[The use of computer system in the introduction of countermeasures in agriculture after the Chernobyl accident].

In the development of strategies for countermeasures aimed at the rehabilitation of contaminated areas, essential is to identify criteria for assessing their effectiveness and factors influencing the priority of the criteria chosen. A method is suggested for assessing effectiveness of countermeasures in agriculture based on a multicriterium analysis of radiologic, economic, regulatory and socio-psychological indicators characterizing the use of countermeasures. Rating of countermeasures strategies is presented depending on financing of works on the rehabilitation of the Chernobyl affected areas.

A formal language for computational systems biology.

The post-genomic era has opened new insights into the complex biochemical reaction systems present in the cell and has generated huge amount of information. The biological systems are highly complex and can overwhelm the numerically computable models. Therefore, models employing symbolical techniques might provide a faster insight. This paper presents some preliminary results and recent trends in the above direction. Specifically, it presents an overview of the main features of some formalisms and techniques from the field of specification languages for concurrency and mobility, which have been proposed to model and simulate the dynamics of the interaction of complex biological systems. The ultimate goal of these symbolic approaches is the modeling, analysis, simulation, and hopefully prediction of the behavior of biological systems (vs. biological components).

A computer system for contact dermatitis: graphical representation of data.

An overview is given of the computer applications we have developed over the last twelve years in the field of contact dermatitis. The dissemination of exposure lists to sensitised individuals and the development of a knowledge-based system are mentioned only briefly. Priority here is given to the explanation of the graphical representation of the patient data collected since 1978 on 12,000 patients referred to three contact dermatitis units. More than a hundred parameters of each patient have been collected in a database. Several graphs are given of these data and are discussed in detail.

Application of an essential data set based computer system in support of maternal and child care.

A simple functional application software has been developed to support care providers in information management related to perinatal care activities, family planning encounters and the immunization of infants. This was distributed to some sites and was implemented with no organizational change, though the methods differed. An early assessment of the software after a period of implementation is made based on the observations and experiences reported. This is presented in a framework outlined earlier as the OUST model. The systems objective to enhance the value of information was observed to have been partially achieved. The utility to the users is observed in the ability of the end-users at the sites to identify the local community needs and adopt accordingly suitable strategies. The social impact was seen in the assistance provided by the sentinel action of the system in tracking dropouts from the immunization programme at a site, thereby ensuring quality in care and also economic benefits. From a technical standpoint, the application software was small yet functional and in it were incorporated features that ensured data quality. The application software was designed to generate a unique identity code to assist in follow-up of the target population. Based on the data entered it compiled reports to meet administrative requirements, reports that gave the care providers feedback and lists to coordinate in the follow-up of the target population. The application software is a common data collection tool that can assist in building a data registry for health outcomes research.

Medical applications in the TANDEM-16 multiple computer system environment.

This paper addresses the question of reliability and the TANDEM-16 approach to facilitate reliable computers. Specifically, the use of the TANDEM-16 within the medical environment is described. Three current applications within the Medical Computing Resources Center at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Dallas are developed, each characterized by different reliability considerations.

PEARL II: portable laboratory computer system for psychophysiological assessment using event related brain potentials.

The PEARL II portable laboratory computer integrates hardware and software to serve as an on-line, realtime, experimental control and data acquisition system. Although the system can be used in many areas of research, PEARL II development has emphasized investigation of physiological responses from human subjects performing complex experimental tasks. PEARL functions as a "turn-key" system which performs standard neurological tests that would be employed, for example in neurotoxicological assessment. The PEARL system also includes several psychophysiological tests used in human engineering research on performance workload assessment. PEARL can also serve as a tool in basic research on human psychophysiology. The special feature of the PEARL test battery is its suitability for the measurements of event-related brain potentials (ERPs) in these tasks, although other physiological indices such as heart rate may be monitored. In addition, the PEARL system includes a versatile library of laboratory control subroutines that can be used to develop new applications.

Analysis of the change in work patterns following installation of an inpatient pharmacy computer system.

An experiment was designed to determine if the installation of a pharmacy computer produced a significant change in the distribution of routine inpatient dispensing activities for pharmacy personnel. Data were obtained using time lapse motion picture photography and work sampling procedures. Cameras were placed in three different locations for 6 days over a 2-week period before and after installation of the computer. A sample of approximately 2000 observations was reduced to machine readable format and analyzed using nonparametric statistical procedures. Results indicated a shift in work patterns of pharmacy personnel. It was concluded that the installation of a pharmacy computer had a significant effect on the distribution of routine inpatient dispensing activities. Pharmacy management should consider this information in anticipating efficient use of personnel and proper placement of computer hardware.
