A hospital-based perinatal coaching program fosters communication between first-time parents and their infants. Support provided includes learning about babies' individual differences, normal responses, bonding principles, modeling techniques, early childhood development, as well as realistic expectations of new parents.
To achieve competitive advantage, customers and suppliers are increasingly forming logistics partnerships to improve supply chain performance and reduce costs. The partnerships are typically motivated by the need to solve a particular problem, but with attention and open communication, new program ideas can develop, sometimes even breakthrough concepts. During the course of their partnership, Avery Dennison and United Stationers created a program that dramatically simplifies and speeds receiving and put-away of shipments with the aim of reducing workloads, improving service, and increasing profitability. The program involves optimizing order quantity increments to full-pallet, layer, and case volumes based on demand and warehouse configurations. Within six weeks, the results included a 50 percent reduction in shipment line items and 92 percent fewer put-away pieces, despite unchanged inventory levels.

In the medical community, bibliographic databases are widely accepted as a most important source of information both for theoretical and clinical disciplines. To improve access to medical bibliographic databases at Charles University, a database server (ERL by Silver Platter) was set up at the 2nd Faculty of Medicine in Prague. The server, accessible by Internet 24 hours/7 days, hosts now 14 years' MEDLINE and 10 years' EMBASE Paediatrics. Two different strategies are available for connecting to the server: a specialized client program that communicates over the Internet (suitable for professional searching) and a web-based access that requires no specialized software (except the WWW browser) on the client side. The server is now offered to academic community to host further databases, possibly subscribed by consortia whose individual members would not subscribe them by themselves.
A Thailand quality assessment program called "The External Quality Assessment in Clinical Chemistry, EQAC" was found in 1986. Ablind lyophilized control serum is monthly-cycle distributed to the participants and the returned test-report values are evaluated by a computed program. Evaluated report Variance Index Scores (VIS) and grades of test and mean score of all tests are posted back to the participants including a back of "The Newsletter of the EQAC". The development has been indicated by an increasing number of active participants and an improvement due to decreasing Variance Index Scores. In 1998 the program was applied by 324 laboratory participants of which 59% of general hospital and community health hospital laboratory, 29% of private hospital laboratory including polyclinics, and 12% of the others. By now as many as 144 trials of 23 biochemistry tests at different methods were assessed from the EQAC program. Participant communication, knowledge update and enhanced quality encouragement have been managed by mean of participants' VIS from 120 to 93 during 1987-1998.
Osteoporosis is a serious health problem that has reached epidemic proportions among Canadian women. This disease, and its concomitant fractures, places a heavy burden on society in terms of human suffering, loss of productivity, death, and health care costs. In keeping with these concerns, a Canadian community health agency has developed a series of workshops that are designed, in part, to educate women about this disease and to encourage them to take appropriate steps to prevent it or to make informed decisions about its treatment. The present study was designed to evaluate the outcome of one of these workshops. A semi-experimental design was used to measure any changes in the participants' knowledge about osteoporosis and their prevention and treatment practices regarding this disease. The results were compared to those of a control group that consisted of members of various branches of the Women's Institute who volunteered to participate in the study. The findings indicate that the workshop was effective in increasing the participants' level of knowledge on osteoporosis, an increase that was still evident 6 months following the session. The effect of the workshop on the actual preventive and treatment practices of women who attended, however, was limited to a slight increase in the use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and calcium intake.
