The clinical outcomes in 112 dogs weighing less than 35 pounds that were presented with cervical intervertebral disk protrusions were retrospectively evaluated. Although the second to third cervical (C2 to C3) intervertebral space was the most common site (27%) of disk protrusion, 57% of disk protrusions presented were caudal to the fourth cervical (C4) vertebra. Dogs with cranial intervertebral disk protrusions, including the C2 to C3 and C3 to C4 intervertebral disk spaces, responded favorably to ventral slot decompression. By comparison, caudal intervertebral disk protrusions (within the C4 to the seventh cervical [C7] intervertebral disk spaces) responded less favorably to ventral slot decompression, demonstrating significantly more severe clinical effects in motor function, comfort, recovery, and long-term outcome following surgery. Significant improvement in clinical results was seen in caudal disk protrusions when additional surgical distraction and stabilization were provided following ventral slot decompression.
Sera of 489 children from Northern Greece aged between 6 months and 15 years of age and aflicted with different clinical entities, were tested for anti Leishmania infantum specific IgG and IgM antibodies, using an ELISA (enzyme linked immunosorbent assay) technique. In this survey, a remarkably high percentage (8.5%) of hospitalized children reacted positively to this method. Twenty three out of 489 children (4.7%) had IgG antibodies, seventeen (3.5%) IgM, while two (0.4%) had both IgG and IgM antibodies against soluble antigen of L. infantum promastigotes. Females had a higher seropositivity than males. The highest prevalence was observed in males aged between 6 months and 5 years old (10 out of 19), while the lowest was observed also in males aged between 11 and 15 years old (5 out of 11). Seropositivity rate was higher in children below 5 years of age. Some epidemiologic, as well as clinical data of canine Leishmaniosis from Northern Greece are discussed.
The case presents a healthy woman in her fifties, who was admitted to hospital with clinical signs of diffuse or disseminated intravascular coagulation and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura even though she was respiratorily and circulatorily stable. She developed gastroenteritis four days after a dog bite. After a while she got painful and ischemic legs, and this was the cause of admission. The laboratory manifestations included severe thrombocytopenia, fibrin degradation products but no presence of schistocytes or fragmented red blood cells. A gramnegative rod was seen in the blood but no specific culture was grown. The patient recovered on antibiotic regime within few weeks.

In both toxicity studies and epidemiologic studies in veterinary medicine it has been demonstrated that ovarian steroids as well as many synthetic derivatives may enhance mammary tumour formation in the dog. Abnormalities in pituitary function, in particular of growth hormone secretion, have been assumed to take part in this process. In this paper the pathogenetic role that endogenous and exogenous hormones may have in canine mammary tumourigenesis is reviewed. The available evidence suggests that steroid hormones act at an early stage in the development of tumours by stimulating the proliferation of normal epithelium. This leads to an increase in the number of susceptible cells. A growth-stimulatory action may further be exerted upon cells that have undergone partial malignant transformation, but possibly to a lesser extent upon fully malignant cells at a late stage of tumour development. In advanced mammary cancers steroid receptor presence is infrequent, which may indicate a more autonomous pattern of growth. No support has been found for the earlier assumption that growth hormone overproduction is an important factor in canine mammary tumourgenesis. The role of prolactin and thyroid hormones in this process remains uncertain.
