs, and transport. The results of the parasitological evaluation on the effect of treatment on egg intensity were then combined with the cost analysis to provide an overall measure of the cost-effectiveness of mass, targeted, and selective interventions. The results were expressed in terms of the cost per 1,000 egg reduction in intensity and the cost per person treated. The results showed the mass and targeted approach to be considerably more cost effective than the selective approach.

The distribution of Chabertia (Ch.) ovina, Oesophagostomum (O.) venulosum and Trichuris spp. within the large intestine of naturally infected sheep in the dependence of worm counts and the presence of nematodes of other species or genera was evaluated. The large intestine was divided into 4 sections. More than 75% of Ch. ovina were found within the disk-like section of the colon independently from worm count and presence of nematodes of other species. O. venulosum and Trichuris spp. preferred the caecum and the first section of the colon up to the beginning of the disk-like section. In both, the share of worms recovered from the first section of the colon did increase with higher worm counts. The simultaneous presence of O. venulosum and Trichuris spp. had a significantly negative influence on the share of Trichuris spp. isolated from the caecum.
