[Drunk driving in professional drivers in the Vía Blanca highway in Cuba].

To determine the frequency of drunk driving in professional drivers (Via Blanca, Havana City), we carried out a descriptive study of 832 drivers selected by multistage stratified sampling. A structured interview with each driver was carried out to record the variables under study, and a breath alcohol test was subsequently performed. The frequency of drunk driving was 8.18% (95% CI, 5.94%-10.42%), with a predominance of drivers with alcohol levels<or=0.24% (51.07%). Drunk driving was more frequent in "high risk" hours, in drivers aged between 40 and 49 years old (10.3%), and in those with 15 to 24 years of experience (11.02%). The frequency of drunk driving found in this study highlights the need to design traffic accident prevention strategies.

Activity of the essential oil from Chenopodium ambrosioides grown in Cuba against Leishmania amazonensis.

BACKGROUND AND METHODS: Current therapy against leishmaniasis is unsatisfactory. Efficacious and safe new drugs are needed. In this study, we show the leishmanicidal effect of an essential oil from Chenopodium ambrosioides against Leishmania amazonensis. RESULTS: The tested product had a potent inhibitory action against promastigote and amastigote forms, with 50% effective dose values of 3.7 and 4.6 microg/ml, respectively. The essential oil showed a moderate toxicity on macrophages from BALB/c mice. An optimal dose of 30 mg/kg/day was effective when administered during 15 days by intraperitoneal route to BALB/c mice infected experimentally. CONCLUSION: These studies revealed a potential source for the discovery of novel drugs to combat the leishmaniasis based on the traditional medicine.

Search for the chromosomal location of autosomal dominant cerebellar ataxia from Holguin, Cuba: exclusion from candidate regions on chromosome 4 and 11q.

A gene locus for autosomal dominant cerebellar ataxia (ADCA) has been found on chromosome 6p and named spinocerebellar ataxia 1. However, linkage exclusion from chromosome 6p and thus locus heterogeneity has been proven in Cuban ADCA, the largest known collective of ADCA patients, probably due to a founder effect. Two chromosomal regions were analyzed for linkage to Cuban ADCA: chromosome 4, since a pericentromeric inversion has been reported in a member of a European ADCA family, and chromosome 11q22-23, since it is known to contain the gene locus for ataxia telangiectasia, the main autosomal recessive disorder of cerebellar degeneration. In neither region was evidence for linkage found.

The role of the community health nurse in military humanitarian operations: lessons from operation sea signal--Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The military humanitarian mission is an "Operation-Other-Than-War" with a goal of restoring or promoting the ability of a population to care for themselves (U.S. Army, 1990b). One of the primary foci of these operations is the medical care of the target populace. The elements and techniques of primary health care have been used for this purpose, especially as the situation of a population stabilizes and demands a community base for health care programs (Downing, 1989). The knowledge and expertise of a community health nurse is indispensable in both acute and chronic humanitarian situations in performing a comprehensive community needs assessment for the formulation of a community base for health care programs while facilitating a health care system that meets the overall needs of the population. The contributions of community health nurses assigned to Joint Task Force 160, during Operation Sea Signal, bear testimony as to the efficacy of such a "specialized" role in the care of displaced populations.
